Jamaica has three popular cruise ports including Ocho Rios, Montego Bay, and Falmouth. If you are visiting Jamaica on a Royal Caribbean cruise, then you will likely dock in Falmouth. However, Montego Bay and Ocho Rios are popular cruise destinations for many other cruise lines. If your next cruise is transporting you to this lush island, you will want to take a look at our comprehensive guide of the Best Things to Do in Jamaica on a Cruise.

Best Things to Do in Jamaica on a Cruise

Feel the Need for Speed at Mystic Mountain

Mystic Mountain, located in Ocho Rios, is one of the most popular shore excursions. This eco-friendly attraction offers many thrilling adventures in the heart of the Jamaican rainforest. The main attractions include the Sky Explorer aerial lift, the famous Bobsled Jamaica attraction, the Ragga Ride, and a canopy zip line.

During your visit to Mystic Mountain, be sure to hop onboard the signature bobsled attraction to reenact a scene from Cool Runnings. Soar down the mountainside in your very own bobsled just like the famous Olympic team.

Best Things to Do in Jamaica on a Cruise

You can combine the bobsled with the various other attractions depending on your level of thrill-seeking for some amazing panoramic views of the rainforest and nearby Dunn’s River Falls.

Guests can make a day out of it with the Ultimate Mystic Mountain Package. Or perhaps, couple a visit to this popular location with a visit to Dunn’s River Falls itself.

Experience the Falls at the Ocho Rios Cruise Port

Dunn’s River Falls is often voted the best shore excursion in Ocho Rios. It provides an exhilarating climb up a series of waterfalls ascending over 600 feet.

As a group, you are led up the falls with an experienced guide in a human chain. With natural stone steps and some additional man-made accommodations for safety, you will feel the rush of the cool water as you make your way to the top. You will stop a few times along the way to pose under the waterfalls and dip into the natural pools.

Best Things to Do in Jamaica

Some physical strength is required to make the climb to the top, and water sneakers are recommended as the rocks can get a bit slippery. If you’d prefer, there is also a dry climb alongside the falls.

There is even the Falls Flyer, a series of seven zip lines and four bridges over the waterfall!

Konoko Falls in Ocho Rios provides another opportunity to climb some falls with less crowds. These falls are also less steep than Dunn’s River Falls so they’re easier to navigate. There is also a botanical garden and aviary on-site to explore.

Get Adventurous at Blue Hole

Blue Hole is a natural phenomenon located in the hills of Ocho Rios. Its signature “blue hole” certainly lives up to its name with stunning hues and calm, refreshing waters.

The area is fed by cascades of the Secret Falls and is the perfect spot for swimming and relaxation. If you are feeling adventurous, there is also a section for diving. Channel your inner Tarzan on the rope swing for some one-of-a-kind cliff jumping. You can also explore some underwater caves or hike the small series of waterfalls.

Best Things to Do in Jamaica

This attraction can also be combined with other activities on the White River including river tubing/rafting.

Go River Tubing

The White River in Ocho Rios is a popular spot for river tubing in Jamaica on a cruise. The journey is usually along a two to three-mile stretch on the river, including leisurely floating as well as mild rapids. You can sit back and relax in your inner tube while enjoying the scenery.

Rio Bueno is another popular location in Jamaica for river rafting. Here, your guide will navigate you through a series of rapids ranging up to class II rapids.

Rafting on the Martha Brae

Located near the Falmouth cruise port is a unique rafting adventure for those who prefer something a bit more tame. This authentic Jamaican experience is perfect for families of all ages. The rafts are pretty stable, so this excursion is perfect even for those who can’t swim.

Sit back and enjoy the ride on this 30-foot bamboo raft as you float down a 3 mile stretch of the Martha Brae River. You will take in the beautiful sights and learn about the legend of Martha Brae herself along the way. You can even take a quick dip in the water if you choose.

Best Things to Do in Jamaica on a Cruise

Take a Bob Marley Tour

For a true Bob Marley experience, board the Zion Bus for a 1.5 hour scenic drive from Ocho Rios to the mountain village Nine Mile, the birthplace of Bob Marley. Here, you can tour the very home in which the “King of Reggae” lived as a child and see his final resting place.

You will also hear stories of his life from your Rastafarian guide. The word on the street is that you should have an open mind if booking this tour!

You can also choose to visit the Bob Marley Museum in Kingston, which is closer to a two hour drive from Ocho Rios. The Museum is located in the reggae legend’s former home, and it is filled with mementos from the musician’s life.

Taste the Local Flavor

No trip to Jamaica would be complete without tasting the local flavor. You would be missing out if you didn’t experience the Jamaican jerk chicken. With a spicy rub not intended for the delicate palette, your smoky jerk chicken will pair nicely with a Red Stripe beer. Scotchies, a casual eatery with locations in Ocho Rios, Montego Bay, and Kingston, is often rated as one of the best restaurants in Jamaica.

Best Things to Do in Jamaica on a Cruise

Another popular local snack are the patties. Juici Patties and Tastee Patties both claim to serve the best flaky meat filled pastries, so you be the judge!

If none of these dishes pique your interest, you can still experience some local flavor by trying a cup of Blue Mountain coffee or some Appleton Estate Rum.

If you’re in Kingston and looking for a cooling treat, consider trying Devon House I Scream ice cream, made by local producer Scoops Unlimited. All fruits used in the ice cream is grown by Jamaican farmers, and flavors include mango, stout, guava, soursop, chocolate, coffee, rum and raisin, and more.

Explore the Green Grotto Caves

The Green Grotto Caves located near Ocho Rios are now one of Jamaica’s most popular natural attractions but have served multiple purposes over the years. They were once a hideout for slaves and a storeroom for rum barrels during WWII. Exploring the unique limestone formations, stalactites, and stalagmites of the Green Grotto Caves is certainly a fun way to spend your day in Jamaica.

Best Things to Do in Jamaica on a Cruise

This guided tour will take you through the underground passageways to the innermost cavern and grotto where you can admire the translucent waters and the striking rock formations.

Tour the Rose Hall Plantation

The greatest of Jamaican Great Houses is Rose Hall in Montego Bay, situated on a 6,600 acre plantation. Tour the house and gardens as you learn about the slaves and its infamous owner, Annie Palmer. It is said that the mistress of the plantation, Annie, “did away” with countless husbands and lovers with her black magic and witchcraft.

Many claim to see the “White Witch of Rose Hall” still roaming the property. In fact, the home was even featured on the television show Ghost Hunters International. Guided tours are available of the home during the day or night — if you dare.

Also, situated nearby is the Cinnamon Hill Great House, home of Johnny Cash.

Set Off on a City Highlights Tour

A city highlights tour is a great way to catch a glimpse of many sights in a short amount of time. This is a good shore excursion option for someone who is visiting Jamaica for the first time.

If you are a history buff, then you will love a Falmouth Heritage walking tour. Experience the history, culture, and architecture of Falmouth while visiting notable sites along the path including the Falmouth Courthouse, Baptist Manse, the Moulton Barrett House, Water Square, the William Knibb Memorial Baptist Church, St. Peter’s Anglican Church, and more.

Falmouth food tours are also available, as well as trolley tours for those who are not up for walking in the Caribbean heat.

Best Things to Do in Jamaica on a Cruise

On a Best of Ocho Rios tour, you can enjoy a scenic drive along the coast to the town of St. Ann’s Bay to view the Court House of 1866 and Statue of Christopher Columbus. You will also drive through the lush Fern Gully and possibly other sites like Shaw Park Gardens for amazing photo-ops.

Visit Good Hope Estate

The Good Hope Estate located near the Falmouth cruise port also warrants a visit while in Jamaica. This estate once belonged to John Tharpe. It was a former sugar plantation but is still one of the most elegant structures in town. These estate grounds offer panoramic vistas of the Queen of Spain Valley, the Cockpit Mountains, and the Martha Brae River. Today, the estate is still a working citrus farm and a nature adventure park offering historical, cultural, and adventurous tours.

