Most cruise ships from all major brands offer a variety of different stateroom categories. These cabin options vary based on factors such as size, amenities, and location on the ship. When picking the right cabin for your next trip, you will need to evaluate these factors to determine the ideal accommodations for you. When asked for cabin recommendations, we often suggest that those new to cruising book a balcony cabin for a cruise.

While we have sailed in all types of cabins, our go-to room category now is almost exclusively balcony cabins. Why, you might ask? Well, here are our seven reasons we prefer a balcony cabin when we cruise.

Is a cruise balcony cabin worth it? (2024)

The Choices

While older cruise ships have a limited number of balcony staterooms, modern cruise ships offer many more options. On recently-built vessels, balcony cabins can be found on many of the passenger decks. Given the popularity of this stateroom category, you are bound to find a balcony cabin in your ideal location.

We tend to prefer mid-ship balconies located on the middle decks. This way, we are never too far away from anything. Do keep in mind that these mid-ship balconies, closer to popular amenities, cost more money. They also tend to sell out more quickly.

When booking a balcony cabin, the least expensive picks tend to be all the way forward (front of the ship) or all the way aft (back of the ship). They also tend to be on lower passenger decks.

However, one of the most popular cruise balcony staterooms are aft-facing balconies. As the name suggests, these balconies overlook the back of the ship, so you can watch the ship’s wake as you sail. These rooms also tend to be larger than a traditional balcony cabin.

With a variety of different subcategories, you will most likely be able to find a balcony cabin in your price range. There are even some balcony cabins that come with added perks like access to the ship’s thermal suite in the spa.

If you are looking to save money, you could opt for a “guaranteed balcony”.

Norwegian Bliss Balcony Stateroom balcony

Guaranteed staterooms allow you to lock in a cabin within a given category at a discounted rate. The catch is that you don’t get to pick your exact cabin location. In our experiences, booking this rate is a great alternative. We almost never receive the lowest tiered balcony rooms when using this approach. We have actually scored some great balcony locations!

The Extra Space

The least expensive cabins are interior staterooms. As the name implies, they are located in the inside of the ship. These cabins do not offer any windows or views of the outside world. These rooms also tend to be the smallest, often around 150 to 180 square feet.

As you would suspect, as you move up in price, you get more in-room square footage. This is true, of course, of balcony cabins as well. For many of the larger vessels, these staterooms are between 180 and 220 square feet. Believe us, this extra square footage comes in handy during the trip.

When comparing the inside of cruise balcony cabins to inside or ocean view staterooms, we tend to find the extra space comes in the “living area” of the cabin adjacent to the bed and the desk.

is a balcony worth it on a cruise

Honestly, you will probably not notice any extra space in the bathroom in a balcony room. For that, you usually need to upgrade to the suite category.

Still, the extra interior space in a balcony stateroom will allow you to store more gear, organize your belongings better, and spread out a bit when relaxing inside your cabin. That is another reason a balcony cabin is worth it when on a cruise.

Of course, there are larger rooms on cruise ships. Although, those more impressive staterooms also come with a much larger price tag.

When evaluating your need for space inside the room, your cruise line will usually offer cabin layouts and deck plans on its website. Just keep in mind that the size of cruise cabins will not compare to hotel rooms on land — in general they are quite a bit smaller.

The Views

There is nothing like watching the waves pass by as your ship coasts to its next great destination. Or, waking up early and sipping coffee as you pull into your next scenic port of call. These memorable moments experiencing nature are part of what we love about cruising.

Yes, it is possible to have these experiences on the public outdoor decks. Still, it is even more enjoyable from the privacy of your own balcony. So, it shouldn’t be a surprise that many first-time cruisers book a balcony cabin for a cruise.

Carnival Panorama Mexican Riviera Cruise Review

The benefits to having your own private outdoor space to enjoy the surrounding vistas away from the crowds can be priceless. Not to mention, you can use this space to unwind with a book or your electronic device without the noise of the pool deck.

Depending on your room category and location, some balcony categories even come with loungers for sun tanning. However, we have noticed that balconies on larger ships seem to be getting a bit smaller, so most only come standard with two upright chairs and a small table.

Booking a balcony cabin for a cruise can be more important in some regions than others. For instance, we think a balcony is a must when sailing in Alaska. We scored amazing photos from our balcony of glaciers and the scenic coastline. The same goes for European trips where you will have the opportunity to view historic landmarks and cityscapes all from the comforts of your cabin.

Why We Always Book a Balcony Cabin on a Cruise

In the evenings, you can enjoy an unforgettable sunset. Or, stargaze with a cocktail in hand. Perhaps you will sail by cities lit up for the night or even a passing cruise ship. Without a balcony cabin, you could miss all these experiences.

A Good Night’s Sleep

For us, falling asleep on a cruise ship is quite easy. With jam-packed days of sightseeing and onboard activities, we usually return to our stateroom exhausted. The gentle rocking of the ship further helps us relax as our heads hit the pillows for the evening.

The soothing sounds of the ocean waves and fresh air creeping in from your balcony door all add to the ambiance. With a balcony stateroom, you have the ability enjoy these outdoor benefits while you sleep.

While the cruise lines do recommend against it, keeping your balcony door partially open while you sleep is a benefit you cannot get in an inside cabin. Even those with an ocean view will not be able to enjoy the fresh air and ocean soundtrack as the porthole windows cannot be opened.

Celebrity Edge Infinite Veranda review

Do keep in mind that if you leave the door open, this will most likely shut off your in-room temperature control. Most cruise ships have a setting that turns off in-room cooling and heating systems if a balcony door is open. So, if you want to have the a/c on while you sleep, or need some extra heat, don’t leave the door open.

Al Fresco Dining

There is nothing like sipping your morning coffee as you cruise past scenic vistas or pull into your next exciting port of call. It is also quite romantic to enjoy a private, outdoor dinner at sunset with just you and your significant other.

With a balcony stateroom, you can partake in your own private outdoor dining experience any time of day. This is one reason why a balcony cabin is worth it on a cruise.

Now, the easiest (and least expensive) way to enjoy al fresco dining is to grab food from a complimentary restaurant and bring it back to your room. Grabbing some items from the buffet before the sun rises means you are able to enjoy an Instagram-worthy breakfast from your balcony.

Of course, you can also grab some burritos or pizza and a couple of drinks for an outdoor lunch on your balcony without the crowds.

The same goes for dinner. The main dining room may or may not allow you to order menu items “to-go” though. While almost all cruise lines do offer food delivery to your stateroom, room service costs extra on most mainstream lines. It is often a minimal charge, so it might be worth it to you. Some cruise lines even offer special balcony dining experiences with upgraded menus that are available for purchase.

The Fresh Air

Let’s face it, the 2020 global health crisis changed cruising for years to come. While many of the temporary changes have now been eliminated, it did make people more mindful of the air around them and how important it is to have clean, fresh air whenever possible. During that time, many existing cruise ships were renovated to bring only fresh air from outside into cabins. Previously, it was usually a mix of both recycled indoor air as well as air from outside. New ships are being built to intake only fresh outdoor air that circulate through cabins and public interior spaces.

Even still, air is freshest when it’s coming straight through your door into your room. Plus, having a balcony means you’re just a step away from feeling a fresh ocean breeze whenever you want when you’re in your cabin.

