If your travel plans are taking you “way up north”, then you might be stopping in the Pacific Northwest first. Many Alaska cruises originate from Seattle, WA, allowing travelers the ease of leaving from a U.S. port. While you are probably eager to explore Alaska, you should not neglect the Emerald City itself. There is plenty to do and see especially during the summer months. You could easily spend days traversing this city, but let’s be honest, you have a cruise ship to board! So here, we highlight all the best things to do in Seattle with limited pre-cruise or post-cruise time.

Things You Must See in Seattle During Your Alaska Cruise

Space Needle

While some may label this a “tourist trap”, we enjoyed our time at the Space Needle and the surrounding area of Seattle Center. This 605-foot structure is one of the most recognizable landmarks in the world, and it now offers multi-level viewing experiences.

Top Things to Do in Seattle

Taking the 41-second elevator ride up to the Observation Deck, you have amazing 360-degree views of Seattle. With relatively clear weather, you will even be able to see Mount Rainer, Puget Sound, and the Olympic Mountains off in the distance. Further, there is a new lower level called the Loupe. The Loupe is the world’s first rotating glass floor experience offering unique downward views of Seattle, along with the Loupe Lounge for drinks and snacks.

For similar panoramic vistas, you can also visit the Sky View Observatory. Located on the 73rd floor of Columbia Center in Downtown Seattle, this is the tallest public viewing area in the Pacific Northwest. At 902 feet, the views from here won’t disappoint, either.

Chihuly Garden and Glass

Glass, flowers, and art — the Chihuly Garden and Glass exhibition has it all. And it’s consistently ranked as one of the best things to do in Seattle. You will be visually captivated by the craftsmanship and uniqueness of the art installations at Chihuly Garden and Glass.

Top Things to Do in Seattle

A Washington state native, Dale Chihuly’s glass works are displayed in eight galleries, the centerpiece Glasshouse, and a lush Garden. One of our favorite installations was the aptly named Sea Life — you probably would have guessed that! There are also many other impressive displays including elaborate chandeliers and the Persian ceiling.

It is not exactly a huge museum, but you can definitely spend about 90 minutes (or more) strolling through the museum exhibits, the glasshouse, and the adjacent garden admiring these massive pieces of glass art. Package tickets including the Space Needle can be purchased.

Pike Place Market

No time spent in Seattle would be complete without a morning at the world famous Pike Place Market. This historic waterfront attraction is home to some of the freshest seafood, locally made crafts, and unique eateries. It is one of the country’s oldest farmers’ markets with plenty of flowers, fruits and vegetables, and other homegrown goodies found throughout the multiple floors of its plaza.

Top Things to Do in Seattle

If you happen to visit the market after your cruise, you could pick out some fresh salmon or crab and have it iced down and boxed up for you. Many places will even ship it home for you (for an additional fee). Even if you do not plan on buying anything, you should still stroll the market to gain a new appreciation of these independent proprietors.

Starbucks

While at Pike Place, you should definitely visit the original Starbucks, which is conveniently located across from the market. Opened in 1971, today the shop serves as a Mecca for Starbucks fans, serving up coffee and other exclusive merchandise.

Top Things to Do in Seattle

If you are a true java fan, another one of the things you must see in Seattle is the Starbucks Reserve Roastery and Tasting Room over in the Capitol Hill neighborhood. This is the first of the local coffee company’s massive spaces designed to truly showcase coffee (think Willy Wonka’s chocolate factory). You can watch coffee beans being roasted, sample brews that you cannot find anywhere else, and even take a roastery tour.

Pier 57

A short walk from Pike Place Market, you will encounter Miner’s Landing at Pier 57. Perhaps the most noticeable landmark at this waterfront location is the Seattle Great Wheel. Who wouldn’t love to be 175 feet in the air snapping photos of this beautiful city? Unfortunately, it only makes a few revolutions, so do not expect too much for the price. By night, the wheel puts on LED light shows.

Top Things to Do in Seattle

Also located at Pier 57 is the Wings over Washington experience. This aerial adventure gives you a scenic bird’s eye view over the state (think Disney’s Soarin’). This state-of-the-art “flying theater” provides an immersive experience filled with sights, sounds, and scents as you soar over mountains, waterfalls, and more.

Miner’s Landing also features shopping and dining on the waterfront with plenty of fresh Pacific Northwest seafood on the menus.

The Seattle Aquarium

Adjacent to the Miner’s Landing area is the Seattle Aquarium. One of the largest aquariums in the United States, this landmark offers a variety of exhibits, including interactive areas where visitors can touch marine life from the Puget Sound ecosystem. There is also the Underwater Dome, with 360-degree views of the amazing sea life in the area and an educational center to learn about orcas.

While here, you will also discover birds, marine mammals, and tropical fish.

Things You Must See in Seattle

If you have the time and want to learn more about the abundant sea life in this coastal area, then the Seattle Aquarium should make your list of the best things to do in Seattle. The aquarium is open daily from 9:30 am to 6 pm (last entry is at 5 pm).

Harbor Cruise

Yes, you are going on a cruise (or just returned from one), but consider a sailing around the harbor to truly capture the beauty of this area. One of the most popular tours offered by Argosy Cruises, is a harbor cruise that provides city skylines and mountain vistas within 60 minutes. The company also offers a 2-hour cruise through the Ballard Locks (Hiram M. Chittenden Locks).

Bainbridge Island

If you can’t get enough of the water, you can also take a ferry over to Bainbridge Island. An approximately 35-minute ride will transport you across Elliot Bay and worlds away from Downtown Seattle.

You can hop aboard the ferry at Pier 52, which will drop you off within walking distance to Winslow. Here at the central hub of the island you will find plenty of dining options, shops, museums, and waterfront trails.

Things You Must See in Seattle

One of the most notable attractions on the island is Bloedel Reserve. This 140-acre reserve is home to gardens, ponds, and nature trails where you can spend a few hours exploring. To get here, you will need to take a bus from the ferry terminal.

Olympic Sculpture Park

Olympic Sculpture Park is another popular attraction that you must see in Seattle. Part of the Seattle Art Museum collection (which also includes the Asian Art Museum), this park is open year round. It allows travelers and locals alike the chance to spend some quality time with nature in the park and surrounding walking and biking trails.

