Complete Guide to All the Cruise Ports in Mexico

Are cruise ports in Mexico safe?

According to the U.S. Department of State’s travel advisories for Mexico at the time of writing, a ‘Do Not Travel’ advisory is in effect for the states where Manzanillo, Ixtapa-Zihuatanejo, Acapulco, Topolobampo, and Mazatlán are located. Further, a ‘Reconsider Travel’ advisory is in effect for the states where Ensenada, Puerto Vallarta, and Guaymas are located.

cruise ports in Mexico

This is not to say that you need to completely cancel a cruise that visits these places or not even consider booking one that stops there. But if you do take a voyage to one of these ports, we recommend either staying within the developed port area or taking an organized excursion — not venturing out too far on your own.

If going ashore at all makes you uncomfortable, consider staying on the ship that day and enjoying it while it’s much less crowded! Remember that it’s in the best interest of the cruise lines to keep their passengers safe. If the situation gets too bad in a particular area, cruise lines have been known to cancel calls to that port entirely to keep their guests and crew safe.

As for all other ports in Mexico, it’s always good to exercise a healthy level of caution. Leave your expensive accessories and jewelry on the ship, pay attention to your surroundings, and try to stay in more highly trafficked/touristy areas. Like with most countries, there are safer areas than others in Mexico, and certainly some ports are more advisable to visit than others. Check the latest Department of State travel advisories before you book and again right before sailing to help inform your decisions.

San José del Cabo

Cruise lines that visit San Jose del Cabo: Lindblad Expeditions and UnCruise Adventures.

Most cruise ships that visit the southern end of the Baja California Peninsula are heading to Cabo San Lucas, which is just a 30 minutes’ drive from San José del Cabo. However, sometimes very small cruise lines like to dock at San José del Cabo instead.

Heading over to Cabo San Lucas is an option for passengers who dock at this port, but San José del Cabo has plenty for a port day on its own. These include exploring the downtown art district, hitting the nearby beaches which are popular for surfing, going deep-sea fishing, or touring local breweries.

Cruise lines that visit Acapulco: Norwegian Cruise Line, Regent Seven Seas, Oceania, Silversea, and Crystal.

Acapulco is one of the biggest Mexican party destinations. But it’s also one of the most dangerous cruise ports in Mexico due to crime. Guests should exercise caution when visiting Acapulco, and we recommend taking an organized excursion through your cruise line.

Things to do include hitting the beach; exploring shops, restaurants, and bars near the port area; exploring Old Acapulco; and watching cliff divers at La Quebrada.

Scuba diving and snorkeling are popular activities in Manzanillo as well.

Cabo Pulmo

Cruise line that visits Cabo Pulmo: Lindblad Expeditions.

Cabo Pulmo is a tiny resort town that’s world-renowned for its unspoiled marine landscape. Ixtapa-Zihuatanejo

Cruise lines that visit Ixtapa-Zihuatanejo: Holland America, Norwegian Cruise Line, and Oceania Cruises.

When docking at the Ixtapa-Zihuatanejo cruise port, guests have the option to visit one or both of the two towns that the port serves: Ixtapa and Zihuatanejo (located three miles apart). Guests can hit the beach, go shopping, enjoy local cuisine, and visit shops selling lots of handmade goods in both towns. Deep sea fishing, snorkeling, scuba diving, and kayaking are also popular activities.

Topolobampo

Cruise lines that visit Topolobampo: There are no current cruises scheduled to visit in 2024 or 2025.

There are no current voyages that have calls to Topolobampo. However, it does have cruise ship facilities, and Holland America has visited in the past. Popular activities to do in the area include taking a picturesque train ride through the Copper Canyon, hitting the beach, going snorkeling, heading out on a deep-sea fishing excursion, and enjoying the local cuisine.

Santa Rosalia

Cruise lines that visit Santa Rosalia: There are no current cruises scheduled to visit in 2024 or 2025.

Founded by the French, architecture in this small, old mining town is European-inspired but the culture is thoroughly Mexican. Guests can explore the town, visiting the Iglesia de Santa Barbara (Church of Santa Barbara) and Panaderia El Boleo, a bakery that still uses a wood-fired stove to bake bread and pastries.

]]>

When considering the best time to go on a cruise, there are multiple factors that have to be accounted for — namely the region you want to sail. The best time for a Caribbean cruise isn’t going to be the same as the best time for a northern Europe or Alaska voyage, for example. Other factors like cost, weather, and crowds might also be things you take into consideration.

To help you figure out when you should best aim for taking a cruise, we’re breaking down our recommendations by region.

How to Pick the Best Time to Go on a Cruise

Caribbean and Bahamas

There isn’t necessarily any “bad” time to cruise to the Caribbean or Bahamas, with the region welcoming cruise ships all year-round. However there are things to take into consideration, such as hurricane season which runs from June through November. Prices tend to be a bit cheaper from September through November, because of this and because kids are back in school.

Best Time to Go on a Cruise

Weather and crowd-wise, we recommend taking a Caribbean or Bahamas cruise in the January to mid-May time period, not counting school break weeks. The weather is more mild this time of year, it’s not hurricane season, and crowds shouldn’t be quite as heavy when school is in session.

Alaska

The Alaska cruise season generally runs from mid-April through September; cruise ships don’t sail in the region when it’s at its coldest throughout the winter. Of the cruising season, there isn’t a clear-cut answer when it comes to when is “best.”

To avoid crowds, choose a voyage during the shoulder season in April, May, or September. The least rainy month is May, while the warmest (and busiest) will be July and August. Certain times of the Alaska cruise season also increase your chances of seeing wildlife and/or the Norther Lights.

Mediterranean

Cruise ships sail in the Mediterranean all year long, but the primary season runs from April into early November. For more mild weather and less crowds than during the busy summer season, aim for a Mediterranean voyage in early May or September.

Best Time to Go on a Cruise

For the lowest crowds, look for one of the few voyages sailing in the winter or early spring. If you’re looking for warmth and sunbathing weather, June and July are good bets — avoid August if possible due to the hottest temperatures and highest crowd levels.