You can tour the Great House, enjoy the 2,000+ acres of nature, or partake in an Appleton rum tasting experience. Additionally, you can test your thrill for adventure with dune buggies, ATVs, zip lines, and river tubing. Or, simply relax by the Great House pool.

Purchase an All-Inclusive Jamaica Cruise Port Day Pass

Purchasing an all-inclusive day pass to a nearby resort is a popular activity when visiting Jamaica on a cruise. Depending at which cruise port your ship is calling, you will have a variety of options.

The Hilton Rose Hall in Montego Bay offers day passes for full use of amenities. Many cruisers also recommend getting a day pass to the Royalton White Sands Resort which is located very close to the Falmouth cruise port.

Best Things to Do in Jamaica on a Cruise

If you are looking for an all-inclusive option in Ocho Rios, try the highly rated Jewel Paradise Cove all-inclusive day pass. Riu Resorts also offer day passes to locations in Montego Bay and Ocho Rios.

Spend the Day at One of the Many Beaches in Jamaica

Jamaica, like most Caribbean islands, offers many beach options as well. Of course, everyone has their own beach standards. So, be sure to do some research when choosing your beach day. Also, if you have a favorite beach in Jamaica that is not listed, let us know.

Burwood Beach and Red Stripe Beach are the closest options from the Falmouth cruise port. Burwood Beach is a public beach, while Red Stripe Beach is a private beach which has shuttle service offered by the cruise lines and amenities available for rental.

If you want to venture to Montego Bay, Doctor’s Cave, located on the “Hip Strip,” is one of the most-visited beaches in Jamaica.

Best Things to Do in Jamaica on a Cruise

Near Ocho Rios, Bamboo Beach (Reggae Beach) is another popular spot for cruisers. The Bamboo Beach Club offers plenty of sand, sun, and a lively atmosphere to enjoy a day ashore in Jamaica. Puerto Seco Beach, Turtle Beach (Ocho Rios Bay Beach), James Bond Beach, and Mahogany Beach are all within driving distance from Ocho Rios as well.

If you want to visit the longest and possibly biggest hot spot in Jamaica, you will need to head to Seven Mile Beach in Negril, which is quite a hike from any of the cruise ports though.

Horseback Riding

If you are looking for something a bit different during your visit to Jamaica, you can saddle up for a horseback ride and swim. During your scenic trail ride, you will stroll along the coast exploring historical sites as well as the flora and fauna of the area. Then, take a dip in the Caribbean Sea with your new four-legged friend.

Horseback riding can often be combined with other popular activities as a shore excursion for a fun-filled day in Jamaica.

Dolphin Cove

Finally, like most Caribbean ports of call, you can also partake in a dolphin experience during your visit to Jamaica. At Dolphin Cove Ocho Rios, you can interact and swim with these majestic animals in their natural environment. There are a variety of different dolphin excursions available as well as shark encounters.

Best Things to Do in Jamaica on a Cruise

Included with all Dolphin Cove experiences are the ability to interact with stingrays, the Jungle Trail walk, and use of the beach.

The company also operates a Dolphin Cove in Montego Bay and Yaaman Adventure Park at the former Prospect Plantation in Ocho Rios.

Tortola is the largest and most populated of the British Virgin Islands. If visiting the BVIs, your cruise ship will likely dock in Road Town, the capital of Tortola. This mountainous island, formed by volcanic activity, offers many amazing sights of its own. However, it is also a starting point for trips out to neighboring BVIs including Virgin Gorda, Jost Van Dyke, and Norman Island. If your next cruise is visiting Tortola, be sure to check out our list of best things to do in Tortola on a cruise.

Best Things to Do in Tortola on a Cruise

Visit Jost Van Dyke

Jost Van Dyke, the smallest of the four main British Virgin Islands, is a popular day trip from Tortola. It lies only five miles in the northwest direction. An approximately 30 minute ferry ride from Tortola (West End) as well as private tours are available to shuttle tourists to this island paradise. If you are looking for beautiful beaches, then a visit to Jost Van Dyke should be on the top of your list.

The ferry will drop you off in Great Harbor which is a five minute walk to the lively Foxy’s Bar. This island bar is well known for its live music and beach parties.

Best Things to Do in Tortola on a Cruise

If you want to relax on one of the top 25 beaches in the world, you should head to White Bay. While it is walkable from the ferry terminal, it is very hilly terrain, so we suggest grabbing a taxi. Some cruise sponsored shore excursions will even bring you directly here via catamaran.

At White Bay Beach, you will find soft white sand, turquoise waters, and the famous Soggy Dollar Bar. This bar is known as being the birthplace of the potent cocktail the “painkiller.”

After spending the day in Jost Van Dyke, you may never want to leave!

Explore the Baths at Virgin Gorda

Most cruisers will agree that a visit to Tortola would not be complete without exploring the Baths at Virgin Gorda. Travel to Virgin Gorda can be done via an organized shore excursion or on your own by simply taking the approximately 30 minute ferry ride to Spanish Town.

The ferry is about a 10 minute walk to the left from the cruise pier in Road Town, (Speedy’s) and offers trips over to Virgin Gorda every couple hours. Once in Spanish Town, taxis are available for a short ride to the Baths. If going on your own, be sure to coordinate the time of the return ferry trip so you don’t miss the cruise ship!

Best Things to Do in Tortola

The Baths is a natural collection of giant granite boulders, sandy beaches, and sheltered sea pools and grottos formed over time from volcanic rock. The Devil’s Bay Trail guides visitors through the boulders to Devil’s Bay, where you can enjoy some snorkeling or just relax on the beautiful beach. Water shoes are encouraged for this walk. The Baths offer lockers, refreshments, and the Top of the Baths restaurant with amazing panoramic views.

Explore the Natural Beauty of the Island

If you want to get back to nature, then head over to Sage Mountain National Park. Named for its highest point, Sage Mountain measuring in at 1,716 feet, this national park was the first established in the British Virgin Islands in 1964 to preserve the remaining forest.

This park has 12 trails forming a circular route through the forest and is mostly an easy hike, offering breathtaking views of neighboring BVIs and plenty of flora and fauna to admire including mahogany trees, elephant ear vines, and tropical birds. At the entrance of the park, there is also the Mountain View Restaurant to refuel after a long day of outdoor activity.

If kayaking or paddleboarding is more your speed, consider heading out to the mangrove forest of Beef Island. The mangroves are crucial in nurturing young marine life, providing a safe area away from the dangers of the open ocean. During a paddle there, you might spot barracudas, stingrays, turtles, or even young sharks. A guided tour through these mangroves is available through multiple tour agencies.

Best Things to Do in Tortola

If you’d prefer a more adventurous bird’s eye view of Tortola and the other neighboring islands, then perhaps you should book a zip line tour. The Original Virgin Canopy Tour is located a short ride outside of Road Town at the top of Johnson’s Ghut. Here, you will have amazing views as you soar over the rainforest canopy.

Make it a Beach Day

No visit to a Caribbean island should be complete until spending some time relaxing on the beach. Cane Garden Bay and Brewers Bay are the two most recommended beaches on Tortola.

Cane Garden Bay, on the north side of Tortola, is the busiest beach strip on the island. It offers plenty of sand, sun, and generally calm waters at no cost. There are plenty of amenities at Cane Garden Bay including several beach bars and restaurants, chair rentals (at Myett’s, among others), and water sport rentals sure to please cruisers of all ages.

Best Things to Do in Tortola

If you are looking for a quieter scene, Brewers Bay is just north of Cane Garden Bay. It too offers a great sandy beach, Nicole’s beach bar where chair rentals are available, and great snorkeling.

If you head west on the island, Long Bay Beach is another popular cruiser destination as is Smuggler’s Cove. Smuggler’s Cove offers another great snorkeling location on Tortola and a nice spot to relax without all the crowds. It is a bit more off the beaten path though, consisting of some unpaved and bumpy roads.