Alleviate Seasickness

If you’re prone to seasickness, there are many tips and tricks to helping minimize and alleviate it during a cruise. One of them is to book a cabin towards the middle of the ship on a lower deck, because that area moves less than the higher spots towards the front and back of the ship. But if you’re really looking for some natural sunlight and fresh air, a balcony cabin towards the middle of the ship is a great option as well. (The caveat being that balcony cabins are a bit higher up.)

One thing that can help relieve motion sickness is by looking beyond your immediate surroundings to a fixed point — for cruisers this would be the horizon. This can be achieved much more easily and comfortably by doing so from the privacy of your own cabin. Plus you can lay on your bed while looking outside — which is probably all you want to do when the seasickness hits anyway.

The Perks

When you book a cruise balcony cabin, you could receive some additional benefits from the cruise line or your travel agent. Often, cruise lines run special promotions for booking this stateroom category (or higher). Some of the added perks could include free gratuities, onboard credit, WiFi packages, free beverage packages, or specialty dining plans.

These promotions are not guaranteed and can vary based on the cruise line and itinerary.

Still, we try to take advantage of special deals and bonuses when purchasing a qualifying cabin. Perhaps the best part of these promotions is that you can often combine the offerings with travel agent perks or loyalty discounts. Often times, booking a balcony cabin to score these additional perks ends up costing less money than booking a cheaper room and paying for these other items out of pocket.

Viking River Cruise Veranda Stateroom review

Once you have been cruising for a while, you will earn status in the cruise line’s loyalty program. After a certain number of trips, you might qualify for special discounts and promotions. For instance, Royal Caribbean offers Diamond members balcony discounts. These savings are on top of any current rates and promotions from the cruise line.

We have used these discounts and coupled them with travel agent bonuses to get some really amazing deals on several cruises. So, upgrading to a balcony cabin can sometimes pay for itself!

Nassau, Bahamas is one of the most popular cruise ports of call for all major cruise lines. Nassau offers travelers a variety of different attractions and popular sights to explore during their time ashore. To help you narrow down your choices, below are our Best Things to Do in Nassau, Bahamas on a Cruise.

The capital of the Bahamas, Nassau is the largest city among the 30 inhabited islands of the country. About 70 percent of all residents of the Bahamas live in Nassau, making it the country’s economic center. Once a colony of Great Britain, the Bahamas gained full independence in 1973. However, plenty of English influences can still be found in the culture, architecture, and everyday life.

Best Things to Do in Nassau, Bahamas on a Cruise

Spend the Day at Atlantis Resort

Located on Paradise Island, the Atlantis Bahamas Resort is a world-famous casino and resort that offers visitors a variety of attractions. You will need to purchase either an excursion through the cruise company or tickets at Atlantis as access to most spots and activities are restricted. Staff are situated throughout the resort to ensure only paying guests are permitted in the designated areas.

Best Things to Do in Nassau, Bahamas on a Cruise

The most popular attraction is the Aquaventure Water Park. Most excursions to the water park run about six to eight hours, providing you with time to see the surrounding grounds as well.

If water parks aren’t your thing, many cruise lines also offer excursions that include self-guided tours of the grounds. These tours give travelers access to explore the hotel and other sites like “The Dig” and Shark Encounters, as well as access to the lagoon and beaches at the resort.

If you are reluctant to book an excursion through the cruise line due to the hefty price tag, you might want to consider booking a room for the day at the Comfort Suites. Located within walking distance to Atlantis, rooms at this hotel include complimentary entrance to all the Atlantis facilities for up to four guests, and the cost to book a room is often cheaper than paying for the cruise-sponsored excursion for even just two adults. Of course, you will have to weigh the risk of potential itinerary changes with the hotel’s cancellation policies.

Take a Trip to Blue Lagoon

Located a 40-minute boat ride away from Nassau is Blue Lagoon Island. This private island resort offers visitors an escape from the hustle and bustle of the city. Even though it is only a short trip away, this Nassau shore excursion will have you feeling like you have been transported to your own secluded paradise.

Best Things to Do in Nassau Bahamas - Blue Lagoon

Day-long beach passes include access to facilities, a grilled buffet lunch, an inflatable waterpark, and WiFi; additional non-motorized equipment can be rented while on the island as well.

Blue Lagoon also offers a variety of different marine experiences. If you want to get up close and personal with some marine life in their natural habitat, you can book a dolphin encounter, a sea lion encounter, stingray encounter, and even a shark encounter. Make sure to reserve these experiences early as space is limited for these one-of-a-kind encounters.

Relax at Pearl Island

You can also spend the day relaxing at Pearl Island, which is the closest private island to Nassau. A short ferry ride will transport you to this secluded tropical location. Pearl Island is home to two beaches, plentiful loungers, and amazing panoramic views from the top of its lighthouse.

You ticket to paradise also includes a traditional Bahamian lunch and use of non-motorized equipment. If you want to upgrade your experience, you can book a package that includes a guided snorkeling adventure. There are also private oceanview cabanas available, which come with a personal server for the day.

If you want to interact with the famed swimming pigs, there’s also a package that allows for that activity plus the inclusions in the standard beach package.

A trip to any of these private locations is definitely a recipe for a day of fun in the sun! Which will you choose?

Book an Island Tour

Soak up some of the British influence and history while exploring the city’s more memorable highlights during an organized tour of Nassau, Bahamas. Depending on whether you book through the cruise line or arrange a private tour directly with a local tour operator or third-party provider, your island tour could include a variety of stops.

Most tours will stop at Fort Fincastle and the Queen’s Staircase. Built out of coral rock, these 66 stairs were constructed using hammers and chisels during the late 18th century. Other popular forts include the largest fort, Fort Charlotte and the oldest fort, Fort Montagu. These forts and the Queen’s Staircase are among the free things to do in Nassau as well, if you’re exploring the port on your own and want to see some historical sites.

Best Things to Do in Nassau Bahamas on a Cruise

Most arranged Nassau cruise excursion tours pass other popular public buildings such as the Parliament Building and the Government House, with a statue of Christopher Columbus adorning the entrance. Some tours do stop at Atlantis for a brief time — mostly for photo ops — as you need to purchase a pass to visit most attractions.

Of course, a visit to the Bahamas wouldn’t be complete without visiting the Bahamas Rum Cake Factory, the John Watling’s Distillery, or the Straw Market.

Experience History at the Nassau Cruise Port

Visitors to Nassau, Bahamas can also create their own customized island tour by visiting other island attractions like Graycliff Restaurant, Hotel, and Chocolate Factory.

Graycliff is a historic hotel said to be built in 1740 by a famous pirate. Today, the building still serves as a hotel welcoming guests to the Bahamas. If you are just visiting Nassau for the day, Graycliff offers some unique experiences. You can escape to this 5-star hotel for the day to enjoy use of its pool and a delicious three-course lunch. You can even take a cooking class with the hotel’s executive chef, along with a tour of the wine cellar.

Additionally, visitors can tour the Graycliff Cigar Company, book a cigar rolling lesson, or watch a cigar rolling demonstration alongside a rum tasting.

If that’s not enough, there’s the Graycliff Chocolatier. Here, guests can take a factory tour, learn how to make their own chocolates, or partake in the Chocolates and Spirits pairing.

Best Beaches in Nassau

With so many beautiful beaches, a beach break is definitely one of the best things to do in Nassau, Bahamas on a cruise.

Junkanoo Beach

A cruiser favorite, Junkanoo Beach is within walking distance (15 minutes) from the cruise ship. Here, locals and travelers alike can enjoy the water at this free beach. This spot is popular, so get there early to stake your claim. Be sure to take advantage of the amenities available including food, beverages, and equipment rentals. The Tiki Hut is a popular spot for food and drinks.