Mexican Riviera

There isn’t really a “bad” time to cruise to Mexico’s west coast, as the weather ranges from balmy to hot the majority of the year, and cruise ships sail there year-round.

For warm weather that isn’t too hot and the best chance at no rain, look to visit the Mexican Riviera during the winter and into early spring. As long as you avoid time periods where kids are off from school (Christmas break, winter break, spring break, etc.), you’ll also encounter fewer crowds during this timeframe.

EXCLUSIVE SAVINGS: Get Deals on Your Next Cruise Now!

Bermuda

The Bermuda cruise season generally runs from late March into early November. For mild weather, cheaper cruise fares, and fewer crowds, try to sail right at the beginning of the season in April or May. If you don’t mind spring break crowds, Good Friday and Easter is a fun time to visit Bermuda as there are lots of fun treats to eat and a Good Friday kite flying event at Horseshoe Bay Beach.

If enjoying the fanfare of a yacht racing event is more your speed, try to plan your cruise for the end of April at the beginning of the Bermuda International Invitational Race Week.

Best Time to Go on a Cruise

Northern Europe

Though cruises are available in northern Europe year-round, you’ll find the largest amount of voyages during the warmer months in spring, summer, and the beginning of fall. The best season to take a cruise in northern Europe weather-wise is in the summer from June through August. If you’re okay with cooler weather and want fewer crowds, opt for a sailing in September or October.

Canada/New England

The best time to visit Canada and New England is highly subjective based on what your goal is in going there. If you want the warmest, sunniest weather to explore quaint coastal towns and cities on the northern Atlantic seaboard, July and August are your best bets.

But many travelers head to this region specifically to see the dazzling fall foliage, in which case the best time to visit is October. September can be a good middle ground, because crowds will thin out (as school is back in session) but the weather will still be warm. There’s also a chance to see the start of the leaves changing towards the end of the month, though it varies from year-to-year and is never guaranteed.

Australia/New Zealand

Cruises sail Down Under year-round, and there is no cut-and-dry answer as to when the best season is to sail. Different parts of the region experience different weather in relation to the seasons, and it comes down to what’s most important to you.

For sunny skies and hot days in many parts of the continent where cruise ships sail, take a cruise during the austral summer. Since the seasons are flipped for the northern and southern hemispheres, that means during our winter season, from around December through March.

Legendary Voyages Highlight Holland America's 2024-2045 Australia and South Pacific Season

Waiting until at least February or March is a good idea for avoiding crowds, as Australian and New Zealander kids’ summer break generally runs from mid-December through January. For a voyage in northern Australia, consider March or later, as the cyclone season runs through February.

Hawaii

Like many other regions, there isn’t really a “bad” time to visit Hawaii. Certain times of year are preferable than others based on one factor, but another time of year will be more desirable based on another factor.

If you want more mild weather that isn’t in the rainy season, consider April to May or September to October. For the least chance of a rain shower (but the hottest temperatures), take a cruise to Hawaii in June, July, or August. For the best prices, look into voyages that sail in November and early December.

Are you looking to cruise without a passport? For U.S. citizens, passports are not required for all cruises. While we do recommend having a passport just in case, these are the top cruise destinations you can visit without one.

Can you cruise without a passport?

Yes, you can cruise without a passport (in certain situations). For U.S. citizens, a passport is not required for closed loop cruises. A closed loop cruise is a cruise that begins and ends in the same U.S. port.

For a closed loop cruise, a birth certificate and a government issued ID are the only forms of documentation required. The birth certificate must be the original or a certified copy with the raised seal. A photocopy will not be permitted.

Keep in mind that these requirements are for U.S. citizens only. For all other nationalities, a passport is generally required to cruise.

things you should never do on a cruise

Of course, if you are traveling internationally, U.S. citizens will need a passport. A passport is required for all international flights and for any cruise that embarks or disembarks in a foreign country.

Further, passports are also required for cruises that begin and end in different locations (open loop cruises).

Where Can I Cruise Without a Passport?

You can cruise without a passport to the Caribbean

The Caribbean is one of the most popular cruise destinations, and the good news is that you can cruise the Caribbean without a passport. Many of the newest mega-ships from contemporary cruise lines visit popular islands in the Caribbean region. There are also several U.S. departure points for Caribbean cruises.

The Caribbean offers that picturesque tropical vacation of which you are dreaming. With itineraries generally divided into Eastern Caribbean, Western Caribbean, and Southern Caribbean routes, you will have plenty of choices when it comes to a Caribbean cruise.

Which islands are visited does vary slightly by the cruise ship and cruise line. However, all islands offer a variety of popular activities like beach breaks, island tours, snorkeling, and historic and cultural tours. There will also be adventure activities like zip lining and off-road tours at most ports of call.

Caribbean Cruise Planning Guide

Again, do keep in mind if you decide to cruise without a passport, you might not be able to get off the ship in certain locations. For example, the Caribbean island of Martinique requires that all cruise passengers have a valid passport to go ashore.

You can cruise to the Bahamas without a passport

The Bahamas is another popular cruise destination that you can visit without a passport. Normally, these cruises depart from the East Coast of the United States, primarily from Florida homeports. If you are looking for a shorter duration cruise or just a quick getaway, then a Bahamas cruise is definitely for you.

While you are probably familiar with Nassau, Bahamas, this region is also home to many cruise line private destinations. These private islands offer exclusive access for passengers sailing with the cruise line. These islands usually offer included food, beach access with loungers, and other amenities.

Perfect Day at CocoCay

For instance, MSC Cruises has a brand new Bahamian paradise at Ocean Cay Marine Reserve. Virgin Voyages has its new Beach Club at Bimini. Additionally, who could forget Royal Caribbean’s Perfect Day at CocoCay. There is also Norwegian Cruise Line’s Great Stirrup Cay, Disney Cruise Line’s Castaway Cay, Carnival Cruise Line’s Half Moon Cay, and Princess Cays.