If you’d prefer to get a bit more adventurous, you can book a snorkeling tour to the uninhabited Norman Island. Here, you can explore the caves and maybe even do some treasure hunting.

Best Things to Do in Tortola

Take an Island Tour

Taking a scenic drive through Tortola to marvel at the island’s lush landscape and beautiful coastline rounds out our list of the Best Things to Do in Tortola on a Cruise. As you journey through Road Town, along Ridge Road which is the “central spine” of the island or along the coast on Sir Francis Drakes Highway, there are scenic stops and photo opportunities with panoramic vistas of neighboring islands.

Best Things to Do in Tortola on a Cruise

The Callwood Distillery, located near Cane Garden Bay, is the world’s longest continuously running distillery. You can enjoy a tour of the facilities and sample the different types of rum distilled onsite for a nominal fee.

Best Things to Do in Tortola on a Cruise

Soper’s Hole Marina on the west end of Tortola used to be a great stop for some leisurely shopping, food, and drink.

Do you have an upcoming cruise heading to Amber Cove? If so, then this guide to everything you need to know about Amber Cove Dominican Republic is for you.

If, after reading this guide you still have questions, drop us an anchor below and we will be happy to help make your trip to Amber Cove a memorable one.

Amber Cove, Dominican Republic

Everything You Need to Know About Amber Cove Dominican Republic (2024)

What is Amber Cove in the Dominican Republic?

Amber Cove Cruise Center is one of the Dominican Republic’s newest cruise ports; it opened in 2015. This port of call is located on the Bay of Maimon along the Dominican Republic’s northern “Amber Coast.” It is located just northwest of Puerto Plata.

This two-berth cruise terminal is named after the amber stone that is mined in the area. It represents one of the largest cruise industry investments ever made in the Dominican Republic. This 25-acre cruise port was an $85 million investment by Carnival Corporation.

Everything You Need to Know About Amber Cove Dominican Republic

Despite being quite new, Amber Cove maintains a historic vibe as the nearby Puerto Plata actually dates back to the late 1400’s. Thus, Amber Cove serves as your gateway to historic sites, beautiful beaches, and a plethora of adventurous activities while visiting the Dominican Republic.

Prior to the development of Amber Cove, this area of the Dominican Republic hadn’t seen a cruise ship since the 1980’s. Today, there is still less cruise traffic, allowing you to explore with less crowds.

Getting to Amber Cove Dominican Republic

Amber Cove is a private cruise line destination. So the only way to visit this port of call is on a cruise, much like Royal Caribbean’s Perfect Day at CocoCay, NCL’s Great Stirrup Cay, or Half Moon Cay.

Amber Cove, Dominican Republic was built by Carnival Corporation, and therefore is primarily used by cruise brands within the Carnival Corp. fleet. Currently, ships from Holland America, Carnival, Princess, Costa, and Cunard have Amber Cove on their itinerary schedules.

Other non-Carnival Corp. cruise lines do occasionally call at Amber Cove as well though, such as Norwegian Cruise Line and MSC Cruises.

Everything You Need to Know About Amber Cove Dominican Republic

Once you arrive at Amber Cove in the Dominican Republic, it is a short walk down the pier to the main port area. For those who can’t walk long distances, there are complimentary pedicabs to drive you down the pier.

There is plenty to do in the port area. However, there is also a transportation hub off the main port area for taxis and buses allowing visitors easy access to other attractions in Puerto Plata.

What’s Included at Amber Cove, Dominican Republic?

When visiting Amber Cove in the Dominican Republic on a cruise, guests have the option to spend the day in the port or book an excursion to explore more of this historic area.

While Amber Cove does not have a beach, there is plenty to do within the port without spending any money. The biggest draw of Amber Cove is the large resort-style pool.

Everything You Need to Know About Amber Cove Dominican Republic

This pool has a swim-up bar and plenty of lounge chairs to relax and soak up the sun. The beach loungers are complimentary, but you will need to bring towels from the ship. When we visited it was only our ship in port, so this area was pretty quiet. Still, we suggest getting off the ship sooner rather than later to secure the best spots.

Located near the pool are also two waterslides and a splash pad for kids. Again, these areas are free for the little ones to enjoy at no added cost. There is also a basketball and volleyball court, as well as a giant chess game.

If you want to escape the crowds near the pool, there is a small secluded section of hammocks near the bay.

Everything You Need to Know About Amber Cove Dominican Republic

There is also a large shopping area to browse. Near the end of the shopping center, you won’t want to miss the photo op with the Amber Cove sign. This sign is strategically located for the perfect photo with your cruise ship in the background.

Unfortunately, food and drinks are NOT included at Amber Cove Dominican Republic. While there are restaurants and bars, they will cost you extra money. Also, your cruise ship drink package will not work at the bars in this port area.

Further, your ship WiFi package will not work here either. If you have international cell phone coverage, local rates will apply. Or, you can purchase an all-day Amber Cove WiFi pass for just $8.

Food and Drinks at Amber Cove

While the food and drinks will cost extra at Amber Cove Dominican Republic, you might still want to sample the local flavor.

Amber Cove has two eating areas, one near the pool and the other in the shopping area. Both Coco Caña locations offer food and drinks to purchase at a la carte prices. The location near the pool also has a swim-up bar.

Everything You Need to Know About Amber Cove Dominican Republic

Additionally, the Sky Bar is worth a visit while in Amber Cove Dominican Republic. Cruisers can reach this hilltop bar via a series of dirt steps or an inclined walkway near the waterslides. Once at the top, you will be rewarded with beautiful panoramic views of Amber Cove and perhaps a drink or two.

Things to Do at Amber Cove, Dominican Republic

While in Amber Cove, the most popular activity is probably the Aqua Zone. You can easily spend the entire day just lounging by this complimentary pool area, while the kids enjoy the waterslides and splash pad.

You can rent umbrellas for $20, lockers for $6, or book a VIP package which entitles you to a reserved area near the pool with additional amenities.

If you are looking for a bit of adventure, Amber Cove Dominican Republic has a zipline that soars over the pool area. Guests can purchase an all-day pass for just $20. There is also a water sports rental area. Here, guests can rent items like paddleboards, hydrobikes, kayaks, pedal boats, or solar catamarans for either a half hour or an hour at varying prices from $20 to $60.

Everything You Need to Know About Amber Cove Dominican Republic

Of course, it wouldn’t be a visit to the Caribbean without doing a little shopping. The marketplace right at the port offers more than just your typical shops. You can purchase rum, coffee, chocolate, amber, and various other items.

If you want to upgrade your day at Amber Cove, you can rent a cabana. You can choose between a Hillside Cabana, Poolside Cabana, Ocean Cabana, or Grand Cabana.

Most cabana rentals include bottles of water and soda, a basket of local goodies, and an all-day pass for eight guests for the zip-line, as well as some specific amenities based on which cabana you choose. Pricing for these cabanas vary from $500+ to $2,000+.

Shore Excursions at Amber Cove

If you’d prefer to venture beyond Amber Cove, there are plenty of shore excursions that depart from this port area. These excursions vary from beach breaks and historical tours to adventure activities.

Puerto Plata’s Atlantic coastline has more than 60 miles of beaches. Thus, spending the day at the beach is a popular way to enjoy a call at Amber Cove. The cruise lines offer the All-Inclusive Coconut Cove and Playa Bachata beach breaks as well as other beach stops included in Puerto Plata sightseeing tours.

Puerto Plata’s Malecon is known for its shopping, restaurants, and bars where you can enjoy a bit of Dominican culture. At the very end of the seafront, you will see the massive stone walls of the Fortress of San Felipe, a historic military fortress converted into a museum.

Fortress of San Felipe

You can also partake in chocolate factory tours, visit the Amber Museum, tour the Brugal Rum factory or a cigar factory, and interact with local coffee farmers.