Cabbage Beach

A short cab ride from the port, Cabbage Beach on Paradise Island offers another free beach with plenty of white sand, picture worthy vistas of palm trees, and over a mile of coastline. While it is known for its soft sand and azure waters, the current can be strong so it may not be the best choice for families.

Be sure to bring cash (and your towel) if you want to rent beach chairs and umbrellas. The one downfall of this beach is that there are no public facilities. So, if you plan to spend the day, you might need to purchase a resort pass from nearby hotels such as Atlantis.

Cable Beach

Considered one of the best beaches in the Bahamas, Cable Beach is a stretch of about four miles of mostly private beaches. Though, there are a couple of public spots. This beach is also located a short cab ride away from the cruise terminal.

If you are okay spending a few bucks on your beach break, getting exclusive access is well worth the cost. Breezes Resort is one such hotel on Cable Beach that offer beach access. These resort for a day passes typically provide an “all-inclusive” experience. Again, if you do not pay for a pass to a resort, facilities will be limited.

Best Beaches in Nasau

Jaws Beach

Jaws Beach is another popular beach in Nassau mostly because it is recognized from movies such as Jaws and James Bond films. Though, it is located the furthest from the cruise port. This beach is a favorite for those who like to snorkel and scuba. It is located within the Clifton Heritage Park which is worth exploring as well (and has a restroom). This beach is rather secluded so don’t expect to find vendors here.

Love Beach

Love Beach is another more secluded beach option in Nassau, located between Cable Beach and Jaws Beach. This beach is free to access, and you are able to rent chairs and umbrellas from the bar onsite. The Nirvana Beach Bar also has restrooms and serves food and drinks. The water here is rather calm, so this beach is a good swimming choice for families. It is also a good location for snorkeling.

Day Pass to the British Colonial Hilton

Closer to the cruise pier, a popular spot to score a day pass for full access to resort facilities is the British Colonial Hilton. Located just a short 10-minute walk from the cruise pier in downtown Nassau, you will have access to a private beach, pool, lounge chairs and umbrellas, and non-motorized watersports at this resort. In addition, day pass guests receive 10 percent off food and beverages.

Explore Ardastra Gardens and Zoo

Looking for a wild time when visiting Nassau, Bahamas? We suggest taking a short 12-minute drive from the cruise port to Ardastra Gardens, Zoo, and Conservatory. What was started in the 1950’s as a garden and attempt to increase the flamingo population has grown into a full blown zoo and conservatory with over 200 animals. Hence, it is definitely one of the best things to do in Nassau, Bahamas on a cruise!

Yes, the now world-famous flamingos are still here. You can watch their daily shows while visiting the conservatory and get some great photos interacting with these majestic birds. Also, don’t miss the chance to feed and groom a tortoise, an experience that takes place daily at 11:30 am.

Best things to do in Nassau on a cruise

There are plenty of other great photo ops here too, from Australian Black Swans, Lemurs, and Iguanas to the threatened species, the Bahamian BOA Constrictor. While here, don’t forget to enjoy the gardens too which showcase native regional plants and flowers. Here are some of our favorite reasons to visit Ardastra Gardens.

Given the zoo’s location, you can easily visit other city highlights on your walk back to the cruise ship. Maybe a visit to the National Art Gallery or the Fish Fry (Arawak Cay) are in order?

Swim with the Pigs

The popular swimming with the pigs shore excursion in Nassau is now offered by many cruise lines. There are a few different locations where you can partake in this instagram-worthy excursion. Regardless of the location though, you will get the chance to feed, swim, and interact with these famous creatures. Your tour will also include a ride through Nassau harbor to this attraction, often providing narration of city highlights along the way.

Best Things to Do in Nassau on a Cruise

Rose Island is located only 25 minutes from Nassau, and is home to a wildlife sanctuary including the beloved pigs. This island is much closer than the popular spot in Exuma (Pig Beach) making it a perfect cruise excursion.

Taste the Local Flavor on a Tru Bahamian Food Tour

If you are a foodie who is looking for something a bit different during your visit to Nassau, we suggest booking a Tru Bahamian Food Tour. The popular Bites of Nassau Food & Cultural Tour is a three-hour Nassau shore excursion that runs multiple times daily.

This small group experience is a walking tour that visits six different tasting locations. Each location highlights unique Bahamian dishes, including conch, rum cake, and cocktails of course. During the tour, you will get to meet local chefs and small business owners, as well as hear a bit about the history and culture of the Bahamas.

Cozumel, an island just off the coast of the Yucatan peninsula of Mexico, is one of the most popular Caribbean cruise destinations. Offering plenty of daytime activities and nighttime fun, Cozumel has no shortage of things to do. Whether you are a beach goer, a history lover, or an adventure seeker, you will want to read our list of the best things to do in Cozumel on a cruise.

Best Things to Do in Cozumel on a Cruise

Best Things to Do in Cozumel on a Cruise

Explore the Ancient Ruins

San Gervasio

With a rich Mayan history and culture, Cozumel and the nearby mainland of Mexico offer some of the best archaeological sites. San Gervasio is the largest Mayan site in Cozumel, though small compared to the sites on the mainland. San Gervasio was a religious site of worship for the god of fertility, Ix Chel. Every Mayan woman was expected to make the journey here at least once in her lifetime to make an offering. Today, several temples still stand that you can explore to gain some insight into the history and culture of this ancient civilization, including the Las Manitas structure with its mysterious four-fingered handprints.

Chichen Itza

If you want to explore some of the larger Mayan ruin sites, then you will have to venture to the mainland. Chichen Itza is a six square mile UNESCO world heritage site and a natural wonder of the world. It is home to several well-preserved structures that you can explore like the iconic Temple of Kulkulcan. During the tour, you will learn about Chichen Itza’s importance as a religious, ceremonial, and astronomical center in the Mayan culture.

Of note, there is extensive travel time involved from Cozumel, including a 45 minute ferry ride to the mainland followed by a 2+ hour bus ride to the site. Therefore, it is recommended that you only book this excursion through your cruise company. If you are willing to spend more cash, some companies offer transportation via a much shorter 50-minute airplane ride.

Best Things to Do in Cozumel on a Cruise

Tulum and Coba

Tulum and Coba, though not as famous as Chichen Itza, are also great options that are a bit closer to Cozumel. However, they still require a 45 minute ferry ride and an hour or more of drive time. As the only Mayan city built on a coast, Tulum offers amazing views and its own beach. The most prominent remaining structure at Tulum is the Castillo which is perched on a limestone cliff. Coba, located 30-45 minutes inland from Tulum, is not nearly as excavated or reconstructed. It is most famous for Nohuch Mul, the tallest pyramid on the Yucatan peninsula. Those daring enough may climb the steps to the top for panoramic vistas. The jury is still out on which site cruisers prefer, so you will have to decide for yourself.

Best Things to Do in Cozumel on a Cruise

Get Back to Nature

Chankanaab National Park

Located in Cozumel’s National Marine Park, Chankanaab is the perfect Cozumel shore excursion for groups of all ages. This park is located a short taxi ride from the cruise pier in Cozumel and offers plenty of activities in one location. You can choose to relax on the gorgeous beach, take a dip in the pool, or enjoy some one-of-a-kind snorkeling.