You can cruise without a passport from Seattle to Alaska

For many, the seasonal cruise destination of Alaska is high on their bucket lists. An Alaskan cruise even lures those who wouldn’t necessarily consider a cruise. These vacations are more about the destination than the cruise ship. Cruises to Alaska appeal to nature lovers, photographers, and explorers. On an Alaskan cruise, you can set off in search of glacial vistas, wildlife encounters, and some of the freshest seafood.

Most major cruise lines offer sailings in this region. The most popular U.S. embarkation port for Alaska cruises is Seattle. Though, there are also roundtrip cruises from Vancouver and one-way itineraries.

These itineraries usually include port stops in JuneauKetchikan, and Skagway, Alaska. These itineraries can visit Victoria and Vancouver, British Columbia as well. These ports of call offer a variety of shore excursion options from helicopter rides over glaciers, to whale watching, bear sightings, salmon bakes, and historic gold route tours.

Top Things to Do in Ketchikan Alaska

Keep in mind that even though you are not required to have a passport to cruise to Alaska, some excursions like the White Pass Railway in Skagway may require a passport.

Do you need a passport for Hawaii?

The accessibility of the Hawaiian islands makes it a popular cruise destination especially for those looking to stay within the United States.

Most Hawaiian cruises depart from the island of Oahu, visiting the Big Island and Maui. Some cruises also visit the island of Kauai. With attractions like Pearl Harbor, Waikiki Beach, and a selection of luaus, Oahu definitely requires a couple days to explore either pre-cruise or post cruise.

The Big Island‘s landscape is very diverse with volcanoes, mountainous terrain, beaches, rainforests, and everything in between. One of our favorite excursions was a helicopter ride over the island.

An over-night visit to the island of Maui is common on a Hawaiian cruise as well. Some of Maui’s most popular attractions include the Road to Hana and Haleakala Crater.

cruise without a passport

Several cruise lines normally have ships making stops in the region. As the only ship sailing in Hawaii year-round, NCL’s Pride of America is an easy choice. This Americana-themed ship usually sails a 7-night round-trip itinerary from Honolulu offering a comprehensive Polynesian experience.

You can cruise without a passport to Bermuda

If you are looking to cruise without a passport, Bermuda is another popular choice. This British territory is home to some of the friendliest people and arguably the best beaches and natural landscapes in the Atlantic.

Given that the island is further north than many of the other popular tropical destinations, the weather is a bit more seasonal here. Therefore, cruises to Bermuda generally occur from April to October. Still, that is almost half of the year to find some vacation time to enjoy all that Bermuda has to offer.

Best Things to Do in Bermuda on a Cruise

Many of the major cruise lines usually have ships that visit Bermuda. Most even offer two or three day stays to enjoy this beautiful location. You can use this time to explore Kings Wharf and other popular stops like St. George’s and Hamilton.

A Bermuda cruise might be the perfect choice for those living in the Northeastern United States as there will be no flying involved. Most Bermuda cruises leave from New York or Cape Liberty, New Jersey. A few also depart from Boston, MA, Baltimore, MD, and occasionally some southern ports like Florida.

You can go on a Mexican Riviera cruise without a passport

For those living on the West Coast, the Mexican Riviera might be the perfect destination to which to cruise without a passport.

Ports in the Mexican Riviera, like Cabo San Lucas and Puerto Vallarta, offer amazing beaches, immersive cultural and historical experiences, and a festive atmosphere day and night. The Mexican Riviera is much like the Caribbean for West Coasters.

Like many of the tropical cruise regions, there are plenty of beach breaks, island tours, food tastings, and nature excursions to experience in the Mexican Riviera. Plus, there are exclusive offerings like whale watching, cultural shows like Rhythms of the Night, and some unique landscapes that you can’t find in the Caribbean.

cruise without a passport

Mexican Riviera cruises most often depart from California homeports from brands including Carnival Cruise Line, Princess Cruises, and Norwegian Cruise Line. Royal Caribbean’s Navigator of the Seas also sails this region.

Do you need a passport to cruise Canada and New England?

Last but not least, you can also cruise without a passport to Canada and New England. Canada/New England cruise itineraries are seasonal, running from May to October with the majority of sailings occurring during the Fall.

As native New Englanders, we sometimes take the fall foliage for granted. However, this seasonal change is a sight to behold for many.

Popular ports of call include Boston, MA; Bar Harbor, ME; Portland, ME; Halifax, Nova Scotia; and St. John, New Brunswick. Each of these ports offers its own historic and coastal charm.

In our homeport of Boston, you can learn more about the founding of the United States by trekking the Boston Freedom Trail. You can dive into the history of the Titanic when in Halifax. Or, you can see the Victorian era architecture and historic homes of Portland and visit Arcadia National Park in Bar Harbor.

Our local cuisine is another great reason to cruise to Canada and New England. Portland is home to the one and only Maine Lobster, but the waters off these coasts are home to other seafood delights as well. You can enjoy a rich and creamy cup of New England clam chowder or some Rhode Island style calamari. There are also plenty of sweet treats including maple syrup, whoopie pies, and Ben and Jerry’s ice cream from nearby Vermont.

Like Bermuda cruises, popular embarkation ports for Canada/New England cruises are in the Northeast. New York, Cape Liberty (NJ), Baltimore, and Boston are the most popular.

During our Celebrity Edge cruise, on the first sailing back in the U.S., we visited Cozumel. At the time, Celebrity Cruises’ protocols required all cruisers to book a shore excursion with the cruise line if they wanted to head ashore. Luckily, we were able to book the Jeep Adventure to Punta Sur National Park and had a fabulous time. Now, we detail everything about this tour in our latest shore excursion review.

Jeep Adventure to Punta Sur National Park in Cozumel

Getting the Day Started

This Jeep Adventure to Punta Sur National Park excursion was advertised as 5 hours in duration; though, it ran closer to 6 hours. The tour company contracted through the cruise line for this excursion was Explora Tours.