Here, you can see across to the Olympic Mountains and marvel at the sculptures that are strategically placed throughout the area. A tour map and other literature about the park can either be found in the park pavilion or online.

Top Things to Do in Seattle

This is one of the largest “green space” in Seattle, so don’t be surprised if there are plenty of other admirers here too. Free tours occur seasonally and last 60 minutes. These tours offer some insight into the design and history of the park and its sculptures.

Sports Stadiums

While in Seattle, sports fans need to venture off to the SODO neighborhood to get their fix of baseball, football, or both.

T-Mobile Park (formerly SafeCo Field) has been home to the Seattle Mariners since the ballpark opened in 1999. Even if the Boys in Blue are not playing, you can take a tour of the facility. This 1-hour tour gets you ground level to see all the stadium has to offer and includes some behind-the-scene areas normally not open to the public.

Top Things to Do in Seattle

If you are cruising later in the Alaska season, you might have a chance to catch a game at Lumen Field, home to the Seattle Seahawks. You can also book a tour of this stadium (90 minutes) on non-game days.

Wine Tasting

Sure, your cruise will have plenty of wine, but it will likely won’t spotlight the local Washington wine scene. There are hundreds of wine-tasting rooms across Lake Washington in Woodinville, but the SODO neighborhood has recently become a hub for tastings, as well.

Top Things to See in Seattle

Local recommendations include EfesteNine Hats, and Rotie for a good sampling of the state’s proud viticulture. These wine-tasting venues are conveniently located a short distance away from the sports stadiums.

Pioneer Square

Adjacent to the two sports stadiums is also Pioneer Square. Pioneer Square is Seattle’s oldest neighborhood and certainly one of the things you must see in Seattle when on a cruise. This historic neighborhood is home to many restaurants, art galleries, and museums. Smith Tower is one of Seattle’s oldest skyscrapers and still offers great views from its 35th floor observation deck.

Things You Must See in Seattle on a Cruise

To get you prepared for your trip to Alaska, you might want to visit the Klondike Gold Rush National Historic Park or take the self-guided Trail to Treasure walking tour through Pioneer Square.

Another popular activity is Bill Speidel’s Underground Tour. As the name implies, this tour literally takes you underground to explore the original Pioneer Square neighborhood. Reconstruction after the Great Seattle Fire in 1889 buried the “original Seattle” underneath. Thus, this 75-minute tour is the only way to explore the interconnecting Seattle Underground.

Museum of Pop Culture (MoPOP)

Nerds and music lovers unite! MoPOP, formerly called the EMP Museum, is where pop culture and art collide. It features some out-of-this-world exhibits, with massive collections of contemporary pop culture.

Examples of exhibits include Nirvana: Taking Punk to the Masses; Fantasy: Worlds of Myths and Magic; Scared to Death: The Thrill of Horror Films; the Science Fiction and Fantasy Hall of Fame; and the Guitar Gallery.

Top Things to Do in Seattle

While exhibits do change periodically, we enjoyed the World of Myths and Magic. This exhibit featuring memorabilia from famous movies and shows like Harry Potter and Lord of the Rings. We were also held captive by the Thrill of Horror Films, and I was in geek heaven reveling in the Science Fiction Hall of Fame.

If you are looking for other museum options the Pacific Science Center and the Museum of Flight are popular choices, as well.

Located about a half hour away from the cruise port, Airboat Rides at Midway offers 1-hour tours on the St. Johns River, sometimes referred to as the Central Florida Everglades.

Merritt Island National Wildlife Refuge

If you want to set off in search of more wildlife while in the area, a visit to the Merritt Island National Wildlife Refuge should also make your list of things to do near Port Canaveral.

This 140,000 acre U.S. National Park was established in 1963 in agreement with NASA and the Kennedy Space Center. It is home to more than 1,500 species of plants and animals. There are a number of tours offered of varying lengths and prices that give you a bird’s eye view of areas including the Port with all the cruise ships, the Canaveral Locks, Cocoa Beach, and the Thousand Islands.

The Classic Tour is approximately 17-20 minutes of flight time for $99.99 per person. This option gives you the opportunity to see the port along with extended time over Cocoa Beach and the Thousand Islands. Here, you can often spot dolphins, sharks, stingrays, and more.

One of these tours definitely makes for the perfect add-on to your cruise vacation.

Bioluminescence Tour

Another tour that allows you to get a unique perspective of the area from sea level is a bioluminescence tour.

You’ve probably heard of the bioluminescent waters of Puerto Rico, but did you know that you can take a bioluminescent kayak or raft tour right in Florida? The Indian River and the Banana River lagoons both have glowing algae.

BK Adventure offers nighttime kayak tours and raft tours to experience this natural beauty. These tours are approximately 1. 5 hours and are offered from a couple different departure points in the Port Canaveral area.

Of course, if you’d rather explore the area’s ecosystem during the day, you can do that too.

Cocoa Beach

Cocoa Beach is located just outside Port Canaveral and is known for its sand and surf. It is also a popular pre-cruise hotel area due to the distance from the pier and the availability of amenities.

Besides the obvious beach day, visitors can stroll the Westgate Cocoa Beach Pier that stretches 800 feet over the Atlantic Ocean. This boardwalk is lined with restaurants, bars, shops, and live music.

There is also the Ron Jon Surf Shop, which is the largest surf shop in the world with its own surf museum, and the Kelly Slater statue. Kelly Slater grew up in Cocoa Beach and learned to surf all along the Space Coast.

If that’s not enough, the 1,200 foot fishing pier that extends into the ocean is a great place to watch the cruise ships sail away. This is a popular location, so do expect a bit of a crowd around sail away time.

While rather bitter sweet, watching your cruise ship sail away with the next group of vacationers might be the perfect way to end your trip.

Fish Lips and Rusty’s are nearby restaurants and also popular spots to watch the ships sail out of port.

Exploration Tower

The Exploration Tower in Port Canaveral is an architectural landmark that offers several educational and interactive exhibits as well as observation decks with stunning views.

The Exploration Tower opened in November 2013 as part of the Canaveral Port Authority’s 60th anniversary celebration.

The 7th floor is home to an outdoor observation deck that features panoramic views of Port Canaveral, the cruise ships, and surrounding beaches and wildlife.

There is even a state-of-the-art theater and a navigation simulator making a visit to the Exploration Tower fun for the whole family.