At Chankanaab, you also have several opportunities to explore the flora and fauna. You can enjoy the nature trail and botanical gardens, take in a sea lion show, visit the crocodile exhibit, or marvel at the fish in the saltwater lagoon. If that’s not enough, you can explore Mayan replicas, partake in a tequila tasting, or dine on Mexican cuisine in one of the onsite restaurants. While many activities are included in the standard admission price, additional experiences can be purchased as well. These include ziplines, Dolphin Discovery, glass bottom kayak rentals, and more.

Best Things to Do in Cozumel on a Cruise

Punta Sur Eco Park

Punta Sur is the largest ecological reserve in Cozumel. It is located a bit further from the cruise port but offers more great opportunities to explore nature. Punta Sur is another great snorkeling location (although you do have to swim a bit further out). It is also home to the most beautiful beach with hammocks in the shade. This area is the perfect spot for birdwatching and observing crocodiles in their natural habitat and the sea turtle nesting area. While at Punta Sur, be sure to also explore the El Caracol Mayan ruins, the Faro Celarain lighthouse, and the Navigation Museum. The Faro Celarain lighthouse offers the best view of island!

Marine Encounter

Like many of the Caribbean islands, Cozumel offers plenty of family friendly marine encounters. While some of these excursions can be a bit pricey, most cruise lines offer some type of swim with the dolphins experience. During your encounter, you will be able to interact with these creatures for one of a kind photo ops like a fin shake, a kiss, and a belly ride. While dolphin encounters are probably the most popular, you can also book experiences to interact with sea lions, manatees, stingrays, and even nurse sharks.

Fury Catamaran Snorkel

The Fury Catamaran snorkel tour is another popular adventure when visiting Cozumel on a cruise. This excursion includes a scenic sail onboard a luxury catamaran as well as a leisurely snorkel opportunity and beach break. During your snorkeling fun, you can explore the crystal clear waters in search of coral formations and tropical sea life. At your private beach paradise, you will have time to relax or partake in some of the other water-based activities available. These activities include an inflatable aquapark, kayaks, paddleboards, and more. The best part is that the catamaran ride includes an open bar so you can enjoy all the margaritas or beers you want!

Food and Drink Experiences

Mexican Cooking Classes

At Playa Mia Grand Beach Park, you can learn about authentic Mexican cuisine and culinary traditions from a local chef, while you get a hands on experience preparing your own three course meal with locally-sourced ingredients. Of course, you will then get to enjoy this meal along with a cocktail. There’s also the popular Salsa & Salsa excursion. With this tour, you will learn how to make a variety of Mexican salsas and even some tasty margaritas. Once you have loosened up, it’s time for the other kind of salsa — dancing!

Best Things to Do in Cozumel

Cozumel Bar Hop

If you want to skip the cuisine and head straight for the drinks, maybe a Cozumel bar hop is more your style. Let the original Cozumel Bar Hop be your designated driver as you explore the island for the day in an air-conditioned bus. This tour visits four beach bars with an included welcome shot at each one and your very own bar hop t-shirt. At every stop, you also have the opportunity to purchase additional food or drinks. So, if you are up for some fun and want to escape the tourist area of Cozumel, grab your friends and book this tour.

Go Shopping

Pick Up Souvenirs and Local Goods

Shopping is easy to do from the cruise ship in Cozumel, especially seeing as there are open-air shopping centers strategically located near the island’s three cruise piers. Visitors looking for classic souvenirs like magnets, ornaments, and t-shirts will easily find lots to choose from. There’s also plenty of other goods within easy walking distance of the piers including blankets, wall artwork, knick-knacks, jewelry, vanilla, and Mexican-made goods like pottery, leather items, and hammocks. Most stores accept both U.S. dollars and pesos, but you may pay a lower price if you pay in pesos. Credit cards are also widely accepted — especially Visas and Mastercards.

A Day at the Beach

Paradise Beach

Paradise Beach is located about five miles from the cruise pier in Cozumel. This beach now offers an all-inclusive option. However, if you prefer to pay a la carte, you can still gain entrance for $10 per person with a $10 minimum food and drink purchase for use of the facilities for the day. There is WiFi available, full food and beverage service, water equipment available for rental, and a Fun Pass to utilize the water toys for $18.

Nachi Cocom

Another cruise favorite is Nachi Cocom, offering a more exclusive feel for only 130 guests. At this all-inclusive beach club, you have access to the ocean, a pool with swim up bar, plenty of food and drinks, hammocks, WiFi, and more. For a price of $69 and a short 15 minute taxi ride from the cruise pier, Nachi Cocom is the perfect way to spend a day in Cozumel. For an additional cost, there are also a limited number of other activities including massages, banana boat rides, and snorkeling.

Best Things to Do in Cozumel

Mr. Sancho’s Beach Club

Mr. Sancho’s Beach Club is also located only a short distance from the cruise pier. This club offers an all-inclusive beach pass for $68. For this price, you can enjoy free WiFi, all you can eat and drink from the buffet or menu, two pool bars, access to the beautiful beach, and kayaks. For an additional cost, you can also enjoy the aqua park, wave runners, parasailing, horseback riding, ATV tours, and more. Mr. Sancho’s certainly offers fun in the sun for the entire family.

Isla Pasion

Isla Pasion, a private island paradise located just north of Cozumel, offers another all-inclusive experience for Cozumel cruise port visitors. The resort features a beautiful beach, a Mexican buffet, open bar, hammocks, water sports, and more. There are several excursions offered to Isla Pasion including a catamaran ride, a Jeep ride through the jungle, a kayak through the mangroves, and a twister jet boat ride. Whatever your mode of transportation, you are sure to love this escape.

Playa Palancar

If you are looking for something a little more low-key and authentic than an all-you-can-eat-and-drink experience, then head to Playa Palancar. This beach has free access and is a bit less touristy. With plenty of sand and sun, you can spend the day relaxing or possibly partake in a watersport activity. Boat trips for snorkeling at the off-shore Palancar Reef and kayaks are available for hire. There is also food and beverages for purchase.

Playa Mia Grand Beach Park

Playa Mia is another beach and water park Cozumel shore excursion option. With several different activities, Play Mia is great for families of all ages. For about $42 USD, you will have access to several complimentary activities including waterslides, a floating park, kayaks, paddleboats, volleyball and soccer courts, and more. Several different passes are available, including one that includes access to the buffet and open bar. For an additional fee, parasailing, wave runners, and other shore excursions are also offered.

Get Adventurous

Jade Caverns

If you are looking for a little adventure while in Cozumel, Mexico, then you should take an ATV or X-Rail vehicle to the Jade Caverns. Get ready for a bumpy and dirty ride through the jungle on your way to Cozumel’s largest cenote. Here, you can admire the cave formations, discover the rare plant species, learn about the Mayan culture, and take a dip in the freshwater cenote, of course.

Best Things to Do in Cozumel

Secret River

If you want to explore more of the natural formations in Mexico, you can take an Amazing Secret River tour. This tour will guide you deep into an underground cave where you will hike and swim your way through the Rio Secreto while admiring its beauty and history. It is recommended that you book this excursion through your cruise line due to transportation to the mainland. Also, be aware that you will be required to wear a wetsuit.

Xplor Adventure Park

If you thirst for adventure is still not quenched, try visiting the Xplor Adventure Park. At Xplor, you have access to ziplining, amphibious vehicles, cave rafting, and swimming. When you are finished thrill-seeking for the day, you can enjoy a buffet lunch. Again, this park is located on the mainland of Mexico, so it is best to book the excursion through the cruise company to avoid missing the ship! Similar experiences can also be found at Xcaret Eco Park or Xel-Ha Paradise.