Monkeyland is another popular attraction near Amber Cove for families. Here, you can interact with the friendly squirrel monkeys.

You can also enjoy more animal encounters at the popular Ocean World Adventure Park. Here, you can watch dolphin, sea lion, shark, and tropical bird shows; go snorkeling; swim in the Pirate’s Pool; or just relax at the Dolphin Beach Lagoon.

Damajagua Falls is just a 30 minute ride south of Amber Cove and is the premier attraction of Puerto Plata. Here, you can climb, slide, and jump from a number of these 27 waterfalls for the ultimate day of adventure.

If you are looking for more adventure, your cruise line will also offer horseback riding, ziplining, dune buggy rides, and catamaran sails during your visit to Amber Cove.

Two of the most popular cruise destinations in the world, the Caribbean and the Bahamas might seem similar enough at first glance. However, these neighboring collections of sunny islands off the southern tip of Florida stand apart in more ways than one.

If you’re trying to decide between a Caribbean vs Bahamas cruise, or one that visits both, read on to learn which cruise is the right choice for you.

Caribbean vs. Bahamas Cruise: What’s Better?

What’s the Difference Between the Bahamas and the Caribbean?

To start, the Commonwealth of the Bahamas is an island nation, with its own flag, currency, and prime minister. The Lucayan Archipelago consists of roughly 3,000 islands, islets, and cays in the Atlantic Ocean. The Bahamian capital of Nassau is one of the busiest ports of call in the world.

Caribbean vs. Bahamas Cruise What's Better

The Caribbean is a subregion of the Americas located in the Caribbean Sea. Consisting of more than a dozen countries, these island nations are typically divided into three categories: Eastern Caribbean, Western Caribbean, and Southern Caribbean.

Like the Bahamas, each island in the Caribbean has its own unique culture and characteristics. Popular ports of call in the Caribbean include St. Thomas, USVI; St. Maarten/St. Martin; and San Juan, Puerto Rico.

Notably, while Bermuda is at times on a Caribbean cruise itinerary, the British island territory is not part of the Caribbean. Bermuda itineraries are often listed separately by cruise lines.

Perks of a Bahamas Cruise

Departing from cruise ports like Miami or New York, Bahamas cruises are great for travelers seeking short cruise getaways. Able to reach the islands of the Bahamas within hours, cruise ships calling on the warm-weather ports of Nassau or Freeport is a no-brainer.

Cruise line Margaritaville at Sea (formerly Bahamas Paradise) has built an entire business on two-night sailings from West Palm Beach to Grand Bahama Island and back.

Beyond the officially recognized ports of the Bahamas are a slew of private islands and private ports. These destinations offer cruisers an exclusive resort-style experience ashore. Most cruise lines, including Carnival, Princess, Royal Caribbean, MSC and Norwegian, all offer their own private islands in the Bahamas. These include Half Moon Cay, Princess Cays, Perfect Day at CocoCay, Ocean Cay MSC Marine Reserve and Great Stirrup Cay, among others. Virgin Voyages has a private beach club accessible only to cruisers on the island of Bimini.

How to Spend Two Days at Perfect Day CocoCay Bahamas

Often, the Bahamas is lumped into longer sailings that also call on the Caribbean. However, short cruises to the Bahamas are typically among some of the cheapest cruise vacations that you can book.

Logistically, a passport is not required if the voyage sails round trip from the U.S. (so to and from Fort Lauderdale, for example). Also making the Bahamas an easy destination to visit is that English is the official language and the U.S. dollar is widely accepted.

Perks of a Caribbean Cruise

The Caribbean is often referred to as a default cruise destination. But in fact, the islands of the Caribbean are vastly different. That is a good thing, since you can return to this tropical paradise again and again, experiencing something new each time.

On one end of the spectrum, you can visit the Caribbean without leaving the United States — yes, you read that right. Puerto Rico as well as the U.S. Virgin Islands are territories of the U.S. and therefore do not require a passport. That doesn’t mean that you won’t feel as if you haven’t left the country. The food, customs, and even language throughout ports like San Juan or St. Croix will definitely put you in vacation mode. If the sun, surf, and sand doesn’t do it, we offer three letters: r-u-m.

Caribbean vs. Bahamas Cruise What's Better

On the other end of the Caribbean spectrum are islands that remain part of foreign nations like France or the Netherlands. In one instance, a single island can be part of both, as is the case with St. Martin (French) and St. Maarten (Dutch) — separate but also the same. This gives its ports an intriguing blend of European influence alongside its local treasures.

There are also Caribbean island chains to explore like the British Virgin Islands (Tortola, Virgin Gorda, Anegada, and Jost Van Dyke) and the ABC Islands (Aruba, Bonaire, and Curacao). Many cruises give you the opportunity to visit various ports within these island chains over the course of a week or more.

The point we’re making about the Caribbean is that it’s a versatile cruise destination. It has way more depth and complexity than a nice beach to catch a tan. You can book a close-to-home Caribbean cruise from a homeport like Galveston, TX to Cozumel and Costa Maya in Mexico (considered Western Caribbean). Or you can venture further on a small ship that visits tucked-away harbors like Gustavia, St. Barts or St. John’s in Antigua and Barbuda.

Bahamas Cruise Itineraries

There are very few established cruise ports in The Bahamas. Therefore, you will likely visit a cruise line-owned private island as part of your Bahamas itinerary. This is typically a plus. Many of these destinations include amenities like the use of pools or sun loungers in the cruise fare. Another perk is that oftentimes, your cruise line beverage package extends to the bars on the cruise line’s private island.

Sample Bahamas cruise itineraries include:

 • Royal Caribbean’s 3-Night Bahamas & Perfect Day: Round trip from Miami, calling only on Perfect Day at CocoCay
 • Carnival’s 4-Night Bahamas Cruise: Round trip from Jacksonville, with calls in Freeport and Nassau
 • Norwegian’s 4-Night Bahamas Cruise: Round trip from Miami to Grand Bahama Island, Great Stirrup Cay and Nassau
 • MSC’s 7-Night The Bahamas and Florida: Round trip from Brooklyn to Ocean Cay and Nassau
 • Holland America’s 10-Day Western Caribbean Explorer: Round trip from Ft. Lauderdale, with calls on Half Moon Cay and Nassau (among others)
Caribbean vs. Bahamas Cruise What's Better

Caribbean Cruise Itineraries

The Caribbean is typically broken down into Western Caribbean (think: Mexico); Southern Caribbean (typically includes the ABC Islands); and Eastern Caribbean, which is often paired with The Bahamas. The selection of Caribbean ports is far vaster than Bahamas-focused voyages, but a few sample Caribbean cruise itineraries include:

 • Royal Caribbean’s 5-Night Eastern Caribbean Cruise: Round trip from Miami, with calls in Puerto Plata, Dominican Republic and Labadee, Haiti.
 • Carnival’s 5Night Western Caribbean Cruise: Round trip from New Orleans, with calls in Progreso and Cozumel, Mexico
 • Norwegian’s 7-Night Caribbean Cruise: Round trip from Port Canaveral, calling on Ocho Rios, Jamaica; Georgetown, Grand Cayman; Cozumel, Mexico; and Great Stirrup Cay, Bahamas
 • MSC’s 7-Night Southern Caribbean Cruise: Round trip from Pointe-a-Pitre, Guadeloupe, calling on Castries, St. Lucia; Bridgetown, Barbados; Kingstown, St. Vincent & Grenadines; St. George, Grenada; and Fort-de-France, Martinique
 • Holland America’s 9-Night Southern Caribbean Seafarer: Round trip from Ft. Lauderdale, with calls on Willemstad, Curacao; Kralendijk, Bonaire; and Oranjestad, Aruba; with Half Moon Cay, Bahamas
Wonder of the Seas Inaugural Cruise Review

Final Verdict: Bahamas Cruises vs. Caribbean Cruises

The islands of either the Bahamas or the Caribbean will likely provide you with sunshine and good vibes, year-round. (Both are subject to Atlantic hurricane season from May through October. So, be aware of that prior to booking either destination.)