Currently (June 2022), only the gift shop and outdoor observation deck are open.

Cocoa Beach Aerial Adventures

If you are looking for a little excitement during your visit to Port Canaveral, then you will want to check out Cocoa Beach Aerial Adventures. Here, you can enjoy a day filled with plenty of zipping and climbing fun.

This aerial adventure park offers 7 different courses of varying levels of difficulty with a total of 49 different challenges. New in 2022, there is even the unique ZIPDROP free fall.

The unique ability to traverse through the course as an individual instead of as a group gives participants the flexibility to only complete the challenges with which they are comfortable. This makes it a great activity for all age and skill levels.

During a typical 2-hour climb session, participants usually complete 3 or 4 of the courses.

The park is located between the Banana River and Atlantic Ocean affording spectacular views from atop the lush canopy.

Day Trip to Disney World

If you are taking a cruise from Port Canaveral, you should consider a pre-cruise or post-cruise visit to the most magical place on earth, Disney World. Walt Disney World is located in Orlando, Florida which is a little over an hour away from Port Canaveral.

Walt Disney World is home to the popular Magic Kingdom theme park and Epcot which hosts various festivals throughout the year like the Food and Wine Festival.

Additionally, Hollywood Studios is home to the new Star Wars Galaxy’s Edge. Not to mention, there is also Animal Kingdom with its popular Avatar-themed land, two waterparks, and Disney Springs which is home to several dining and shopping experiences.

While we recommend visiting Disney pre-cruise or post-cruise, some cruise lines do offer shore excursions to the parks during a day visit in port. In a previous post, we break down if it’s actually worth visiting Disney World as a shore excursion.

When many people think of cruising as the months turn colder and summer fades into fall, they automatically think of voyages to Canada and New England filled with colorful foliage and quaint seaside cities. It’s true — voyages in the northeast of the U.S. and the southeast of Canada are famous in fall. But is that actually the best time for a Canada & New England cruise?

Here, we’re going over the best time to go based on the weather, the pricing, the crowds, and — of course — leaf peeping opportunities.

When is the best time for a Canada & New England cruise?

The cruise season in eastern Canada and New England generally starts in late April and runs through October, with ships skipping the coldest months of the year in the region in favor of warmer destinations during late fall and winter.

Holland America Line Canada and New England Cruise Review - Best Time for a Canada & New England Cruise

There’s no “bad” time to visit during the season. However, Canada/New England cruises are generally equated to cruising in autumn for one major reason: leaf peeping. The colorful fall foliage that can be seen if you cruise at just the right time are a major selling point for lots of cruisers, especially those that don’t live in a region that affords them the opportunity to see the vibrant leaves at home. With that being said, other parts of the Canada/New England cruising season have their benefits too.

Best time to cruise to Canada and New England: Weather

When you’re planning an eastern Canada and New England cruise, you probably have several weather-related questions, such as “What months in Canada and New England are the warmest?” or “Which month has the least amount of rain?” So, we will try to answer them below.

Best Time to Cruise Canada/New England: Temperatures

Let’s break down the average high temperatures for three popular Canada/New England itinerary destinations to give you an idea of what to expect during your cruise.

Bar Harbor, Maine:

  • April/May: mid-50s to high 60s
  • June/July/August: mid-70s to 80
  • September/October: high 50s to high 60s

Halifax, Nova Scotia:

  • April/May: high 40s to high 50s
  • June/July/August: high 60s to mid-70s
  • September/October: mid-50s to high 60s

Québec City, Quebec:

  • April/May: high 40s to 60
  • June/July/August: low 70s to high 70s
  • September/October: low 50s to high 60s

Based on the average high temperatures, July and August are the warmest months to visit Canada and New England, right in the middle of the summer season. If you want a cooler experience, visit in April or May at the beginning of the season (you’ll avoid the highest crowd levels as well!) or in September and October at the end of the season.

Best Time to Cruise Canada/New England: Rain

The rainiest months during Canada and New England’s cruising season are May and June. If avoiding rain is your priority, consider booking a voyage in August or September — the least rainy months during the cruise season. And bonus — if you book towards the end of September, you might luck out with the start of the leaves changing from green to vibrant red, orange, and yellow hues.

What is the best time to cruise to Canada and New England for leaf peeping?

As just mentioned, the leaves can start to change towards the end of September in the New England and eastern Canada region. However, this is dependent on a number of factors (mostly temperature and moisture). It does not occur at the exact same time every year.

If the end of a summer is unusually chilly or the start of autumn is especially windy and rainy, that can affect when the leaves change and for how long they stay on the trees. Booking a cruise in advance solely for the purpose of leaf-peeping is always a gamble.

With that being said, your best shot for leaf-peeping is in October, right towards the end of the cruise season. Temperatures are warmer at the start of the month, with average highs in the upper 60s. Towards the end of the month, highs are usually in the upper 50s.

Best Time for a Canada & New England Cruise

How do you avoid cruise crowds in Canada and New England?

The peak season for cruising in New England and eastern Canada is August through the end of the season in October. August is a popular time to visit because it’s the warmest month of the year and summer is still in full swing.

September is a bit of an in-between time because it’s still pretty warm at the start of the month, and the end of the month often brings the first bit of change towards autumn leaves. Since October is the prime month for leaf-peeping, lots of guests head out on voyages that month to catch a glimpse of the vibrant colors and cool coastal weather.

If you aren’t planning your cruise to see the fall leaves and avoiding crowds is a priority, your best bet is to sail in April, May, or June. Just keep in mind that April can be chilly, and May and June are the rainiest months. Weigh whether or not the chance of rain during some of your port days is a big deal to you, and choose accordingly.

Based on all of this info, you might think that July is the sweet spot for avoiding the cold and the worst of the rain and crowds, but that’s only partially true. While you will have warm weather and a tad bit less rain than in May or June, July is the start of peak tourist season in New England and Canada. Crowds will be especially high due to lots of people taking family vacations.

How to Choose a Canada and New England Cruise With Fewer Kids On Board

If you’re looking for a more relaxed atmosphere on your ship with fewer kids, take a cruise in April, May, September, or October — when school is in session — with late April and early-mid May being the safest bets.