Horseback Ride

If you’d prefer something a bit more relaxed, then you should explore the Mayan Frontier on a one-of-a-kind horseback adventure. Set off on a journey through the jungle to view the flora and fauna, see original caves dating back 1,500 years, and learn a bit of Mayan history. No experience is necessary for this tour. You will be given all the instructions you need to ride and will be paired with a horse to meet your level of skill.

PortMiami, known as the “cruise capital” of the world, is recognized as the busiest cruise port. In fiscal year 2023, the Miami cruise port processed over 7.2 million passengers. The Miami cruise port is home to some of the newest and most innovative ships afloat. If you are planning a cruise from this popular homeport, we outline the best ways to get from the Fort Lauderdale airport to the Miami cruise port.

Best Ways to Get from the Fort Lauderdale Airport to the Miami Cruise Port

Given Miami’s ideal location, this cruise port offers an array of cruise itineraries. Cruisers will find routes to the Caribbean, Mexico, and South America, as well as Panama Canal transits, transatlantic cruises, and more departing from Miami, Florida. Cruisers will also find a variety of ships from most major cruise brands — as well as many smaller luxury lines — sailing from this homeport.

Best Ways to Get From the Fort Lauderdale Airport to the Miami Cruise Port

While many Florida locals do drive to the port, most cruisers fly here to embark on their cruise vacations.

The closest airport is the Miami International Airport (MIA). This airport is located less than 10 miles from PortMiami. All large U.S. airlines do fly to Miami, however carriers such as JetBlue, Southwest, Spirit, and Allegiant airlines also have major operations in Fort Lauderdale.

Luckily, the Fort Lauderdale-Hollywood International Airport (FLL) is also located under 30 miles away. With traffic, this trip should take between 45 minutes and an hour.

Despite the distance, several options do exist to ensure you arrive to the ship on time for your cruise. If you are not sure which mode of transportation is best for your next vacation, we’re comparing all of the best ways to get from the Fort Lauderdale Airport to the Miami Cruise Port.

Given the distance from the airport to the cruise terminal, be sure to plan your flights appropriately if you plan to fly in the day of your cruise. Though, we always recommend cruisers fly the day before to avoid any potential travel delays. We suggest considering a pre-cruise hotel stay prior your cruise. If you are flying into the Fort Lauderdale airport, we would recommend securing a hotel in Miami so you are closer to the cruise port in the morning.

Cruise Line Transfers

If you are arriving the day of your cruise, a cruise line transfer from the airport might be the easiest option. Many cruise lines offer an option to book this transportation pre-cruise. Once at the airport, a cruise line representative will check you in and direct you to the next bus departing for your ship.

Best Ways to Get From the Fort Lauderdale Airport to the Miami Cruise Port

These transfers can run upwards of $40 per person depending on the cruise line. Further, the buses run on set schedules, so depending on your flight time, you might need to wait a little while for the next departure time.

While not the cheapest option, the pro of booking a cruise line transfer is that you are guaranteed you will not miss the ship.

Independent Shuttle Services

There are also several independent shuttle options. These services can sometimes be the cheapest per person option, especially for larger parties — expect to pay anywhere between $15 and $40 per person.

These shuttle options may include shuttles from the airport to the cruise terminal and/or hotel shuttles (if arriving a day early). Some of these options include GO Airport shuttle, Quick Shuttle, Express Shuttle Miami, Fort Lauderdale Airport Shuttle, and South Florida Shuttles.

Most of these shuttle services offer smaller vehicles rather than a large bus, and they are located right at the airport and cruise terminal for arrivals and departures. Still, they are a shared service and also run on a set schedule. Though, some companies do offer private transfers as well.

Best Ways to Get From the Fort Lauderdale Airport to the Miami Cruise Port

If you have issues with a reservation or a problem getting to the port, you will have to deal directly with the shuttle service. This is especially true if you arrive late and are worried about getting to the ship on time.

Private Cars

If sharing is not your idea of being on vacation, we understand. There are several reputable companies from which you can reserve a private vehicle that will pick you up at the airport.

The drivers will assist with your bags and make sure you are comfortable during your trip from the Fort Lauderdale airport to the Miami cruise port.

While this is the most expensive transportation option, this will be a private accommodation and a more upscale vehicle.

When reserving one of these private services, be sure to get a price quote that includes all tolls, airport fees and charges, and gratuities. Some companies will quote a very low price but then tack on all of these additional costs once you arrive.

Shared Ride Services

Shared Ride Services are probably the most popular form of transportation in recent years. This is always our preferred transportation method when on vacation.

Popular apps like Uber and Lyft are allowed to pick-up/drop-off passengers at both the airport and the cruise port. The cost of using these services varies based on the type of vehicle you choose but the average for an UberX is around $50-$60 from Fort Lauderdale to the Miami cruise port. This price is for the entire car — not per person.

Best Ways to Get from Orlando Airport to Port Canaveral - Best Ways to Get From the Fort Lauderdale Airport to the Miami Cruise Port

An UberX should have enough room for two people and all your luggage; however, a family of four and all your luggage will probably need a larger vehicle (UberXL).

Of course, the larger vehicle will come with a higher price tag.

The biggest benefit to using these ride share services is convenience. You will meet your private car at a designated location at the airport, and it will drop you off right in front of the cruise terminal.

However, the one issue with this mode of transportation can be quality control. We have had some great and some not so great Uber drivers. Depending on the driver, you might have to load your own luggage into the vehicle. We have also experienced some language barriers.

Similarly, taxis are available from Fort Lauderdale for around $80 to $100 each way. If for some reason you aren’t able to find a rideshare driver using the app, a taxi is always a good backup.

Public Transportation

If you are up to taking public transportation, it could save you quite a bit of money. You can get from the Fort Lauderdale airport to the Miami cruise port using a combination of the Tri-Rail, the Metrorail, and the Miami Trolley which in total will cost under $10 per person. Though, this will certainly not be the most convenient or efficient. This entire trip could end up taking you upwards of an hour and a half. The multiple transfers is not ideal, so we only recommend this option if you need to save money on your trip or you are very comfortable with public transportation.

A better option if you’re leaning towards a train is Brightline, which has stations in downtown Fort Lauderdale as well as in downtown Miami. The Brightline ride to Miami takes around 40 minutes and — in our experience — is one of the nicest, cleanest public transportation options available.

There are two types of Brightline fares available. The standard one, called the Smart fare, usually costs between $19 and $40 per person, one way from Fort Lauderdale to Miami and includes perks such as high-speed wifi and outlets at every seat. The Premium option usually costs between $44 and $80 for the same route and includes extras such as larger seats, snacks and drinks, access to the Premium lounge at the train station, and a $10 Uber voucher.

Just keep in mind that if you’re taking Brightline, you’ll still need to take an Uber/Lyft or use another method of transportation to get to/from the train station and the airport/cruise port.

Renting a Car

Technically, you can also rent a car and drive to Miami. When you factor in gas and cost for the car, it might work out to be cheaper than some of the other options, especially for a family of four. However, you will then have to deal with traffic and other associated parking fees.

Port Canaveral Cruise Port - Best Ways to Get From the Fort Lauderdale Airport to the Miami Cruise Port

Even if you are planning to spend a few days in Miami before your cruise, we don’t recommend renting a car. Much of the area near the cruise port is walkable.