As with any cruise, it all depends on what you’re looking to get out of your vacation. If it’s a short getaway — maybe to celebrate a milestone with friends or family — the easiest option might be a Bahamas cruise, especially from ports in Florida. The Bahamas is also extremely family-friendly, as many of the private islands cater to kids as well as adults.

If you’re looking to go a bit farther or spend a bit longer, consider an itinerary in the Caribbean. A favorite among honeymooners, the Caribbean can be as well suited to relaxation and romance as it can be for partying. Depending on the homeport, short Caribbean cruises are still available in the Eastern and Western regions. For something a bit different, and typically better for couples, try a Southern Caribbean cruise.

wearing a mask on a cruise

Active and water-loving cruisers can’t go wrong with a stint in the Bahamas. Here, clear waters are prime for swimming and snorkeling. Those looking for more culture, should be impressed by the Mayan ruins of Mexico or the shipwreck museum of St. Thomas.

Wherever your ship brings you — and it might very well be to both destinations — you can’t go wrong. The Bahamas and the Caribbean are two of the top cruise destinations for a reason. Book that much-needed break at sea and find out for yourself!

The Caribbean nation of Haiti is currently undergoing an extreme political crisis due to violent gang activity in its capital city of Port-Au-Prince. The country’s Prime Minister has been forced to resign as the gangs have taken over the city and toppled the government.

As the chaos continues, many travelers are wondering how that might affect their travels to Haiti and its neighboring country, the Dominican Republic. Well, Haiti is currently at a Level 4: Do Not Travel in the U.S. State Department’s travel advisory system. As it relates to cruising, only one cruise line calls in Haiti — Royal Caribbean International. And the cruise line has made moves to ensure that its passengers are safe amidst the crisis.

Royal Caribbean suspends calls to Labadee, Haiti

Royal Caribbean has its own private destination, Labadee, on the northern coast of Haiti about 130 miles away from Port-Au-Prince. On March 14, 2024, Royal Caribbean released a statement saying it suspended calls to Labadee effective immediately. “Due to the evolving situation in Haiti, and in an abundance of caution, we’re temporarily suspending our visits to Labadee for our entire fleet. We continue to monitor and assess the situation with our Global Security & Intelligence Team.”

Royal Caribbean suspends calls to Labadee, Haiti, but is it still safe to visit the Dominican Republic on a cruise?

Royal Caribbean International President and CEO Michael Bayley posted a similar statement on his Facebook page. He states, “We have suspended calls into Labadee, Haiti for the next 7 days and will continue suspension on a rolling basis with 3 days advance notification to our guests sailing on itineraries impacted and changed as we monitor and evaluate the situation in Haiti.”

Ships with scheduled visits to Labadee this month included Symphony, Grandeur, Odyssey, and Mariner of the Seas, among others. The cruise line replaced this call in Labadee with either another port (many in the Bahamas) or a sea day.

About Labadee

Labadee is a 260-acre private destination that was leased to and developed by Royal Caribbean in the late 1980s. It underwent massive renovations in 2009, which included upgraded port facilities that could accommodate the docking of Royal Caribbean’s largest ships in the Oasis class.

Even though it is a peninsula on mainland Haiti, Labadee operates much like a cruise line private island and even has its own private security. Only guests and employees of Royal Caribbean are able to use the resort facilities there.

Many guests use their day in Labadee as a beach or watersports day. They can enjoy the warm waters and activities like jet-skiing, kayaking, snorkeling, and parasailing. Visitors can also take part in fishing, speedboat, and catamaran excursions. Kids can enjoy the floating water park complete with trampolines, water slides, and pyramids.

For bigger thrills, Labadee offers the Dragon’s Tail alpine coaster. There’s also the 2,600-foot long Dragon’s Breath zip line and Dragon’s Fire zip line.

Lunch at Labadee is complimentary at three different spots throughout the resort area. There are also several bars on the property.

Is it safe to visit ports in the Dominican Republic?

Haiti and the Dominican Republic share the island of Hispaniola. This means the Dominican Republic is the only country that shares a border with Haiti. Thus, some travelers have been wondering if the Dominican Republic is safe to visit given the scale of destruction and chaos that’s taking place in Haiti.

The extreme level of current gang violence is almost entirely in Haiti’s capital of Port-Au-Prince. And there are no cruise ports in the Dominican Republic that are anywhere close to Port-Au-Prince… or even close to the border at all.

For reference, the closest to Port-Au-Prince are the Don Diego Terminal in the Dominican Republic’s capital of Santo Domingo on the south, and Amber Cove Cruise Port in the Puerto Plata province in the north. Santo Domingo is about a six-hour drive from Port-Au-Prince. Amber Cove, though about the same distance as the crow flies, is actually about a 8.5 hour drive from Port-Au-Prince.

Amber Cove Dominican Republic

Further, the border is currently closed between Haiti and the Dominican Republic, which is partly divided by a river. There are heightened levels of security at the border as well.

The U.S. State Department’s travel advisory for the Dominican Republic is currently at Level 2: Exercise Increased Caution. This has been the case since June of last year. This means that the State Department has not increased its DR travel advisory due to the current conflict in Haiti.

All of this is to say that if you’re taking a cruise soon that has a call to the Dominican Republic, don’t be overly concerned about whether your safety is at stake due to what’s happening over the border hundreds of miles away.

Treat the visit as you would a visit to the DR any other time of the year. Be aware of your surroundings, don’t bring or wear expensive jewelry or accessories ashore, and stick to the more touristy areas as much as possible.

The post How to Pick the Best Time to Go on a Cruise appeared first on EatSleepCruise.com.

]]>

When considering the best time to go on a cruise, there are multiple factors that have to be accounted for — namely the region you want to sail. The best time for a Caribbean cruise isn’t going to be the same as the best time for a northern Europe or Alaska voyage, for example. Other factors like cost, weather, and crowds might also be things you take into consideration.

To help you figure out when you should best aim for taking a cruise, we’re breaking down our recommendations by region.

Call to Book Your Next Cruise Now: 1-855-228-5584!

How to Pick the Best Time to Go on a Cruise

Caribbean and Bahamas

There isn’t necessarily any “bad” time to cruise to the Caribbean or Bahamas, with the region welcoming cruise ships all year-round. However there are things to take into consideration, such as hurricane season which runs from June through November. Prices tend to be a bit cheaper from September through November, because of this and because kids are back in school.

Best Time to Go on a Cruise

Weather and crowd-wise, we recommend taking a Caribbean or Bahamas cruise in the January to mid-May time period, not counting school break weeks. The weather is more mild this time of year, it’s not hurricane season, and crowds shouldn’t be quite as heavy when school is in session.

Alaska

The Alaska cruise season generally runs from mid-April through September; cruise ships don’t sail in the region when it’s at its coldest throughout the winter. Of the cruising season, there isn’t a clear-cut answer when it comes to when is “best.”

To avoid crowds, choose a voyage during the shoulder season in April, May, or September. The least rainy month is May, while the warmest (and busiest) will be July and August. Certain times of the Alaska cruise season also increase your chances of seeing wildlife and/or the Norther Lights.

Mediterranean

Cruise ships sail in the Mediterranean all year long, but the primary season runs from April into early November. For more mild weather and less crowds than during the busy summer season, aim for a Mediterranean voyage in early May or September.

Best Time to Go on a Cruise

For the lowest crowds, look for one of the few voyages sailing in the winter or early spring. If you’re looking for warmth and sunbathing weather, June and July are good bets — avoid August if possible due to the hottest temperatures and highest crowd levels.

Mexican Riviera

There isn’t really a “bad” time to cruise to Mexico’s west coast, as the weather ranges from balmy to hot the majority of the year, and cruise ships sail there year-round.