Longer cruises are also a better bet on having fewer kids on your ship, as families with young kids don’t tend to take as many extended-length voyages. If you have the time and money, look into Canada/New England itineraries that are at least eight nights or longer. Bonus: you’ll have more ports to explore and more time to enjoy your ship!

What is the cheapest month to cruise to Canada and New England?

In most cases, the cheapest cruise fares you’ll find for a voyage to Canada and New England will be at the very start of the season at the end of April and into May. It’s still chilly in many destinations in the region and the busy summer season isn’t yet in full swing. This is often referred to as shoulder season.

Plus, even though fall also gets chilly, spring doesn’t command a premium the way fall does because it’s not the prime season for leaf-peeping.

If budget is a major factor in the planning of your vacation, consider looking into a one-way sailing. For Canada/New England routes, they often start in New York City or a port in New England and end in Quebec City. This is especially helpful if you live within driving distance of either the starting or ending port. Not only might the cruise fares be a bit cheaper, but you’ll only have to pay for a one-way flight.

What cruise lines go to Canada and New England?

All the major U.S. based cruise lines sail Canada/New England itineraries, plus a number of luxury brands as well. The cruise lines where you’ll find the most options for a voyage up the northeastern seaboard include Princess, Royal Caribbean, Norwegian Cruise Line, Viking, Ponant, Oceania, and Holland America.

Other lines that offer Canada & New England options are Seabourn, Silversea, Regent Seven Seas, Crystal, Cunard, MSC, and Celebrity. Lines including Carnival and Disney occasionally offer one-off type voyages to Canada and New England as well.

cruise shore excursions with the cruise line

What types of clothes should I pack for a Canada and New England cruise?

When cruising to Canada and New England during the summer months, pack as you would for a trip north in the summer or for most warm-weather cruises. Plus, add in a couple pairs of pants and extra sweaters for layering just in case. That means t-shirts, tank tops, shorts, sundresses, polo shirts, button-downs, sandals, and sneakers for walking around in port.

It could get a bit chilly on an overcast day and definitely will most nights, which is where the sweaters, a sweatshirt, and some jeans or other pants will come in handy. I also find it a necessity to have at least a sweater or two for dinnertime on the ship, as the air conditioning can make it a bit chilly indoors even on the warmest sailings.

For voyages towards the beginning or end of the Canada/New England season: layer, layer, layer! Even in April or October you might have some warm t-shirt weather when the sun is out and high. However, spring and fall cruises will also have plenty of chilly moments as well. Bring sweaters, hoodies, and a jacket that you can layer over short and long-sleeve shirts. Pack a few pairs of shorts, but be sure to have plenty of pant options as well. Long dresses with warmer fabric can work for exploring port (especially when layered with a nice jacket or sweater) or going to dinner.

Expect to wear socks and comfy sneakers, boots, or other enclosed shoes in port and maybe even on the ship on colder days. Bring a hat or knit headband to keep your ears warm — especially in April and October. A raincoat with hood and umbrella are must-haves during the rainiest months of the season.

Galveston is an excellent drive-to option for cruisers in Texas and its surrounding states. Driving to a cruise port can be a cheaper option for families than flying, but parking doesn’t have to cost a fortune.

Despite being a relatively small island, Galveston has several parking options in addition to the official parking facilities at the cruise port.

Most lots are concentrated around Galveston’s legacy terminals, Terminal 25 and 28, formerly Terminals 1 and 2. In 2022, Royal Caribbean built its own state-of-the-art cruise terminal called Pier 10, adding a third cruise pier to the Port of Galveston.

If you are departing on a Royal Caribbean cruise, keep in mind that you might not be within walking distance of most cruise parking lots if your ship is docked at Pier 10.

This guide breaks down your cruise parking options in Galveston by price, location, and shuttle services.

Port of Galveston Parking Lots

The official parking lots for each cruise terminal are not only close but straightforward. These lots are the only ones officially affiliated with Disney Cruise Line, Carnival Cruise Line, and Royal Caribbean, according to the website. Additionally, the Port of Galveston offers a disabled veterans program with reduced prices on cruise parking.

Price: Official cruise parking rates prior to taxes and fees for the economy lots are $65 for four days; $70 for five days; $80 for six days; $95 for seven days; and $110 for eight days. There is an increase of $15 to $25 per reservation for the express lot.

Location: Lot A and Lot B are the economy lots on 33rd Street serving Terminals 25 and 28. An express lot is also located within walking distance of these terminals at 2702 Harborside Drive. There are two other express lots located at 2502 Harborside and 150 25th Street.

Port parking for Royal Caribbean’s Pier 10 is onsite at the North Lot (1152 Royal Caribbean Way) or with shuttle service from the South Lot (1201 Royal Caribbean Way) or the Pier 14 Lot (1390 Royal Caribbean Way).

Lots A and B are 0.7 miles from their respective terminals. The Express lot is 0.2 miles or a five-minute walk from the cruise port. Royal Caribbean’s parking facilities are close to the pier.

Shuttle: The economy lots have a complimentary shuttle service.

Galveston Park N Cruise

This family-owned parking facility offers secure, indoor and outdoor parking. Rates vary by dates and occupancy. The Park N Cruise is currently available to cruisers sailing with Carnival Cruise Line and Princess Cruises.

Location: The Park N Cruise lot is located on New Strand Street, just 500 feet from the cruise port. It’s a two-minute walk from the cruise terminal.

Shuttle: No shuttles are available; guests can simply walk across the street from the parking lot to access their cruise if they depart from Terminals 25 or 28.

Why You Should Take a Ruby Princess Cruise to Alaska

Shuttle: Free shuttles run every 15 minutes to and from the parking lot to the cruise terminal.

Cruise Park is only open on Saturdays and Sundays. At time of publication, Galveston Cruise Parking serves Carnival Dream, Carnival Vista, and Ruby Princess.

Price: Seven nights of cruise parking is $74.25 on the Cruise Park website ($10.61 per night).

Carnival Adding Fourth Ship to Galveston

EZ Cruise Parking

EZ Cruise is just two blocks from Terminals 25 and 28. At the time of publication, EZ Cruise accommodates Carnival and Royal Caribbean cruisers looking for parking, as well as anyone booked on Disney Magic or Norwegian Prima.

When the lots are full for any given sail date, the EZ site will suggest affiliate parking lot Port Parking at 202 37th Street.