There is also plenty of public transportation options once in the city, along with Uber/Lyft. Further, if you are looking to go sightseeing, a hop-on/hop-off bus might be the perfect choice. Big Bus Miami has stops located near all the major Miami attractions.

Choosing the Right Mode of Transportation to the Cruise Port

Deciding which form of transportation to take from the Fort Lauderdale airport to the Miami cruise port depends on the preferences of your travel party.

Couples or those who don’t want to be bound to a schedule will probably find a shared ride service to be the best option. Small groups or those looking to save some money will probably opt for a shared transfer from a third-party company.

Those travelers looking for sheer convenience or first-time cruisers might be best just sticking with the cruise line’s offered transportation; whereas, travelers looking for luxury might be best served with a private car. If you are traveling with a larger party, you might want to reserve a private shuttle.

Either way, knowing your options can help you can make an informed decision for your next cruise from PortMiami.

If you’re booking a cruise to Alaska, there are so many exciting things to consider. Among them, which ports to visit, whether to spend a week or more, and what time of year might be best to see wildlife. But in addition to all the port adventures on an Alaska cruise is the epic scenic sailing. The crown jewel of these scenic sailing days is almost always the dazzling glaciers. But how do you choose an itinerary with Hubbard Glacier vs. Glacier Bay?

Nearly every Alaska voyage includes some form of scenic sailing, usually occupying an entire day in the middle of the itinerary. Alaskan scenery includes moody mist over the tops of tall trees and mountains, little islands dotted with greenery, and of course the chance to spot bald eagles, sea lions, or whales. But it’s the monumental walls of glacial blue ice that tend to leave a lasting impact on cruise passengers in the 49th State.

When Is the Best Time to Cruise to Alaska?

So, what is the best glacier to see in Alaska? Two of the most common scenic sailing sites are Hubbard Glacier vs. Glacier Bay National Park. Here, we’ll break down some common questions about these popular glaciers, including which itineraries to find them on and the pros and cons of each.

Hubbard Glacier vs. Glacier Bay: Which Alaska Cruise Itinerary is the Best?

Which cruise itineraries include Hubbard Glacier?

Most cruise lines offer Alaska itineraries that sail past magic-blue Hubbard Glacier. It’s a towering structure made of ice known as “galloping glacier” for its rare, rapid advancement and frequent calving (when pieces of the glacier break off and dramatically drop into the sea).

Select sailings — mainly one-way or longer voyages — visit Hubbard, named after Gardiner Hubbard, the founder and president of the National Geographic Society. Sample cruises include a weeklong Celebrity sailing roundtrip from Vancouver to Seattle; an eight-day Royal Caribbean cruise from Vancouver to Seward; and a 10-day Princess cruise roundtrip from Vancouver.

Small-ship cruise lines also visit Hubbard, such as Seabourn, on a seven-night sailing from Vancouver to Juneau. Smaller vessels are also able to visit other sites in the area like Misty Fjords National Monument.

Hubbard Glacier vs. Glacier Bay

Is Hubbard Glacier the biggest glacier?

Hubbard is the longest tidewater glacier in North America at 76 miles long and 400 feet tall, but it’s not the biggest glacier in Alaska. That title goes to the Bering Glacier, located about 6 miles from the Gulf of Alaska near Cordova, just south of Wrangell-St. Elias National Park. Combined with the Bagley Icefield, Bering is the largest glacier in North America spanning about 126 miles.

Is Hubbard Glacier in Glacier Bay?

No, the Hubbard Glacier is located in Disenchantment Bay within Wrangell-St. Elias National Park and Preserve in eastern Alaska. Parts of the glacier are also in Kluane National Park and Reserve in Canada’s Yukon territory.

Glacier Bay is the sixth-largest national park in the United States, located along the Gulf of Alaska. To its south is Wrangell-St. Elias, which is the largest national park in the country.

Pros and cons of Hubbard Glacier

Hubbard is an impressive glacier, and it won’t take an entire day to experience it. Cruise ships will spend a few hours sailing into Yukatat Bay and then Disenchantment Bay to view the glacier from all sides.

Pro: Hubbard is an active glacier, meaning viewers are likely to see — and hear — it calve. This action makes for a thrilling afternoon and some potentially awe-worthy photos and videos.

Con: Hubbard, while 6 miles wide and certainly stunning, is just one glacier. If the weather conditions aren’t right, you might not be able to see it at all.

Hubbard Glacier vs. Glacier Bay

How many glaciers can be seen from a cruise in Glacier Bay?

Glacier Bay National Park is a UNESCO World Heritage Site that spans 3.3-million acres along the Alaska’s Inside Passage. Glacier Bay (roughly the size of Connecticut) is a well-known destination for scenic sailing due to its staggering number of glaciers: more than 1,000.

From your cruise ship, expect to see just a handful of these glaciers during your day in the park. Common glaciers seen from ships in Glacier Bay include the Grand Pacific Glacier, Lamplugh Glacier, John Hopkins Glacier, and more. Margerie Glacier is often a highlight, at 21 miles long and with an ice face towering 200 feet about the waterline.

Which cruise itineraries call on Glacier Bay National Park?

Nearly every cruise line sailing Alaska will offer multiple visits to Glacier Bay during the season (typically May through September). Environmental regulations limit visits to just two large cruise ships per day. However, smaller cruise lines like Lindblad and UnCruise are considered tour operators, so their time in Glacier Bay is much more flexible.

Sample cruises to Glacier Bay include a weeklong cruise roundtrip from Seattle on Holland America; a 14-day roundtrip voyage from Sitka to Vancouver (with Haida Gwaii) on Lindblad National Geographic; and an eight-day cruise roundtrip from Juneau, spending two full days in Glacier Bay aboard UnCruise.

Notably, Royal Caribbean does not currently sail in Glacier Bay.

How Much Does an Alaska Cruise Cost

Pros and cons of Glacier Bay

If you’re looking for quality time spent enjoying Alaska’s unmatched landscapes from your ship, a visit to Glacier Bay will provide about 10 hours, on average, of scenic sailing.

Pro: Because it is a national park, a U.S. park ranger will board your cruise ship to join you for your full day of scenic sailing. This is an amazing opportunity — especially for kids — to ask questions and interact with the rangers, who typically broadcast guided commentary across the ship.

Con: Glacier Bay is listed as a port, so many people assume they will be able to step foot there. However, no cruise ships are allowed to dock anywhere in Glacier Bay, meaning you can only view the park from your ship (so consider splurging on a balcony cabin).

Icy Strait Point is a privately owned and operated cruise port, located on Chichagof Island about 1.5 miles from Hoonah, Alaska. Visitors to ISP will be awed by its waterfront location along Port Frederick, where whale and other marine life sightings are common from the shoreline of its beach.

Icy Strait is a small but mighty destination. The port offers guests top-tier wildlife viewing, rich cultural presentations, and marquee attractions in stunning natural surroundings.

It will be infinitely more difficult choosing something to do than finding something to do here. Still, Icy Strait Point offers a piece of true Alaska to everyone who visits. This guide will outline why ISP is so special and what you can expect to do during your day in port on your Alaska cruise.

Best Things to Do in Icy Strait Point, Alaska on a Cruise

Best Things to Do in Icy Strait Point, Alaska on a Cruise

What is Icy Strait Point known for?