For warm weather that isn’t too hot and the best chance at no rain, look to visit the Mexican Riviera during the winter and into early spring. As long as you avoid time periods where kids are off from school (Christmas break, winter break, spring break, etc.), you’ll also encounter fewer crowds during this timeframe.

EXCLUSIVE SAVINGS: Get Deals on Your Next Cruise Now!

Bermuda

The Bermuda cruise season generally runs from late March into early November. For mild weather, cheaper cruise fares, and fewer crowds, try to sail right at the beginning of the season in April or May. If you don’t mind spring break crowds, Good Friday and Easter is a fun time to visit Bermuda as there are lots of fun treats to eat and a Good Friday kite flying event at Horseshoe Bay Beach.

If enjoying the fanfare of a yacht racing event is more your speed, try to plan your cruise for the end of April at the beginning of the Bermuda International Invitational Race Week.

Best Time to Go on a Cruise

Northern Europe

Though cruises are available in northern Europe year-round, you’ll find the largest amount of voyages during the warmer months in spring, summer, and the beginning of fall. The best season to take a cruise in northern Europe weather-wise is in the summer from June through August. If you’re okay with cooler weather and want fewer crowds, opt for a sailing in September or October.

Canada/New England

The best time to visit Canada and New England is highly subjective based on what your goal is in going there. If you want the warmest, sunniest weather to explore quaint coastal towns and cities on the northern Atlantic seaboard, July and August are your best bets.

But many travelers head to this region specifically to see the dazzling fall foliage, in which case the best time to visit is October. September can be a good middle ground, because crowds will thin out (as school is back in session) but the weather will still be warm. There’s also a chance to see the start of the leaves changing towards the end of the month, though it varies from year-to-year and is never guaranteed.

Australia/New Zealand

Cruises sail Down Under year-round, and there is no cut-and-dry answer as to when the best season is to sail. Different parts of the region experience different weather in relation to the seasons, and it comes down to what’s most important to you.

For sunny skies and hot days in many parts of the continent where cruise ships sail, take a cruise during the austral summer. Since the seasons are flipped for the northern and southern hemispheres, that means during our winter season, from around December through March.

Legendary Voyages Highlight Holland America's 2024-2045 Australia and South Pacific Season

Waiting until at least February or March is a good idea for avoiding crowds, as Australian and New Zealander kids’ summer break generally runs from mid-December through January. For a voyage in northern Australia, consider March or later, as the cyclone season runs through February.

Hawaii

Like many other regions, there isn’t really a “bad” time to visit Hawaii. Certain times of year are preferable than others based on one factor, but another time of year will be more desirable based on another factor.

If you want more mild weather that isn’t in the rainy season, consider April to May or September to October. For the least chance of a rain shower (but the hottest temperatures), take a cruise to Hawaii in June, July, or August. For the best prices, look into voyages that sail in November and early December.

Royal Caribbean’s Private Islands

Perfect Day at CocoCay

One of the Berry Islands, Royal Caribbean’s private island in the Bahamas underwent an extensive renovation in 2019. The destination was transformed into the tropical paradise known today as Perfect Day at CocoCay. Since the upgrade, tendering is now a thing of the past. Guests can simply walk ashore to enjoy all the island has to offer.

Perfect Day at CocoCay (previously Little Stirrup Cay) is available only for the company’s cruise ships (and occasionally Celebrity Cruises). It is in close proximity to Nassau, making it an ideal stop on the cruise line’s Bahamas and Caribbean itineraries.

Many of the attractions on Perfect Day at CocoCay are complimentary. Like most cruise line private islands, there are plenty of soft sandy beaches with loungers and umbrellas for the ultimate day of relaxation.

There is also the Oasis Lagoon Pool, the Caribbean’s largest freshwater pool. This expansive oasis is open to guests of all ages and even features a DJ and swim-up bar. We’d say that sounds like a pretty Perfect Day at CocoCay!

This is truly a family destination. So, the kids will love the Splashaway Bay aquapark and the shipwrecked Captain Jill’s Galleon located near the pier. Both water features are free for the little ones to enjoy.

You won’t go hungry during your day ashore either. There are two island buffets, Chill Grill and Skipper’s Grill. Perhaps our favorite spot for lunch though is the Snack Shacks located around the island. These quick service stands serve up hamburgers, chicken sandwiches, salads, mozzarella sticks, funnel cake, and more.

Another great feature of Perfect Day at CocoCay is that your ship’s WiFi packages and drink packages work on the island. So, be sure to grab a coco loco while enjoying your day of fun in the sun.

While there are many complimentary activities on the island, admission to signature attractions like the Thrill Waterpark (featuring a wave pool and the tallest slide in North America), Zipline, and Helium Balloon will cost you extra money. There are also up-charge shore excursions available.

Finally, the luxurious Coco Beach Club requires an additional fee for entrance too. A Coco Beach Club pass will grant you access to exclusive facilities. These include an oceanfront infinity pool, private beach, and a restaurant.

Labadee

Also exclusively for travelers on Royal Caribbean ships, Labadee is located on a peninsula on the northern coast of Haiti. Labadee was the cruise line’s original private destination.

Given its location, Labadee is more mountainous with lush vegetation than most of the other cruise line private islands. This affords for some unique experiences and shore excursions. Since Labadee is guarded and guests are not allowed to leave the property, all excursions must be booked directly with the cruise line.

If you are into adventure, then we highly suggest checking out the Dragon’s Breath or the Dragon’s Fire Flight Lines. The Dragon’s Breath Flight Line is the original zipline option where you sit in a harness. The Dragon’s Fire Flight Line is the newer option where you lay in the harness. Both launching platforms are located right next to each other up the mountainside and will have you racing over the ocean!

If this sounds like too much thrill for you, you may want to check out the Dragon’s Tail Coaster. This ride is similar to an alpine slide. It is a 680 foot drop with speeds that can reach 30 mph as you twist and turn your way down through the mountainside. During the ride, you will be treated to gorgeous island views and sights of your cruise ship in the distance.

Of course, if you’d prefer a day of relaxation, there’s plenty of beachfront space to do so. Across the five stretches of beach, you will find plenty of lounge chairs and the perfect vibe to fit your mood from the quieter Columbus Cove to the livelier Adrenaline Beach.

While ashore at Labadee, guests can enjoy an island BBQ and drinks from one of the many bars. Like Perfect Day at CocoCay, your Royal Caribbean drink package works here. So, be sure to grab the island’s signature Labadoozie.

Norwegian Cruise Line’s Private Islands

Great Stirrup Cay

Also located in the Berry Islands, not too far from Perfect Day at CocoCay, is Norwegian Cruise Line’s private island. Great Stirrup Cay was the first cruise line private island when it was acquired back in the 1970’s, but it has come a long way since then.

Unfortunately, guests will need to tender ashore to Great Stirrup Cay. This means that weather conditions may impact your ability to visit the island.

Great Stirrup Cay offers an expansive coastline full of sandy beaches for you to spend your day relaxing on the island. With recent updates, there are now plenty of lounge chairs to accommodate NCL’s larger ships, newly planted palm trees for some added shade, and clamshells available for rent.

Book a Cruise to a Private Island After the Pandemic

Guests can also go snorkeling, rent kayaks or jet skis, brave the ziplines, or even book an excursion off the island to swim with the pigs.

Dining options are plentiful on GSC as well. The Jumbey Beach Grill is the main island buffet offering hot dogs, hamburgers, jerk chicken, fresh fruit, salad, a pizza station, and desserts. Other additions to Great Stirrup Cay include the Abaco Taco stand and the Tropic Like It’s Hot food truck. We particularly enjoy Abaco Taco.

To go along with your food, there are plenty of bar options, and the NCL drink packages work on the island too.

A newer addition to the island is the exclusive Silver Cove. This private retreat offers exclusive amenities for Haven guests, guests who book a villa, and guests who book treatments at the Mandara spa located in this area.