Price: The range for EZ Parking is about $11 to $15 per day, depending on length of cruise and the option to rent a slip-on cover for your vehicle. If you’re a repeat cruiser, EZ Cruise Parking offers a loyalty program with an instant 10 percent off. Taxes and fees are not included in the price.

Location: EZ Cruise Parking is at 2727 Santa Fe Place, located 0.1 miles or a three-minute walk to the main cruise port. Royal Caribbean’s Pier 10 is about 1.5 miles away.

Shuttle: A shuttle is available and runs from about 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. from the lot to the terminal. However, you can select “no shuttle,” when booking, instead opting to walk to your ship and save about $20 on your reservation.

Falstaff Cruise Parking

Falstaff Cruise Parking is the farthest lot on this list from the port, at 1 mile. However, shuttle service is available from this 24/7-monitored parking facility.

Price: For a one-week cruise, gated parking costs $80 ($11.43 per day), while a covered indoor parking space costs $100 ($14.30 per day). In addition, there is a service fee added on that’s 8.5 percent of your total parking price.

Location: The Falstaff lot is at 3402 Church Street. It’s a four-minute shuttle ride to Terminals 25 and 28 or an eight-minute ride to Royal Caribbean’s Pier 10.

Shuttle: A colorful shuttle touting “drive in, cruise out” services the Falstaff Cruise Parking facility. Shuttles run on a loop all day, taking between 15 to 20 minutes to complete their round trip. While the shuttle rides are complimentary, Falstaff has bundled a portion of its shuttle fees into the price of parking.

Galveston Cruise Parking Tips

  • Not every parking lot accommodates every cruise line; check each website for details and hours.
  • Cash is not accepted at most lots, including the Port of Galveston. Book parking with a credit card and bring it with you.
  • Cruise lines recommend dropping off all passengers and luggage at the pier prior to parking, but nearly all shuttles accommodate luggage. If you have a larger party, you might be charged a fee for taking up more than a few seats on the shuttle.
  • An important caveat when it comes to cruise parking is that RVs and oversized vehicles are typically not allowed. When RVs are allowed at a cruise parking lot, the rates are higher than listed.
  • In addition to port-approved and third-party parking lots, long-term parking and shuttle service can be found in conjunction with many of Galveston’s hotels.

Cruising is heating up in Texas. The 2023 cruise season out of Galveston cruise port is its busiest on record, with an estimated 362 cruise ship departures — nearly one for every day.

With more ships and cruise lines than ever before, Galveston will see a record number of cruise passengers flying and driving in to port. To put it in perspective, Galveston cruise port welcomed more than 1 million guests back in 2019.

Located just 45 minutes from the open seas, Galveston is well situated in the Gulf of Mexico for sailings to ports like Cozumel, Mexico; Belize; or Montego Bay, Jamaica.

Cruise lovers within reach of the Lone Star State have a lot to celebrate. The following guide will brief you on everything you need to know about getting to and sailing from the very special Port of Galveston.

Which cruise lines sail out of Galveston?

Carnival Cruise Line, Royal Caribbean, Disney Cruise Line, Norwegian Cruise Line, and Princess Cruises all sail from Galveston. In recent years, more ships have been deployed to Texas, including brand-new and popular vessels.

In 2023, the 5,374-passenger Carnival Jubilee will launch and make its debut setting sail from Galveston as its homeport. The addition of its new flagship will increase Carnival’s presence in the state from three to four ships. In 2024, Carnival will also introduce nine- and 12-night voyages from Galveston, which are unusually long cruises for the brand.

Best Cruise Ships You Can Sail on in 2023 - Complete Guide to Cruising out of Galveston Cruise Port

Royal Caribbean christened its new, $125 million Galveston cruise terminal called Pier 10 in November 2022. This new terminal can accommodate the largest vessels from its Oasis Class to its new Icon Class. The cruise line currently has a fleet of three ships sailing from Galveston including Allure of the Seas.

Princess has returned to Galveston after years away, bringing Regal Princess and Ruby Princess for a variety of Caribbean itineraries as well as a special sailing through the Panama Canal.

Norwegian Prima, the line’s 2022 introduction godmothered by Katy Perry, will sail weeklong itineraries from Galveston in late 2023.

Additionally, Disney Magic sails four- to seven-night Western Caribbean itineraries from Texas.

Which airport is closest to the Galveston cruise port?

The George Bush Intercontinental Airport (IAH) and the William P. Hobby Airport (HOU) are both commercial airports in Houston serving Galveston. There is no direct airlift to the island of Galveston, so cruisers outside of driving distance must fly via Houston.

The Galveston cruise port is about 70 miles from the Intercontinental airport (75 minutes) or 41 miles from Hobby (45 minutes).

How do you get to and from the Galveston cruise terminal?

There are three cruise terminals at the Galveston cruise port.

Terminal 25 (formerly Cruise Terminal 1) typically hosts Carnival and Princess ships and is located at 2502 Harborside Drive.

Terminal 28 (formerly Cruise Terminal 2) is where Disney and Norwegian will dock, as well as the occasional Princess or Carnival ship, and it’s located at 2702 Harborside Drive.

Royal Caribbean’s Pier 10 (aka Terminal 3) is located about a mile east of the other legacy terminals at Harborside Drive and 14th Street. Use the address 1152 Royal Caribbean Way.

Shuttle service from the airport to Galveston is significantly cheaper than booking a rideshare through Uber or Lyft. Still, expect prices in the $100 range due to distance.

If you’re driving, the Port of Galveston can be reached from the north and west by taking Exit 1C off Interstate 45 South toward Galveston Island. Once you turn left on Harborside Drive, continue nearly 5 miles to make another left on Kempner/22nd Street. From there, follow signs to your cruise terminal.

The Port of Galveston can also be reached by ferry service. From the east, take State Highway 87 West toward Galveston Island to board the Port Bolivar vehicle ferry system. Exit the ferry onto Highway 87/Ferry Road, then turn right on Harborside Drive. Continue with directions as listed above.

Is there parking at the Galveston cruise port?

Yes, there is parking at the Galveston cruise port. There are economy parking lot options at the Galveston cruise terminal. Additionally, there’s a “park and walk” option in a covered parking garage closer to the ships.