Icy Strait is 100 percent Native owned and operated, which makes it a standout among Alaskan ports. Located within the city limits of Hoonah, Alaska’s largest Native Tlingit village, Icy Strait Point has very strong ties to Native Alaskan culture. In fact, about 85 percent of the port employees are from Hoonah.

The Huna Totem Corporation oversees Icy Strait Point and all profits directly support the local community. The port is known best for its excellent whale-watching opportunities, a restored salmon cannery that now serves as a museum, and one of the world’s longest ZipRider zip lines. Additionally, Icy Strait Point boasts a dozen retail shops that are all fully Alaskan-owned.

Where do cruise ships dock in Icy Strait Point?

There are two cruise ship docks —Wilderness Landing and Adventure Landing — as well as the ability to tender into port. Adventure Landing drops passengers right into the heart of the Adventure Center and close to the zip line. Wilderness Landing gives disembarking passengers a gorgeous view into the woods, to the west of Adventure Landing. It’s common to spot bald eagles here.

While various cruise lines call on Icy Strait, Norwegian Cruise Line has contributed a significant amount of money to the port’s development. Joint expansion, resulting in the newer Wilderness dock, means that NCL has priority docking rights there.

How do you get around Icy Strait Point?

Your cruise line might offer transportation from the dock into port for those with mobility issues. Otherwise, the port is very walkable. It hugs the coastline giving consistently breathtaking views as you go.

A shuttle bus into Hoonah runs from Icy Strait. The cost is about $5 for a roundtrip fare or $3 one way. The kiosk is located near the doughnut hut.

If you book an excursion for a hike or the ZipRider, transportation is included.

What to do in Icy Strait Point while visiting on a cruise?

Icy Strait Point Gondola

Introduced in 2022, the Sky Glider gondola is one of Icy Strait’s newest attractions. The electric gondola cars not only provide a thrilling ride through the surrounding rainforest, but also accomplishes an eco-friendly, vehicle-free zone across the port.

Soar among the treetops offering views to Glacier Bay with an all-day gondola pass (about $50). The green Transporter Gondola runs between Wilderness Landing and Adventure Landing; fare to this gondola is included when an excursion is booked. The red Mountain Top gondola will be used to replace buses as transport up the mountain for those booked on the ZipRider.

The Country’s Longest ZipRider

Even those a bit spooked about heights should still consider the epic ZipRider, one of the most popular things to do in Icy Strait. The views from the top include your cruise ship below, as you drop 1,330 feet in elevation over 5,330 feet of zip line.

Secured comfortably in a suspended seat, riders reach up to 60 mph and the entire ride is over in 90 seconds. There are six lines in total, so you and your family can descend to the ground below simultaneously.

Once a 45-minute tour through Hoonah, riders can now zip up the Mountain Top gondola for an additional thrill before strapping in to the ZipRider. A safety briefing and lockers are located at Adventure Landing before you depart. Even better — you can watch other ZipRiders land here from the base of the zip line.

Not so high up in the air is an adventure park and zip line course that operates from platforms in the rainforest. It’s a milder option for those not up to the elevation gain.

Whale Watching Tour

Icy Strait Point is so confident that you’ll see whales, they offer a $100 cash refund to any adult who doesn’t ($50 to kids). The magic comes from Point Adolphus, considered one of the best destinations for whale-watching in the world, and right around the corner from ISP.

Tons of humpback whales make this area their home during the summer, when ships call on Icy Strait. This guarantees some tremendous viewing opportunities. Alaska is always full of surprises, so you might also spot orcas, sea lions, porpoise, and of course tons of birds along the way.

Consider pairing your whale-watching cruise with a bear search or seafood feast. These all-day excursions are on offer from nearly every cruise line.

Tribal Dance and Cultural Legends Show

The Tlingit community of Hoonah brings their traditions to you during this hourlong live show. You can find the theater on the east side of the port, with totem poles marking the entrance.

Local performers combine music, dancing, and storytelling to convey their Tlingit history and customs, as well as the value of Icy Strait Point.

It’s a worthwhile way to break up an afternoon of exploration and activities.

Fishing

Part of what makes the area surrounding Icy Strait so rife with whales (and also bears) is its nutrient-rich waters. It makes sense then that a visit to Icy Strait also presents an opportune day of fishing.

Chase halibut, salmon, and more on a day out on the water. Halibut can be processed and shipped home to you, while stream fishing excursions participate in catch-and-release. A limited amount of fly-fishing gear is available for stream fishing.

You can charter an entire fishing boat and guide to yourself by purchasing all six tour tickets for your time slot. Kids can join in on the fun, but children must be 16 years old to participate unaccompanied.

In Alaska’s Wildest Kitchen

Learn how to prepare fresh Alaska seafood from the locals during a demonstration called “In Alaska’s Wildest Kitchen.” This hands-on 90-minute lesson is presented in a professional kitchen with personal anecdotes by Dodie Lunda, a fisherwoman and wilderness expert with a knack for fileting fish.

Guests will be able to season their own locally caught filets before bringing them out to an alder wood grill to cook. Paired with plenty of side dishes and fantastic storytelling, anyone age 8 and older can take part in this authentically Alaskan tour. Recipe cards are included. Foodies can’t miss out on one of the best things to do in Icy Strait Point, often sold as an excursion through your cruise line.

Lunch Along the Waterfront

Grabbing lunch in Icy Strait is not something that should be rushed. Choose any of the three waterfront venues for fresh seafood and brews: The Duck Point Smokehouse, the Cookhouse, or the Crab House.

Casual fare meets local flair with the hard-to-beat halibut fish and chips, crab tater tots, salmon dip, or Alaska Blue burgers made with reindeer meat. Wash it all down with Icy Strait Point’s own specialty ale, the Cannery Red.

Free things to do in Icy Strait Point

Tour of the Salmon Cannery

The Hoonah Packing Company built their first cannery here in 1912. While the cannery stopped producing canned salmon in 1953, it was retained as a maintenance and storage facility for the Hoonah fishing fleet into the ‘90s.

Today, the Salmon Cannery greets cruise ship guests as a renovated museum with a working assembly line, fascinating collections of old can labels, and tons of history about the area in the early 20th century.

Admission is free and it’s well worth spending some time inside, where shops selling Alaskan wares are also located.

Best Things to Do in Icy Strait Point, Alaska on a Cruise

Hike Along the Beach and Nature Trails

You don’t need to book a guided tour to simply walk along the beach here in Icy Strait. In addition to free beach access, there are a number of marked nature trails that are friendly for self-guided walks.

Grab a map and speak to a guest relations attendant at the Adventure Center to plan out the best hike for you based on the availability of time and endurance. Easy nature loops run alongside more strenuous hikes, ensuring that there is a satisfactory path for every ability.

Walk Around the Town of Hoonah

If you’ve been to Icy Strait before, consider getting to know the greater town of Hoonah. Anyone up for a walk on flat pavement can stroll about a half-hour into town from Icy Strait.

Grab a drink or a bite at the Fisherman’s Daughter, and possibly catch a Tlingit carver working in their outdoor studio. There are two totem poles in town; one near the Misty Bay Lodge and another by Colette’s Cupboard.

Take a Scenic City Tour

One of the best ways to see everything Victoria has to offer in a short amount of time is with a city tour. On the popular hop-on, hop-off buses, you can customize your tour by hopping on and off at your leisure. Among the notable 22 stops on the tour are Chinatown, Inner Harbor, Fisherman’s Wharf, Craigdarroch Castle, St. Andrews Cathedral, and more. If you’d prefer to take a stroll instead, many of these sights are also accessible by foot.