Jeep Adventure to Punta Sur National Park

Upon disembarking the ship in Cozumel, we met our guides, Willy and Kike, at the end of the pier. Here, we checked in and were asked if we wanted an automatic or manual transmission Jeep. Automatic for us please!

Actually, all the the vehicles were relatively new and most were automatic anyway. Due to social distancing measures, each travel party got their own Jeep. Score!

Soon after, we were escorted to the Jeep caravan and assigned a vehicle. We had a few minutes to get comfortable before we set off on our drive to Punta Sur.

Punta Sur is the largest ecological park in Cozumel with a variety of flora, fauna, and lagoon systems. During a visit to Punta Sur, you can climb a lighthouse, visit a small Mayan ruin, snorkel a protected reef, relax on the beach, or even spot some crocodiles lurking in the lagoons.

Jeep Adventure to Punta Sur National Park

The drive from the cruise terminal to the National Park is about 45 minutes. It includes some highway driving and just enough “off-road” terrain around the park to warrant using a Jeep.

Our first stop on the tour was a beach club. Here, we had some time to relax on the beach or participate in an optional guided snorkel of the ecological reserve. Each party received an umbrella and loungers free of charge.

While the weather was kind of gray and overcast, I opted to stay on the beach while the hubby headed out for some snorkeling.

Jeep Adventure to Punta Sur National Park

Prior to the snorkel adventure, the waitstaff made the rounds taking food and drink orders. This way, the food would be ready once the group returned.

The small onsite restaurant at the private beach club has a large menu with Mexican favorites like nachos, tacos, and margaritas. While the food wasn’t part of the cost of the excursion, the prices were reasonable.

Given the weather, the water was rather choppy. So, some who were not strong swimmers returned from snorkeling early. Unfortunately, hubby indicated that he did not see much marine life during the tour anyway.

We had about 2 hours in total at this first stop. This meant that there was just enough time to enjoy some food and drinks once the snorkelers returned.

Then, we made our way back to the Jeeps to continue our adventure. Our next stop was the Celarain lighthouse, where we had about a half hour to explore.

If you choose to climb the 130+ steps of the Celarain Lighthouse (Faro de Celarain), the reward is amazing panoramic views of the the area. The base of the lighthouse is also home to the Museum of Navigation and a small tequila tasting venue, which are both complimentary with the tour. Or, you can browse the few shops on site or roam the surrounding grounds.

Our last stop of the day was El Caracol, a small Mayan temple built during the post-classical period. While this is just a small ruin in comparison to more famous sites like Chichen Itza, you should not overlook it. Many believe this functioned as a weather alarm, producing a whistle when winds funneled through this structure, but this is just a myth.

Very nearby this Mayan ruin site is a crocodile lookout point. A boardwalk over the Colombia Lagoon is a great spot to view the mangroves and the creatures of this habitat. There is also an observation tower for a more aerial perspective.

Recap of Our Jeep Adventure to Punta Sur National Park Review

Given the great condition of the vehicles paired with just the right amount of time during each of our stops, we really enjoyed this excursion. Often times, tours can feel rushed, but that was not the case with this Jeep Adventure to Punta Sur National Park. It was well-organized, and our guides were very friendly and knowledgeable.

The company offers both automatic and manual transmission Jeeps to allow all guests a chance to drive the vehicles. Guests must be at least 21 years old and must present a valid driver’s license to drive.

During our visit, we had our own Jeep. However, in more normal times, you will likely share a vehicle with others on the tour.

Jeep Adventure to Punta Sur National Park

This Jeep Adventure to Punta Sur National Park is a great cruise excursion, as it affords a variety of experiences in a short amount of time. You can learn a bit about Mayan history and culture, get great panoramic views of the island, swim and snorkel, enjoy a beach and some Mexican food and drinks, and even see some wildlife in its natural habitat.

If your are heading to Cozumel on your own, we would certainly recommend booking with Explora Tours. If you are traveling via cruise ship, the company does recommend booking directly with your cruise line due to time constraints.

Either way, a Jeep Adventure to Punta Sur National Park should be high on your list of things to do the next time you visit Cozumel.

You might be surprised as to how many regions of the world have tropical climates, which are defined as high year-round temperatures and wet/dry seasons. The tropics are officially located between the Tropic of Cancer and the Tropic of Capricorn. The tropics include the Equator and parts of North America, South America, Africa, Asia, and Australia. Thus, if you are looking for the perfect beach escape, look no further than one of our top tropical cruise destinations.

Top Tropical Cruise Destinations

Caribbean

The Caribbean is one of the most popular tropical cruise vacations. Nearly 35% of all cruises sail the Caribbean.

The Caribbean offers that picturesque tropical vacation of which you are dreaming. Sprawling beaches, turquoise waters, rainforests, and umbrella drinks all await you. Which islands you visit does vary slightly by the ship and cruise line.

Best Tropical Cruise Vacations

However, all Caribbean islands offer a variety of popular activities like beach breaks, island tours, snorkeling, and historic and cultural tours. There will also be adventure activities like zip lining and off-road tours at most ports of call.

Itineraries in this region are generally divided into Eastern Caribbean, Western Caribbean, and Southern Caribbean routes. These itineraries can range from 4 or 5 days to traditional 7-day cruises.

Longer itineraries also exist including 9 or 11 days to even 14 days or more!

You won’t have a problem finding a tropical cruise to the Caribbean, as cruises to the Caribbean are offered year-round. There are also a variety of ships from all brands at various price points. In fact, many of the newest ships from the major cruise lines visit popular islands in the Caribbean region.

Some of the more common stops include Jamaica; St. Thomas; St. Maarten; Tortola, BVI; San Juan, Puerto Rico; Aruba; Cozumel and Costa Maya, Mexico; and more.

Mexico

Another region that is a top tropical cruise destination is Mexico. While Western Caribbean itineraries often include visits to Cozumel and Costa Maya, Mexico, there are many other great locales in the Mexican Riviera.