Cruisers can secure their parking space in advance through the Port of Galveston’s online service, ensuring a prepaid, discounted rate and a guaranteed spot.

For more information on parking at Galveston cruise port, click here. We break down all the options including location, price, and if shuttle service is available.

Which hotels are closest to the Galveston cruise terminal?

There are various hotels for all budgets near the Galveston cruise terminals. These include more than a dozen offering complimentary shuttle service to your cruise ship.

Galveston is already well known to Southerners as a resort destination. So, it’s not a bad idea to consider spending a few days here before or after your cruise. In addition to more vacation time, some hotels accommodate secure, long-term parking.

Physically closest to the cruise port is the Harbor House Hotel & Marina at Pier 21. Less than a half-mile away from the Galveston cruise terminal, the Harbor House is within walking distance. If you don’t want to lug your bags 8 minutes down the road, it’s an easy 3-minute ride. Cruisers who drove in for their sailing can park their car at the hotel for $15 per night, plus tax.

Cruisers looking for a great value when it comes to driving in for their Galveston cruise can consider a stay at the Holiday Inn Resort Galveston (On The Beach, an IHG Hotel). This Holiday Inn offers competitive rates to stay, as well as only $8 per night for long-term cruise parking for the first five nights. After the maximum of $40 is reached, your car will remain parked for free. Not only is the parking rate super reasonable, but the Holiday Inn Resort Galveston also offers a free shuttle to the cruise port.

From recognizable chain hotel brands to boutique properties like 19th-century bed-and-breakfast George Manor, Galveston has a stay available for every taste. The good news is that with only 41.2 square miles of land mass in Galveston (it’s only 3 miles wide), there is nowhere on the island that is super far from the cruise port.

What is there to do in Galveston?

From its resort-style beaches to its historic neighborhood streets, Galveston has the added benefit of being a destination with or without its cruise facilities. Take the kids to enjoy Boardwalk-style rides and amusements at Pleasure Pier or stroll antique shops with a loved one admiring charming architecture along the way.

Apart from its activity-packed shores, one of Galveston’s marquee attractions is Moody Gardens, with a 10-story tall pyramid housing an aquarium as well as a collection of 1,700 plants and animals. Moody Mansion pays homage to the one of the wealthiest families to call Galveston home. There are even self-guided tours of the Victorian-era estate available.

Take to the indoors with a museum visit or go fishing under the Texan sun along one of the Seawall’s many piers. Whatever the mood or the weather, Galveston shows up with plenty to see, do, and experience year-round.

Do you need a passport to sail from Galveston?

The requirement for a passport on a cruise is dictated by where your sailing begins and ends. If your cruise departs and arrives round trip from Galveston, that means it is considered a “closed loop” sailing within the U.S. Therefore, you would not need a passport; U.S. citizens just need a U.S. ID and birth certificate to sail.

Still, it’s always helpful to have a passport. This is especially true when visiting any foreign ports of call like Mexico or Grand Cayman. In the unlikely event you don’t make it back onboard your ship in time for departure, you’ll still need a passport to travel home or to the next port.

Always consult with your cruise line on travel requirements for your entire party prior to booking or boarding.

Conclusion: Is Galveston a good cruise port?

Galveston is a solid choice (and the only option) as a departure port for families looking to take a cruise within range of Texas. The closest other cruise port to Galveston is nearly 400 miles away in New Orleans.

After more than 20 years as a cruise port, Galveston has added a third, state-of-the-art cruise terminal and new ships and cruise lines all within the span of a single year. In addition to its cruise offerings, the adjacent city of Galveston is well suited for vacationers of all ages, with a variety of accommodation offerings and plenty of activities to enjoy.

Although the location of the closest commercial airport is in Houston, nearly an hour away, Galveston offers the Southern cruise market an appealing drive-to option bordering the Gulf of Mexico. According to the Galveston Chamber of Commerce, Galveston is the fourth most popular cruise port in North America, following the busy cruise ports of Florida.

Are you looking to cruise without a passport? For U.S. citizens, passports are not required for all cruises. While we do recommend having a passport just in case, these are the top cruise destinations you can visit without one.

Can you cruise without a passport?

Yes, you can cruise without a passport (in certain situations). For U.S. citizens, a passport is not required for closed loop cruises. A closed loop cruise is a cruise that begins and ends in the same U.S. port.

For a closed loop cruise, a birth certificate and a government issued ID are the only forms of documentation required. The birth certificate must be the original or a certified copy with the raised seal. A photocopy will not be permitted.

Keep in mind that these requirements are for U.S. citizens only. For all other nationalities, a passport is generally required to cruise.

things you should never do on a cruise

Of course, if you are traveling internationally, U.S. citizens will need a passport. A passport is required for all international flights and for any cruise that embarks or disembarks in a foreign country.

Further, passports are also required for cruises that begin and end in different locations (open loop cruises).

Where Can I Cruise Without a Passport?

You can cruise without a passport to the Caribbean

The Caribbean is one of the most popular cruise destinations, and the good news is that you can cruise the Caribbean without a passport. Many of the newest mega-ships from contemporary cruise lines visit popular islands in the Caribbean region. There are also several U.S. departure points for Caribbean cruises.

The Caribbean offers that picturesque tropical vacation of which you are dreaming. With itineraries generally divided into Eastern Caribbean, Western Caribbean, and Southern Caribbean routes, you will have plenty of choices when it comes to a Caribbean cruise.

Which islands are visited does vary slightly by the cruise ship and cruise line. However, all islands offer a variety of popular activities like beach breaks, island tours, snorkeling, and historic and cultural tours. There will also be adventure activities like zip lining and off-road tours at most ports of call.

Caribbean Cruise Planning Guide

Again, do keep in mind if you decide to cruise without a passport, you might not be able to get off the ship in certain locations. For example, the Caribbean island of Martinique requires that all cruise passengers have a valid passport to go ashore.

You can cruise to the Bahamas without a passport

The Bahamas is another popular cruise destination that you can visit without a passport. Normally, these cruises depart from the East Coast of the United States, primarily from Florida homeports. If you are looking for a shorter duration cruise or just a quick getaway, then a Bahamas cruise is definitely for you.

While you are probably familiar with Nassau, Bahamas, this region is also home to many cruise line private destinations. These private islands offer exclusive access for passengers sailing with the cruise line. These islands usually offer included food, beach access with loungers, and other amenities.