Silver Cove features a private restaurant, private Moet Bar, and private lagoon and beach area. Not to mention, the villas are the ultimate in luxury with private bathrooms, air conditioning, a television, and more.

Harvest Caye

Harvest Caye is Norwegian Cruise Line’s private destination located in southern Belize. This 75-acre retreat opened in 2016 in partnership with the country of Belize as a hub to explore this Caribbean destination. While located only about a mile from the mainland of Belize, the only way to visit this island is on an NCL cruise.

Cruise ships are able to dock at Harvest Caye. This allows guests access to walk directly off the ship on to the island.

Best Cruise Line Private Islands

The island features a lagoon pool, a 7-acre beach, restaurants and bars, and a variety of shore excursion options. Perhaps the most popular spot is the 15,000 square foot resort pool. It features plenty of lounge chairs and umbrellas, a swim-up bar, and even a water feature. There is also a splash park for the little ones and a shopping center with local artisans, rum tastings, and the popular Moho Chocolates.

Additionally, Harvest Caye is home to a complimentary nature and conservation center with butterflies and birds and plenty of on-island up-charge experiences. Some of these options include the Flighthouse Zipline package, watersports, and parasailing. There are also excursions that take you to the mainland to visit Mayan ruins, snorkel the barrier reef, river tube, and more.

However, unlike other private islands, the food on Harvest Caye is NOT included. Your NCL drink package will NOT work on the island either. Still, there are plenty of food and drink options available for purchase.

Carnival’s Private Islands

While Carnival Cruise Line doesn’t have its own private island per se, the brand does share other Carnival Corp. private islands in the Bahamas. These include Holland America Line’s Half Moon Cay and Princess Cruises’ Princess Cays.

Half Moon Cay

Half Moon Cay is one of the 700 islands that make up the archipelago of The Bahamas. This small island is located approximately 100 miles southeast of Nassau and covers 2,400 acres. Though, only 50 acres has been developed into an exclusive beach resort. The rest of the area remains as a wildlife habitat.

Formerly known as Little San Salvador Island, the island’s name was changed to Half Moon Cay to reflect its crescent-shaped beach.

Unfortunately, the water around Half Moon Cay is quite shallow preventing docking. Thus, you will need to tender to head ashore, which takes about 20 minutes.

Holland America Line Rotterdam Caribbean Cruise Review

When you think of a cruise line private island, you probably envision stretches of beautifully manicured beaches. And Half Moon Cay is exactly that! Half Moon Beach is a stretch of approximately 2.5 miles of soft, sandy beachfront. However, there is no pool on Half Moon Cay.

Like most cruise line private islands, there is also a complimentary tropical island buffet and several bars on the island. However, your cruise line drink package will NOT work here.

If you are looking for a little activity while on Half Moon Cay, there are hiking and nature trails, bike tours, snorkeling, horseback riding, watersport rentals, and more.

Princess Cays

Princess Cays is Princess Cruises beautiful private island resort in the Bahamas, situated approximately 70 miles east of Nassau. This 40-acre retreat is located on the southern tip of Eleuthera Island and is often a stop on many of the line’s Caribbean cruises.

Unfortunately though, Princess Cays is a tender port, meaning guests will need to take small tender boats ashore. This means that weather may impact your ability to visit the island.

Like most cruise line private islands, Princes Cays is known for its white sandy beaches, crystal clear waters, and lush greenery. The island has a half-mile of pristine beaches that are perfect for sunbathing, swimming, and snorkeling.

Best Cruise Line Private Islands

The island also offers a range of water activities, such as kayaking and paddleboarding. Cruisers can rent equipment, take guided tours including stingray encounters and bike tours, or simply relax during their day at Princess Cays. If you want to upgrade your day ashore, there are bungalows available to rent as well. Cruise passengers are also able to leave Princess Cays to explore the rest of Eleuthera if they choose.

Of course, there are also beach bars and restaurants where visitors can enjoy a refreshing drink or some BBQ lunch. There’s also a Straw Market market with a collection of local vendors selling handmade souvenirs, jewelry, and other crafts.

If you are visiting Princess Cays on a Princess cruise ship, your cruise line drink package will work on the island. However, if you are visiting on a Carnival cruise ship, your drink package will not work on Princess Cays.

Disney Cruise Line’s Castaway Cay

Castaway Cay is Disney Cruise Line’s private island in the Bahamas, formerly known as Gorda Cay. This exclusive port of call for DCL is located near Great Abaco Island in the Bahamas. This 3-mile long island is just over 70 miles north of Nassau and covers 1,000 acres.

The good news is that Castaway Cay has a pier. Thus, cruisers can just walk ashore from the ship to experience stunning beaches alongside some Disney magic.

Family Beach is the largest of the Castaway Cay beaches. Here, you will find plenty of lounge chairs, colorful umbrellas, and hammocks scattered throughout the area. This is also where you will find many of the activities like watercraft rentals, snorkeling, and swimming.

Serenity Bay Beach is the adults only area on Disney’s Castaway Cay. This area is exclusively for guests 18+. While the adults are enjoying this slice of paradise, kids can enjoy supervised play in Scuttle’s Cove and teens can hang out at their own exclusive space, the Hideout.

Cruisers can also partake in sports and various other complimentary activities during their day ashore, including basketball, beach volleyball, natural trails, and even a 5K. Additionally, families will love the Pelican Plunge water platform with two slides, a drench bucket, and water cannons.

Of course, there’s also shopping and various shore excursions available. From bike rentals, to kayaks, to a Stingray Adventure and more, cruisers will have endless options to enjoy a day of fun in the sun.

After working up an appetite, guests can enjoy a complimentary BBQ lunch or grab a beverage at one of the bars scattered throughout the island.

MSC Cruises’ Ocean Cay Marine Reserve

MSC Cruises’ Ocean Cay Marine Reserve is the newest cruise line private island in the Bahamas. Ocean Cay is located about 20 miles from Bimini and can only be reached by booking an MSC cruise that calls on this private resort. While somewhat less developed than some of these other destinations, there is still plenty to do while visiting Ocean Cay.

This exclusive destination features 8 sandy beaches, teeming marine life, massage huts on the beach, authentic Bahamian cuisine, tropical cocktails, a Bahamian shopping village, and more.

Thankfully, there is a pier so guests can simply walk ashore to discover the pristine natural beauty of the area. There is also an area exclusively for Yacht Club guests.

While ashore, guests can rent watersports equipment, go snorkeling, take a guided tour, or even climb the iconic Lighthouse for panoramic views of the island. There’s even Junkanoo parades and an evening lighthouse show.

The Seakers Food Court is Ocean Cay’s BBQ buffet with items like hamburgers, salads, and other Caribbean offerings. There are a few food trucks scattered around the island as well for a quick bite to eat. Of course, cruise passengers can also grab a drink at one of the many bars around the resort. Perhaps the most eye-catching bar is the Lighthouse Bar.

The good news is that your drink package and WiFi will work ashore on Ocean Cay. However, it’s important to note that the coffee and ice cream at the Smiling Fish are not included.

In keeping with the cruise line’s eco-friendly mission, there are also plans to open a conservation center on the island including a coral nursery and educational facilities.

Virgin Voyages Beach Club at Bimini

The Beach Club at Bimini is Virgin Voyages private resort in the Bahamas. In partnership with Resorts World, Virgin Voyages has exclusive access to this beach club whenever they have a ship in port. On alternate days, cruise passengers from other line’s may be able to purchase Beach Club passes from Resorts World.

This exclusive 4.5 acre resort in the Bahamas overlooks the ocean and offers expansive lagoon-style pools. So, you can choose to spend your day on the beach or lounging by the pool. Either way, there are plenty of complimentary hammocks, loungers, and comfy furniture to relax, as well as private poolside and beach-side cabanas to rent. There’s also an exclusive area for RockStar Suite guests.