More cruise lines are beginning to shift some of their latest and greatest ships to the West Coast to offer cruises in this region.

Exclusive Savings on Cruises to Mexico

Ports in the Mexican Riviera, like Cabo San LucasPuerto Vallarta, Mazatlan, and Acapulco offer amazing beaches, immersive cultural and historical experiences, and a festive atmosphere day and night.

Best Tropical Cruise Vacations

The Mexican Riviera is much like the Caribbean for West Coasters.

Like many of the tropical cruise regions, there are plenty of beach breaks, island tours, food tastings, and nature excursions to experience in the Mexican Riviera. Plus, there are exclusive offerings like whale watching, cultural shows like Rhythms of the Night, and some unique landscapes that you can’t find in the Caribbean.

While there are less ships sailing this region than the Caribbean, you will still have options from popular brands like Carnival Cruise Line, Norwegian Cruise Line, and Princess Cruises.

Hawaii

The accessibility to the Hawaiian islands makes it another popular tropical cruise vacation.

The Big Island of Hawaii is very diverse. Its landscape ranges from volcanoes, mountainous terrain, beaches, rainforests, and everything in between.

A Hawaiian cruise itinerary is likely to include a stop at Hilo which is on the east side of the island as well as Kailua-Kona on the west coast of the island. One of our favorite excursions was a helicopter ride over the island to marvel at the volcanoes, lush landscapes, and rugged coastline.

Further, an over-night visit to the island of Maui is common on a Hawaiian cruise. Some of Maui’s most popular attractions include the Road to Hana and Haleakala Crater.

Several cruise lines have ships making stops in the region. As the only ship sailing in Hawaii year-round, NCL’s Pride of America is an easy choice. This Americana-themed ship sails a 7-night round-trip itinerary from Honolulu offering a comprehensive Polynesian experience. So, why not start planning your 2022 trip now?

Bahamas

Another top tropical cruise vacation, especially for cruises of shorter duration, is the Bahamas. Normally, these cruises depart from the East Coast of the United States. In fact, a majority of these cruises leave from Florida.

While you are probably familiar with Nassau, Bahamas, this region is also home to many cruise line private destinations.

These private islands offer exclusive access for passengers sailing with the cruise line. These islands usually offer included food, beach access with loungers, and other amenities. These destinations have come a long way over the years.

MSC Cruises just debuted its brand new Bahamian paradise at Ocean Cay Marine Reserve, and Virgin Voyages is set to debut its brand new Beach Club at Bimini.

Norwegian Cruise Line has recently updated its private island in the Bahamas, Great Stirrup Cay, as well. Then, who could forget Royal Caribbean’s Perfect Day at CocoCay, featuring the tallest waterslide in North America, a large lagoon style pool, and an exclusive beach club.

There is also Disney Cruise Line’s Castaway Cay, Carnival Cruise Line’s Half Moon Cay, and Princess Cays offering the perfect beach escapes.

Besides luxurious beach days, these South Pacific islands offer other popular activities as well. Cruisers can explore the area on volcano hikes, snorkel excursions, 4×4 adventures, and so much more.

Of course, you will also want to experience the history, culture, and cuisine while visiting this tropical locale.

Panama Canal cruises are usually one-way trips from East Coast to West Coast (or vice versa), though they can be round-trip sailings as well. So, we suggest you do a bit of research on ports of call before choosing your itinerary.

The length of these itineraries can also vary greatly. From short 2, 3, and 4 day getaways, to typical 7 day cruises, to longer 12-17 day routes, and even select 28-32 day itineraries.

The Mexican Riviera is home to some of the most beautiful locations in all of Mexico. A popular stop on this cruise itinerary is Puerto Vallarta. Recently, we had the pleasure of cruising this region on the brand new Carnival Panorama. If you have an upcoming cruise with a late day stop in Puerto Vallarta, we highly suggest you book the Rhythms of the Night Shore Excursion. See why this is one of the most popular tours in our 6 Reasons to Book the Rhythms of the Night Shore Excursion.

Rhythms of the Night Shore Excursion

6 Reasons to Book the Rhythms of the Night Shore Excursion

Entertaining and Lively Boat Ride

The experience begins with an approximately 45-minute boat ride from the cruise port across Banderas Bay to the show’s location, Las Caletas. From the start, this experience is well organized with friendly and attentive staff.

Once the boat sets sail, get ready for a fun and energetic party. If you opt to upgrade your experience with the all-inclusive drinks, you will have a selection of pre-mixed cocktails, beer, or a few basic liquors to enjoy during the trip. Even if you pass on the booze, the boat ride is filled with music, some fun facts, and plenty of photo worthy views.

Rhythms of the Night Shore Excursion

On the return trip home, the party doesn’t stop. Along with keeping the bar flowing, the crew puts on a high-energy, humorous “musical” review.  Yes, this show contains some bad lip syncing and mismatched outfits, but it provides loads of laughs. These antics are the perfect end to a fun-filled evening.

Beautiful Grounds

Once you arrive at Las Caletas, you have some time to tour the grounds. With a well-manicured beach and hammocks, you could relax and enjoy the waterfront views prior to dinner. Or, in between the meal and show, you can take a peek around this natural setting.

Rhythms of the Night Shore Excursion

If this looks like your ideal resort, you will want to plan a return trip. This secluded  beachfront property is home to an all-inclusive beach break during the day.

Only accessible via boat, the mountain backdrops and tranquil jungle-like atmosphere of this private oasis set the scene for an unforgettable evening.  This remote location is the perfect spot for a night time shore excursion. Even better, our ship had the entire property to ourselves during the excursion.

Rhythms of the Night Shore Excursion

Exquisite Food

Rhythms of the Night is dinner show. Unlike some similar combo tours, the food itself is well worth the visit. It is a dinner buffet, but it contains a wide variety of freshly made entrees. There were several meat, chicken, and seafood offerings, in addition to salad and light desserts. I particularly liked the shrimp and calamari saute that had just the right amount of spice. It was fresh, hot, and mixed well with some rice.