Perfect Day at CocoCay

For instance, MSC Cruises has a brand new Bahamian paradise at Ocean Cay Marine Reserve. Virgin Voyages has its new Beach Club at Bimini. Additionally, who could forget Royal Caribbean’s Perfect Day at CocoCay. There is also Norwegian Cruise Line’s Great Stirrup Cay, Disney Cruise Line’s Castaway Cay, Carnival Cruise Line’s Half Moon Cay, and Princess Cays.

You can cruise without a passport from Seattle to Alaska

For many, the seasonal cruise destination of Alaska is high on their bucket lists. An Alaskan cruise even lures those who wouldn’t necessarily consider a cruise. These vacations are more about the destination than the cruise ship. Cruises to Alaska appeal to nature lovers, photographers, and explorers. On an Alaskan cruise, you can set off in search of glacial vistas, wildlife encounters, and some of the freshest seafood.

Most major cruise lines offer sailings in this region. The most popular U.S. embarkation port for Alaska cruises is Seattle. Though, there are also roundtrip cruises from Vancouver and one-way itineraries.

These itineraries usually include port stops in JuneauKetchikan, and Skagway, Alaska. These itineraries can visit Victoria and Vancouver, British Columbia as well. These ports of call offer a variety of shore excursion options from helicopter rides over glaciers, to whale watching, bear sightings, salmon bakes, and historic gold route tours.

Top Things to Do in Ketchikan Alaska

Keep in mind that even though you are not required to have a passport to cruise to Alaska, some excursions like the White Pass Railway in Skagway may require a passport.

Do you need a passport for Hawaii?

The accessibility of the Hawaiian islands makes it a popular cruise destination especially for those looking to stay within the United States.

Most Hawaiian cruises depart from the island of Oahu, visiting the Big Island and Maui. Some cruises also visit the island of Kauai. With attractions like Pearl Harbor, Waikiki Beach, and a selection of luaus, Oahu definitely requires a couple days to explore either pre-cruise or post cruise.

The Big Island‘s landscape is very diverse with volcanoes, mountainous terrain, beaches, rainforests, and everything in between. One of our favorite excursions was a helicopter ride over the island.

An over-night visit to the island of Maui is common on a Hawaiian cruise as well. Some of Maui’s most popular attractions include the Road to Hana and Haleakala Crater.

cruise without a passport

Several cruise lines normally have ships making stops in the region. As the only ship sailing in Hawaii year-round, NCL’s Pride of America is an easy choice. This Americana-themed ship usually sails a 7-night round-trip itinerary from Honolulu offering a comprehensive Polynesian experience.

You can cruise without a passport to Bermuda

If you are looking to cruise without a passport, Bermuda is another popular choice. This British territory is home to some of the friendliest people and arguably the best beaches and natural landscapes in the Atlantic.

Given that the island is further north than many of the other popular tropical destinations, the weather is a bit more seasonal here. Therefore, cruises to Bermuda generally occur from April to October. Still, that is almost half of the year to find some vacation time to enjoy all that Bermuda has to offer.

Best Things to Do in Bermuda on a Cruise

Many of the major cruise lines usually have ships that visit Bermuda. Most even offer two or three day stays to enjoy this beautiful location. You can use this time to explore Kings Wharf and other popular stops like St. George’s and Hamilton.

A Bermuda cruise might be the perfect choice for those living in the Northeastern United States as there will be no flying involved. Most Bermuda cruises leave from New York or Cape Liberty, New Jersey. A few also depart from Boston, MA, Baltimore, MD, and occasionally some southern ports like Florida.

You can go on a Mexican Riviera cruise without a passport

For those living on the West Coast, the Mexican Riviera might be the perfect destination to which to cruise without a passport.

Ports in the Mexican Riviera, like Cabo San Lucas and Puerto Vallarta, offer amazing beaches, immersive cultural and historical experiences, and a festive atmosphere day and night. The Mexican Riviera is much like the Caribbean for West Coasters.

Like many of the tropical cruise regions, there are plenty of beach breaks, island tours, food tastings, and nature excursions to experience in the Mexican Riviera. Plus, there are exclusive offerings like whale watching, cultural shows like Rhythms of the Night, and some unique landscapes that you can’t find in the Caribbean.

cruise without a passport

Mexican Riviera cruises most often depart from California homeports from brands including Carnival Cruise Line, Princess Cruises, and Norwegian Cruise Line. Royal Caribbean’s Navigator of the Seas also sails this region.

Do you need a passport to cruise Canada and New England?

Last but not least, you can also cruise without a passport to Canada and New England. Canada/New England cruise itineraries are seasonal, running from May to October with the majority of sailings occurring during the Fall.

As native New Englanders, we sometimes take the fall foliage for granted. However, this seasonal change is a sight to behold for many.

Popular ports of call include Boston, MA; Bar Harbor, ME; Portland, ME; Halifax, Nova Scotia; and St. John, New Brunswick. Each of these ports offers its own historic and coastal charm.

In our homeport of Boston, you can learn more about the founding of the United States by trekking the Boston Freedom Trail. You can dive into the history of the Titanic when in Halifax. Or, you can see the Victorian era architecture and historic homes of Portland and visit Arcadia National Park in Bar Harbor.

Our local cuisine is another great reason to cruise to Canada and New England. Portland is home to the one and only Maine Lobster, but the waters off these coasts are home to other seafood delights as well. You can enjoy a rich and creamy cup of New England clam chowder or some Rhode Island style calamari. There are also plenty of sweet treats including maple syrup, whoopie pies, and Ben and Jerry’s ice cream from nearby Vermont.

Like Bermuda cruises, popular embarkation ports for Canada/New England cruises are in the Northeast. New York, Cape Liberty (NJ), Baltimore, and Boston are the most popular.

Marriott Harbor Beach Resort – Location and Transportation

It’s hard to believe that some cruisers still fly into port on the day of their cruise. Yes, it is true that the Fort Lauderdale-Hollywood International airport is only a short distance away from Port Everglades. In fact, it’s less than 5 miles away. This cruise terminal is easily accessed by taxi, Uber, bus, rail, or airport transfers.

Marriott Harbor Beach Resort Hotel Review

Still, we always suggest flying a day before your cruise. This is especially important with all of the delays, cancellations, and headaches when traveling right now.