While you can technically walk to the Beach Club at Bimini, it is a bit of a hike. The best option is to hop onboard one of the trams that run between the cruise ship pier and the resort. These trams run continuously throughout the day, so you shouldn’t have to wait too long for one to arrive.

Like most cruise line private islands, the Beach Club offers complimentary food options and three bars including a swim-up bar in one of the lagoon pools. The BBQ buffet features a variety of Caribbean-inspired dishes, but don’t expect to find hamburgers or fries. Just like on the cruise ship, drinks will cost extra at the Beach Club. However, if you have a Bar Tab, it can be used on the resort.

The energy at the Club transforms throughout the day from relaxing and rejuvenating, to DJ-led pool parties, to beach bonfires to close out the evening. If you are looking for something other than a pool party scene, there are watersport rentals and excursions, or you can freely explore Bimini on your own.

Luckily, all of Virgin’s Caribbean itineraries visit the Beach Club at Bimini with extended time in port. Thus, you will have plenty of time to enjoy all there is to do.

Other Experiences for Cruise Ship Passengers

In addition to the above mentioned cruise line private islands, there are also other experiences built in conjunction with the cruise lines in various destinations. These purpose-built cruise ports include:

The Caribbean is one of the most popular cruise destinations, with all major cruise lines offering cruises to this region. In fact, nearly 35% of all cruises sail the Caribbean. The Caribbean truly offers that picturesque tropical paradise that most vacationers seek.

Unlike seasonal cruise destinations, the Caribbean generally has warm and inviting weather year-round. Still, if you are planning a trip to the Caribbean, there are several factors to consider when determining the best time to take a Caribbean cruise.

EXCLUSIVE DEALS: Score Savings on Your Next Caribbean Cruise!

When is the best time to cruise to the Caribbean?

When is the best time to go on a Caribbean cruise in terms of weather?

The first factor you will want to consider when planning your Caribbean cruise is the weather. Yes, given its location, Caribbean temperatures remain in the 70’s and 80’s most of the year. However, rainfall does fluctuate seasonally.

wearing a mask on a cruise - best time of year to take a Caribbean cruise

With that being said, the “dry season” generally coincides with the winter months of December to April.

For many, this is the perfect time to take a Caribbean cruise. Cruisers like ourselves love to escape the cold weather and snow back at home for some tropical temperatures and sandy shores.

This makes cruising during the winter months a win-win for weather!

Of course, if you are traveling from a location that could be impacted by winter weather, you should plan to fly to your destination a day early just in case there are any travel delays. You don’t want to risk missing the ship.

Should I cruise to the Caribbean during hurricane season?

In contrast, the months of June to November tend to have the most rainfall in the Caribbean. The peak of the hurricane season also occurs from late August through the end of October.

While this might be a turn-off to many, it’s not as scary as it sounds. It’s actually one of our pro Caribbean cruise tips! There are certainly benefits to cruising during hurricane season like fewer crowds and cheaper prices.

With advancements in technology and hurricane tracking, the cruise ships usually still sail. Most times, they are able to avoid storms and find the tropical weather you are looking for during your vacation.

With that being said, if you choose to cruise during hurricane season, you should not have your heart set on a specific itinerary because you will likely get re-routed if storms occur.

While you might not visit ports on your original itinerary, you will likely still have plenty of sun and sand at your new ports of call. Of course, this is not a 100% certainty. Sometimes, there is just no avoiding a storm.

If you want to avoid most potential hurricanes, you should consider cruises that sail to the Southern Caribbean. These “ABC islands” of Aruba, Bonaire, and Curacao are south of the hurricane belt and therefore are least likely to be affected by these storms.

When is the best time to go on a Caribbean cruise for the fewest crowds?

Much like weather, there are also certain times of year that are preferred if you would like to avoid crowds on your Caribbean cruise.

The busiest times of year for cruises usually coincide with school breaks. If you want to avoid the crowds, you should skip cruising in the summer, during school vacation, and during some holidays.

During these peak times, there will inevitably be more families and children onboard most contemporary cruise lines. While different regions of the country do vary slightly in what weeks these school breaks occur, Spring Break in March is always quite busy.

While K-12 schools in some areas of the United States get vacation this time of year, you will also find many college students looking to party during their March break. Many K-12 schools in the United States also have vacations in February, April, and/or October.

In terms of holidays, the weeks of Christmas and New Year’s will be very busy on a Caribbean cruise. Other holidays that coincide with school vacations can be busy as well. Though, historically crowds are pretty manageable during Thanksgiving week.

Generally speaking, the winter months of December to April (with the exception of the holidays and the select school break weeks) tend to have less crowds. Late August/September through early December also have fewer crowds.

What is the cheapest time of year to go on a Caribbean cruise?

Cruise fares fluctuate considerably depending on a few factors. Pricing can range widely depending on the cruise line, ship, itinerary, and time of year. If you have flexible vacation time, choosing the right time to take a Caribbean cruise can have a big impact on your budget.

Why You Should Book a 2021 Cruise Now - best time of year to take a Caribbean cruise

So, what is the cheapest time of year to go on a Caribbean cruise you ask?

Well, as mentioned above, the summer, school breaks, and holidays tend to attract more crowds. Hence, with increased demand, these times of year are usually more expensive to cruise as well. Cruises during the weeks of Christmas and New Year’s tend to be some of the most expensive all year. Though, summer cruises (June to early August) can get quite pricey too.

We find January into early February, once all the kids are back to school, to be one of the cheapest times of year to take a cruise. Back when we only took one cruise a year, it was always in January. This was the time of year when all factors aligned for us. It was cheap. There were no crowds. And we got to escape the cold and snow back home in Massachusetts.

Cheap fares can also be had on non-break weeks through early May.

Additionally, late August through early October cruises are historically cheap as well. During this time frame, most kids across the United States are already back in school and it is also the peak of hurricane season in the region. If you are willing to take this risk, you can score some amazing deals during this time frame.

Best Time to take a Caribbean cruise for the greatest ship selection

The Caribbean is the most popular cruise destination, so you will have plenty of ship selection. All major cruise lines sail to this region.

Depending on your price point, you will have a range of choices from more contemporary brands like Carnival, Norwegian Cruise Line, and Royal Caribbean to luxury brands like Viking. While more expensive, these luxury brands do offer a more intimate and all-inclusive vacation.

There truly is no best cruise line to sail the Caribbean; it really is a matter of personal preference.

best time of year to take a Caribbean cruise

Even within a cruise line, there are often several classes of ships that offer different amenities and onboard activities. The ships will also vary in size and guest capacity.

If you are looking to cruise on the latest and greatest ships, then you are in luck. Most cruise lines deploy their newest ships to the Caribbean. Of course, these mega-ships have higher demand, so a standard week long cruise on one of these ships will likely come at a higher price point.

While several cruise ships sail in the Caribbean year-round, you will find the MOST selection during the winter season. Many cruise ships do leave the Caribbean in the summer months to sail in seasonal regions of the world. Ships may cruise the Panama Canal en route to Alaska or complete a transatlantic sailing to cruise the Mediterranean in the summer.

Recap of the Best Time to Take a Caribbean Cruise

As you can see, the best time of year to take a Caribbean cruise is truly a personal preference. It all depends what you are looking to get out of your Caribbean cruise vacation. While the weather is generally sunny and warm year-round in the Caribbean, you should consider other factors like crowds, price, and ship selection.

If you want to enjoy a multi-generational cruise, then cruising during school breaks and/or the summer will likely be the best option. You will just need to be aware that many other families will be doing the same thing as you. Thus, you will find increased crowds and increased prices. So, be sure to budget accordingly.

If you are looking to escape the cold weather back home, as well as the crowds during peak cruise times, then cruising during the winter months is likely your best option.

For the cheapest cruise fares, you should consider cruising late August through early October. While this is hurricane season, it’s not as big of a deal as you might initially think. You can also score cheaper fares in the winter months (minus school break weeks).

Now that you know the best time to go on a Caribbean cruise, get planning.