Rhythms of the Night Shore Excursion

There are several dining areas located on the grounds offering bay front views while you dine. The all-inclusive drink pass also works at the resort, so you can enjoy a limited selection of beer, wine, and mixed drinks along with the meal. While the food was delicious, you do not have too much time to savor the flavor. So, we suggest grabbing a bite to eat as soon as you arrive, then exploring the grounds before the show.

Rhythms of the Night Shore Excursion

Captivating Show

All we have to say is , WOW! This show certainly exceeded our expectations. A wonderfully vibrant mixture of music, humor, costumes, and impressive acrobatics, Rhythms of the Night Savia was certainly a feast for the eyes. The production quality, performers, and outdoor amphitheater setting were first rate and certainly rivaled any modern Cirque-style show.

Savia unfolds several different scenes featuring an array of performers. These include strength acts, fire twirlers and dancers, acrobatics, and more. It was a non-stop, action packed hour, filled with emotion and mysticism.

Rhythms of the Night Shore Excursion

Based on the Aztec’s creation legend, the show journeys to the ancient civilizations that have preceded the modern human race. As each of these cultures emerge, the persistence of the human spirit is on full display. The show leaves viewers optimistic about the future of mankind.

Savia was created, written, and directed by the co-creator of Cirque du Soleil, Gilles Ste-Croix. We were not aware of this at the time, but following the hour long show, we could certainly see similarities in the style of storytelling.

Rhythms of the Night Shore Excursion

Perfect for Families or Couples

The show is advertised for children ages 6 and above. There were plenty of families on our shore excursion, and they all seemed to be having a good time. The material is family friendly and still appeals to adults in the audience.

Rhythms of the Night Shore Excursion

For couples, the intimate location provides a romantic backdrop for a magical night out, starting with the sunset cruise over to Las Caletas. Upon arrival, you will notice that the pathways are lit with candles and tiki torches. Further, we were sat at a table for two and serenaded with music during our gourmet dinner. This dinner and a show performance is certainly a date night to remember.

Rhythms of the Night Shore Excursion

Ease and Convenience

On the Rhythms of the Night shore excursion, everything is arranged through the cruse line. We were able to book our ticket pre-cruise and didn’t have to worry about anything else after that. Our tour met onboard the ship, and we were escorted to our boat a short walk away for the ferry ride over to the beach.

There is no need to worry about missing the ferry to Las Caletas or missing the ship on the way back. The entire group is guided by the Vallarta Adventures crew throughout the evening. While at the beach club, there were plenty of support staff assisting with directions to the show arena, bathrooms, bar, etc.

Rhythms of the Night Shore Excursion

On the return ride back to our ship, we docked right alongside the vessel and were among the last cruisers to return. We were never concerned that Carnival Panorama was going to leave without us as everything was booked directly with the cruise line.

Mazatlan is a popular stop on Mexican Riviera cruises. With a historic district, the Golden Zone with its resorts and beaches, and some daring cliff divers, there are many things to do in Mazatlan on a cruise. For our first visit to the port, we opted for a cruise sponsored shore excursion that included many of the area’s popular attractions. We are back and share our experiences in this Best of Mazatlan shore excursion review.

Best of Mazatlan Shore Excursion Review

We booked the Best of Mazatlan shore excursion through Carnival Cruise Line before setting sail on our trip. This tour gave us the opportunity to explore several parts of the city by land and by sea, as well as experience many of the port’s highlights.

Per our tickets, we met in the dining room onboard the ship for 8:30 am. Within a few minutes, our tour was called and we were escorted off the ship to meet our guides. The large group was divided among several buses that would all be completing the same tour with the local company Tropical Tours Mazatlan.

Best of Mazatlan Shore Excursion Review

After a brief overview of the day’s itinerary, we took a very short drive from the cruise port to a nearby dock for the first part of our tour, the harbor cruise.

Off on a Harbor Cruise

The harbor cruise portion of our tour lasted about 90 minutes. It look place on an open air boat that gave us beautiful views of our ship and the surrounding landscape. The harbor cruise took us by several notable landmarks while our guide provided some history and folklore surrounding the different attractions.

We set sight on some of the neighboring islands off in the distance like Stone Island. We also saw Brothers Islands which have acquired their white color from the numerous birds that flock to the area. The harbor cruise passed several caves as well with some questionable pirate history.

Best of Mazatlan Shore Excursion Review

We even encountered a happy family of sea lions that make there way down south for the winter.

Perhaps the most omnipresent landmark on the tour was the El Faro Lighthouse. The tallest natural lighthouse in the world, this still functioning lighthouse offers amazing views for those willing to hike up to its summit at 515 feet above sea level. We were fine grabbing a few pictures from sea level.

El Faro Lighthouse

Throughout the tour, the guides were providing beverages, which of course I could not refuse. They also had a staff member taking photos which could be downloaded from the company’s Facebook page for no additional cost.

Eventually returning to our starting point, we had enough time for a short restroom stop before boarding our bus to begin the city tour of Mazatlan.

Not Much to See in Downtown

Back on the bus, we began our land portion of the tour. First, we ascended to “lookout hill”. Here, we could see the harbor with the cruise ships and some remnants of the old fortification, which is now home to condos.

View from Lookout Hill in Mazatlan

We then headed towards the oldest part of the city. As our guide explained, much of the area was in disarray as many individuals left in the 1980’s to head to the “Golden Zone”. In fact, parts were abandoned completely, but once the economy went south, some families tried to return.

Now, much of the downtown area has been protected in an attempt to preserve and revitalize. Still, much of the area looked impoverished to us.

The two highlights that our guide pointed out along the way were the flower market and shrimp market. Mazatlan remains one of Mexico’s major Pacific ports exporting millions of pounds of shrimp every year.

Time for Some Excitement

Leaving the center of town, we headed towards the coast. Here, there are several statues along the seaside pathway that reminded us of the Malecon in Puerto Vallarta.