Not to mention, one thing we love about cruising from Fort Lauderdale is the surrounding area and the plethora of things to do.

Our recent sailing on Celebrity Edge was the first sailing in the U.S. in 2021, so we did not want to take any chances. There was no way we were missing this historic cruise.

Further, Riva is a family-friendly option serving up breakfast/brunch along with ocean views.

Recap of Marriott Harbor Beach Resort Hotel Review

For our one night, pre-cruise stay at the Marriott Harbor Beach Resort, we were certainly spoiled. In fact, we did not have enough time to experience all the hotel has to offer.

We spent most of our day on the beach, even if the weather didn’t want to fully cooperate. While the lagoon pool looked great, we didn’t get a chance to take a dip.

For dinner, we enjoyed the outdoor terrace along with food and drinks from the Sea Level Restaurant and Ocean Bar. We even spotted a cruise ship sailing away from Port Everglades.

Overall, the hotel features more than enough dining options and activities to satisfy all types of travelers. The rooms are open-concept and provided more than enough space for the two of us. We particularly enjoyed the ocean views from our balcony.

We can certainly see ourselves staying at this hotel again when cruising from Fort Lauderdale. While a bit pricey, this 4-star hotel provides upscale accommodations for the refined traveler. Whether you are looking to extend your cruise vacation or for a quick beach getaway, you can’t go wrong with the Marriott Harbor Beach Resort hotel.

Vaccinations at Port Everglades Getting Shots to Mariners at Sea

May. 21, 2021

BROWARD COUNTY, FL — Mariners aboard cruise and cargo ships docking at Port Everglades are receiving COVID-19 vaccinations through partnerships that include the Florida Division of Emergency Management (FDEM), the Port, Seafarers’ House, Celebrity Cruises, Holland America Line, Princess Cruises and Royal Caribbean International.

Port Everglades Providing Vaccinations

Within the past two weeks, more than 1,570 mariners aboard some 25 cruise and cargo ships have been vaccinated. The vaccination program at Port Everglades will continue throughout June and is also open to all port workers and those who conduct business at Port Everglades.

In addition, the Port worked with the state to set up a mobile site that is open to the public at the Resolve Marine Academy at 1550 SE 17th Street in Fort Lauderdale. For more information, call 720-530-4474.

Seafarers’ House at Port Everglades is assisting in the effort by transporting health care workers directly to ships dockside to administer vaccinations.

“We are grateful to the State of Florida and our cruise line partners for making the vaccines available to those at sea,” said Jonathan Daniels, Port Everglades Chief Executive and Port Director. “This is a vital humanitarian effort to reach crew members who often don’t have access to landside medical facilities.”

Port Everglades is one of five Florida seaports where the Florida Division of Emergency Management has arranged for port workers to be vaccinated.

About Port Everglades

As one of Florida’s leading economic powerhouses, Broward County’s Port Everglades is the gateway for international trade and cruise vacations. Consistently ranked among the top three busiest cruise ports in the world, Port Everglades is also one of the nation’s leading container ports and South Florida’s main seaport for receiving petroleum products including gasoline, jet fuel and alternative fuels. The Port Everglades Department is a self-supporting Enterprise Fund of Broward County, Florida government with operating revenues of almost $145.6 million in Fiscal Year 2020 (October 1, 2019 through September 30, 2020).  It does not rely on local tax dollars for operations. The total value of economic activity related to Port Everglades is more than $29 billion. More than 196,000 Florida jobs are impacted by the Port, including 10,389 people who work for companies that provide direct services to Port Everglades.  For more information on Port Everglades, visit porteverglades.net or email PortEverglades@broward.org.

NEW ROYAL CARIBBEAN INTERNATIONAL CRUISE TERMINAL A ‘GAME CHANGER’ FOR GALVESTON

As if restarting cruising in 2021 isn’t enough great news, Royal Caribbean International recently announced details about its new cruise terminal at Pier 10 and its positive impacts on the local economy.

Two Royal Caribbean Group executives were featured speakers at the annual Galveston Island Convention & Visitors Bureau Summit on May 5. Russell Benford, vice president of Government Relations, Americas, and Joshua Carroll, vice president of Destination Development and Deployment, gave the audience of tourism and hospitality leaders the latest news about the project and their company’s community engagement commitment.

New Royal Caribbean Cruise Terminal is a Game Changer for Galveston

The $110 million project will generate an estimated 400 Texas construction jobs and 400 local operations jobs. The terminal will feature state-of-the-art technology, including mobile check-in and will be designed and developed sustainably to meet LEED (Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design) certification standards.

Royal Caribbean is beginning preliminary construction work and targeting completion in late 2022, when the first Oasis Class ship, Allure of the Seas is scheduled to sail for the first time from the new terminal. The Galveston Wharves Construction & Maintenance team did site and utilities work during 2020 and early 2021 to prepare the site for construction.

While uncertainty created by the global health crisis slowed things down a bit, the project is now full steam ahead. Benford told the audience that Royal Caribbean, which employs hundreds of thousands of team members around the world, pressed the pause button for a bit and re-evaluated its 2021 global plans.

“We went from over 100 projects to three – one of those being Galveston.”

Carroll said that Royal Caribbean and the cruise industry is working closely with the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention to identify ways to resume cruising safely this summer.

Oasis Class Ship a Game-Changer

Bringing a Royal Caribbean Oasis Class ship to Galveston, the fourth most popular cruise port in North America is the driver for the new terminal.  Allure of the Seas, one of the world’s largest cruise ships, will host 5,400 guests with world-class dining and entertainment.

Benford said that Royal Caribbean’s Oasis Class ship will draw cruise visitors from around the U.S. to Galveston as both a cruise and vacation destination. The ship’s 2,200 crew members will make Galveston one of their shopping, banking and dining hotspots when the ship is in port.

Royal Caribbean is committed to being a part of the Galveston community engaging locally based on its three community engagement pillars – respect, communication and collaboration. Benford said that he and his team will look for ways to be a part of Galveston.

Mayor Craig Brown, who participated in the panel discussion, said that the city will leverage its partnership with Royal Caribbean to connect the terminal to the downtown historic district, possibly with a rubber-tired trolley to transport passengers.

All of this is great news. When we all work together toward common goals, everyone wins.