No Best of Mazatlan shore excursion would be complete without a stop at the small oceanside park to watch the famous cliff divers. These daredevils risk life and limb to amaze audiences as they jump from a 50-foot platform into less than 6 feet of water below.

Top Things to Do in Mazatlan, Mexico on a Cruise

Timing is everything! These divers need to be precise to time the jump with the incoming waves. We arrived just as one diver was about to complete the ritualistic jump. Then, there was a second diver that performed just for our tour group.

We watched for about 15 minutes, scoring some videos and photos, before hopping back on the bus to head to our next stop.

About 15 minutes away, the bus stopped in the “newer” section of historic downtown, which was a short walk to the Immaculate Conception Cathedral. Also located in Republic Square is the city’s government building.

Our guide gave us a quick 5 minute overview of the history of the area and the church. Then, we had 30 minutes to explore on our own. We took a few photos and stretched our legs for a bit. We also took a peek inside the church, but there was a service taking place at the time. With our tour group all back on the bus, we were off to our last stop of the day, the Golden Zone.

Mazatlan Cathederal

To the Golden Zone

Retracing some of the path we took a little over an hour ago, we made our way to the “Golden Zone”. This is the major tourist area in Mazatlan. The modern resort area is filled with hotels, shops, restaurants, and the beach. We had 75 minutes of free time to explore on our own.

I couldn’t go to a new port without a t-shirt or an ornament for our holiday tree, so a little souvenir shopping was first on our list.

Even though it took longer than expected to find these items, we still had time to grab a bite to eat. Yes, typically we do skip food stops on these tours, but I had to try some local shrimp while in Mazatlan. Based on the recommendation from our tour guide, we stopped at a small restaurant next to our meeting spot.

The Princess opted for some chips and salsa, while I enjoyed an order of shrimp sauteed in garlic and olive oil. It was fresh and delicious. Of course, we ordered some margaritas to go along with the food. I’m happy that we were able to sneak in this meal. It was the perfect capstone to the day in this new port of call.

Recap of the Best of Mazatlan Shore Excursion

Our tour guide was a wealth of information, but he continued answering questions and dispensing knowledge about the history and culture of his hometown along the 30 minute drive back to the cruise port.

Upon being dropped off, we snaked our way through the maze of shops and bars to catch the short tram back to the ship. As this is a commercial shipping port, guests are not allowed to walk back to the cruise ships on their own.

Overall, it was a successful day getting to learn more about Mazatlan and seeing the major highlights. If you have never visited this port of call, then the Best of Mazatlan shore excursion is a lovely introduction. We now have a better idea of the layout of the city and can decide what other tours and experiences to book the next time.

While this was our first visit to Mazatlan, we know it will not be our last.

Vigia (”lookout”) Hill is another popular stop to take in the stunning panoramic views of the coastline.

Book a Harbor Cruise

You can take in some of the area’s history, landmarks, and sweeping coastline from a new perspective on a harbor cruise. Take a Day Trip to Stone Island

Stone Island is well known for its sandy beaches and calm waters. Therefore, it is a popular day tour from Mazatlan for cruise passengers. At this family friendly location, you can swim, snorkel, partake in some water sports, or simply just relax on the 12 miles of beautiful beach. There are also several beachfront restaurants, bars, and a lively vibe to enjoy. Stone Island is best reached by boat with several catamaran tours and water taxis available for transport.

Venture Over to Deer Island

If you are looking for a day trip from Mazatlan that is a bit less touristy, you can set sail for Deer Island. Deer Island is part of a protected natural reserve in the Sea of Cortez. Here, you can certainly relax on the unspoiled beach or perhaps do some snorkeling or hiking. Your visit to Mazatlan would not be complete without stopping to watch the cliff divers at the small oceanside park on the Malecon. This tradition in Mazatlan dates back to the mid 1900’s when the platform was originally constructed. These daring performers dive from a 50-foot platform into less than 6 feet of water. The cliff divers need to be precise to time their high-diving feats with the incoming waves as they plunge into the rocky surf below. There is no fee to watch the divers, but they do encourage tipping.

Take a Brewery Tour

Cerveceria Tres Islas was the first microbrewery in Mazatlan specializing in a variety of beers that blend local and international flavors. At this brewery, you can tour the facilities, gain some history about the brand, and learn about the brewing process. Of course, the tour also includes a tasting. Cerveceria Navegante Craft Brewery is a recent addition to Mazatlan which serves up pale ale, stout, IPA, and golden ale. Why not tour both facilities so you can compare the production methods and the products. If beer is not your thing, you can also tour the Los Osuna tequila distillery. This distillery in located on the oldest and only surviving agave plantation in the area.

Soar on the Huana Coa Canopy Adventure

If you are looking for fast-paced adventure during your visit to Mazatlan, head to the foothills of the Sierra Madre Mountains for some high-flying feats. The Huana Coa Canopy adventure includes a series of 9 zip lines nestled within the Los Osuna plantation, the same plantation where blue agave is grown and processed into tequila. This unique canopy perspective affords amazing views of nature throughout the adrenaline-filled course. Following the adventure course, you can set off on a nature trek along the Blue Agave trail. Many tours couple this excursion with a visit to the tequila distillery as well.

This weekend, Virgin Voyages released shore excursion bookings for cruisers on its first sailings. Now, individuals with booked cruises can call the cruise line to reserve these different tour offerings. Currently, shore things for Virgin Voyages are available for stops in Key West, FL, Cozumel and Costa Maya, Mexico, and the cruise line’s private resort at Bimini, Bahamas. Shore Things for Puerto Plata and San Juan will be featured soon. As the Princess and I are booked on the inaugural cruise on April 1st, we were able to get a sneak peek at all these experiences. Of course, we wanted to share our first impressions with you in this exclusive first look at the Virgin Voyages Shore Excursions.

Exclusive First Look at Virgin Voyages Shore Excursions

Our First Impressions of the Offerings

Reviewing the different Shore Things, there are certainly similarities with popular tours offered by other cruise lines. For example, activities like Jeep tours, ATVs, and snorkeling adventures visiting popular sites like the Mayan ruins and nature reserves.

However, Virgin Voyages appears to also offer more unique tours focused on the destinations and cultural enrichment. For instance, there are a variety of tours to historic locales and food and drink classes and demonstrations. While we have yet to experience these tours, the descriptions indicate greater attention to detail and a local’s perspective. At first glance, these excursions seem to be somewhat less touristy and more immersive than other cruise lines.

There also seems to be an emphasis on nature and eco-friendly activities like kayaking tours, snorkeling, and interacting with marine life in their natural habitats.

From a pricing standpoint, we are pleasantly surprised that tours are all moderately priced. Compared to other cruise lines, Virgin Voyages Shore Things seem to be less expensive. Many of the cruise line’s shore excursion are priced at or below $100 a person.

The only disappointing thing is the inability to book the tours on the website. Currently, cruisers booked on Virgin Voyages need to call a toll-free number to book these experiences. Plus, you can not browse the available offerings to see start times, etc.

Shore Excursions for Beach Club at Bimini

In total, there are 10 shore excursion offerings to book at this private resort. These range in price from $15 to $350.

The cruise line’s private destination in the Bahamas is home to your typical beach club options. There are a few different cabana options available to rent, currently priced at $350 for up to 6 guests. We were informed that cruisers have the cabanas for the entire day, even when the ship is docked late into the night!

Beach Club at Bimini Cabanas

In addition, cruisers can book cultural and historic tours of Bimini, including a hop-on, hop-off bus tour. Meanwhile, all cruisers do have the option to leave and return to the Beach Club at Bimini at their leisure even without booking a shore excursion.

Cabo San Lucas is a resort city on the southern tip of Mexico’s Baja peninsula, making it a popular port of call on Mexican Riviera cruises. From beach breaks, to famous landmarks, and one of a kind experiences with nature, cruisers will find plenty to enjoy during their time ashore. If you are planning your visit to this popular spot in the Mexican Riviera, we have put together our list of the Top Things to Do in Cabo San Lucas on a Cruise.

Top Things to Do in Cabo San Lucas on a Cruise

Visit Los Arcos

Perhaps the most famous landmark in Cabo San Lucas is Los Arcos, or the Arch. This massive rock formation is located at Land’s End, where the Pacific Ocean and Sea of Cortez meet. This dramatic arch at the very tip of the longest peninsula in the world was slowly carved out over time by the ocean currents. Nearby this landmark is a sea lion colony and Lover’s Beach.

There are several tours that will take you to this famous attraction including catamaran tours, glass bottom boat tours, and water taxis. Many of these excursions will couple visits to Los Arcos with other popular activities like whale watching, beach breaks, or snorkeling.

Make it a Beach Day

If you are in the area, you might as well spend some time on Lover’s Beach. This beach is located on the Sea of Cortez side at Land’s End. This small yet picturesque beach is only accessible by boat. Lover’s Beach has calm waters which make for great swimming and snorkeling. While Divorce Beach, juxtaposed on the Pacific Ocean side, is very turbulent and dangerous.

Medano Beach is another popular beach and is the main swimming area in Cabo along the east side of the harbor. Here, you will find many restaurants, bars, and street vendors. There are also watersport rentals like jet skis, kayaking, and more. Medano Beach is certainly the place to go if you are looking for that lively, party vibe.

Enjoy Some Bar Hopping

Speaking of party vibes, maybe your idea of vacation is just relaxing and enjoying some drinks. Cabo San Lucas has plenty of popular bars for you to do just that. Mango Deck is located on Medano Beach and is your beach party scene with plenty of food and drinks. The Office is another cruiser favorite on Medano Beach. This “office” on the beach serves up great food and drinks while you enjoy some fun in the sun. Finally, Sammy Hagar’s Cabo Wabo Cantina is another great stop on your Cabo bar hop. Here, you’ll find some great margaritas, snacks, and rock and roll memorabilia. The best part is that this bar is located within walking distance from the cruise pier.

Set off on a Whale Watch

Depending what time of year you visit Cabo San Lucas, a whale watching tour can be a very popular excursion. If this is something you want to do, we highly recommend booking a small boat tour.

A small, inflatable speed boat is the perfect vessel to get you up close and personal with these creatures. These tours will cruise through the Sea of Cortez and Pacific Ocean, where you will be able to learn, listen, and observe these sea mammals in their natural habitat. These waters see numerous humpback, gray, blue, and sperm whales each year. Have your cameras ready to capture the whales swimming and breaching from this perfect sea-level vantage point. Of course, if you are not up for this small boat experience, larger catamarans also offer whale watching excursions.

Top Things to Do in Puerto Vallarta, Mexico on a Cruise

Take a Camel Adventure

While in Cabo San Lucas, perhaps you’d prefer to partake in a more exotic animal encounter, like a camel ride. That’s right, during your visit to this Mexican Riviera port of call, you can actually ride a camel. Most cruise lines offer an excursion where you can hop on these gentle creatures for a caravan across the white sands of the beach. From your perch, you will score amazing scenic views. Not to mention, amazing memories from this one of a kind experience. Most of these tours are followed by an authentic Mexican lunch to complete your fun-filled day in Cabo.

Go Snorkeling

Lastly, the Mexican Riviera is also a great place to enjoy some snorkeling. The Chileno Bay Marine Preserve in the Sea of Cortez features a large, protected coral reef that is home to several species of tropical fish and an array of other sea creatures. It is often the top pick for snorkeling in a sheltered area. Santa Maria Bay and Pelican Rock at Land’s End are other popular snorkel spots off the coast of Cabo. The crystal-clear water and the spectacular marine life provide the backdrop for a great guided snorkeling adventure. As mentioned previously, many of these snorkeling tours also sail past other popular landmarks like Lover’s Beach and the Arch, so you can capture all the highlights in one excursion.