Many of Victoria’s major attractions are located on the picturesque Inner Harbor. The British Columbia Parliament buildings are among the most beautiful in the world, especially when lit up at night. The Royal British Columbia Museum is also located nearby if you want to explore the culture and natural history of the area. Thunderbird Park, part of the Royal BC Museum Foundation, is a tourists’ favorite with its impressive display of totem poles and native houses.

Chinatown, located just minutes from the Inner Harbor, is the oldest Chinatown settlement in Canada and a National Historic Site. Now, it is a great place to shop for exotic goods and dine on the best Chinese food in town. Be sure to check out Fan Tan Alley and the Gate of Harmonious Interest.

Fisherman’s Wharf, also right around the corner from the Inner Harbor, offers plenty of dining, shopping, and eco-tour options. Be sure to grab a bite of fresh seafood or perhaps have some shipped home. There are plenty of picture-worthy sites to enjoy as well, including the colorful houseboats.

Go Whale Watching

While in Victoria, you might want to consider a whale-watching tour. Victoria’s location on the tip of Vancouver Island makes it an ideal place for a whale watch. You will see a variety of orcas, humpback whales, and other marine wildlife. Most whale-watching excursions in the area are about three hours. Popular stops on these tours occur within the protected waters of Haro Strait and the Strait of Juan de Fuca.

There are a few different tour options available including a trip on a traditional whale-watching vessel. Or, thrill-seekers can opt for the “Zodiac Adventure”, a high-speed, raft-like vessel. There are also sunset tours available for those who might be arriving by cruise ship later in the day.

Regardless of which whale-watching tour you choose, you will have guided narration and plenty of wildlife sightings. Be sure to dress in layers and pack some binoculars as well as your camera.

Have Afternoon Tea

While visiting the Inner Harbor, you will find one of Conde Nast’s top 500 hotels of the world, The Fairmont Empress Hotel. Not only is the hotel another magnificent photo opportunity, but you can also partake in afternoon tea, a 100-year-old tradition at the hotel.

This luxury hotel, built in 1908 in the Edwardian style, has been graced by many celebrities over the years. (Be on the lookout for ghost sightings!) This now-historic hotel was almost torn down back in 1965. Instead, it underwent a multimillion-dollar renovation called “Operation Teacup”.

If the architectural beauty and history aren’t enough to make you want to visit this hotel, then maybe the exemplary afternoon tea tradition will. Sip on the original Empress Tea blend from dainty china while snacking on scones and other pastries and listening to live piano music. The Empress even has its own color-changing gin available for purchase, which turns shades of purple and blue thanks to the addition of the butterfly pea flower.

The dress code is casually elegant, and reservations are strongly required. Of course, there are also other high tea experiences in Victoria that can be purchased from your cruise line’s shore excursion department.

The Craigdarroch Castle was once the grand estate of industrialist Robert Dunsmuir and his family. This 1890’s mansion is a stunning example of Victorian Era architecture. Now a National Historic Site of Canada, the former home has been meticulously restored and is open daily for visitors. With its historical significance and amazing views of Victoria, a visit to Craigdarroch Castle makes our list of the best things to do in Victoria, BC.

Within this 25,000-square-foot residence, the wealth of the Dunsmuir family is certainly exemplified. Simply admire the furnishings, architecture, and stained glass across all 39 rooms. Take a self-guided tour to explore all the nooks and crannies and see the spectacular grand staircase. You can also climb the 87 steps to the tower for amazing vistas of the city.

Explore the Butchart Gardens

Perhaps one of the most popular attractions in Victoria is the Butchart Gardens. What started as Jennie Butchart’s attempt to beautify the limestone quarry left by her husband’s concrete business is now recognized as one of the top public gardens in the world. With 55 acres of unique and equally mesmerizing gardens, be sure your camera is fully charged. You are going to need it to capture the over 900 varieties of plants.

Top Things to Do in Victoria, BC

The original (and probably most photographed) garden is the Sunken Garden. You will be able to grab some amazing photos from the lookout point. In the early 1900’s, the Butchart’s expanded the gardens by adding the Japanese Garden, the Italian Garden, and the Rose Garden.

The Japanese Garden, complete with sharply manicured greenery and calming waterways, offers a tranquil vibe. The Italian Garden, originally the Butchart’s tennis court, is defined by its unique arches and ponds. The Rose Garden, located near the Concert Lawn, is a circular path in the middle of the gardens teeming with many rose varietals.

Top Things to Do in Victoria, British Columbia on a Cruise

In addition to the flora itself, there are many amazing fountains and a carousel on the grounds. There are even events like concerts and fireworks in the summer. Even though 90 minutes is the average time spent at the gardens, we would recommend more if you want to fully appreciate all that this attraction has to offer.

Note: Our cruise ship did not arrive until 6 pm during our September visit, so we felt like we were in a race against the setting sun. We would recommend a daytime tour of the Butchart Gardens, if your time in port allows.

When you head up north to Alaska, your cruise ship is sure to stop in the historic town of Skagway. Made famous by the 1898 Gold Rush, Skagway is now largely supported by tourism. Skagway might be a little town, but with its exciting history and beautiful scenery, it sure seems larger than life! If you are trying to decide what to do during your visit to this port of call, then you will want to check out our list of the best things to do in Skagway, Alaska on a cruise.

Ride the White Pass Rail

When in Skagway, you have to take a ride on the White Pass and Yukon Route Railroad, the number-one Alaskan cruise excursion. This narrow, gauge railway built in 1898 during the Klondike Gold Rush ascends nearly 3,000 feet along its 20-mile path from Skagway to the White Pass Summit. This historic train ride can be booked through most major cruise lines. Find it as a round-trip journey or as a one-way trip in combination with other activities such as the Klondike Gold Fields, a dog musher’s camp, or a salmon bake. We recommend a combo tour.

During your ride, you can relax in a vintage rail car as you retrace the path of the ambitious prospectors on the Trail of ’98 towards the Yukon Gold Fields. There is guided narration along the way (but it’s the same in both directions). (Hint: If you take the train up to the Summit, sit on the left side. If you take the train down from the Summit, sit on the right side as most major landmarks are on the same side.)

Be sure to have your camera ready to capture all the picturesque landscapes and historic landmarks along your journey. Among some of the sights you will see are a cantilevered steel bridge built in 1901; Dead Horse Gulch, a very dangerous portion of the trail where over 3,000 horses lost their footing and were trampled to death; Inspiration Point with a great view of the Chilkat Range; Bridal Veil Falls; and Rocky Point, which is a great photo opportunity of Skagway with the cruise ships in the background.

At the end of the one-way hike, you can relax with a raft float down the Taiya River.

Ketchikan, known as Alaska’s “first city”, is aptly named due to its location at the southernmost entrance of the Inside Passage. This makes Ketchikan a popular stop on most Alaska cruises.

Ketchikan has an average yearly rainfall of 10-13 feet, so odds are you will get a little wet during your visit. But don’t let the weather get in the way of your Alaskan adventure. There are many great things to do at this popular port of call. If you are taking a cruise to Alaska this year, then be sure to check out our top things to do in Ketchikan, Alaska on a cruise.

Top Things to Do in Ketchikan, Alaska on a Cruise

Soar over the Misty Fjords

Given the weather and location, it is no surprise that you will find beautiful landscapes including the Misty Fjords National Park, sometimes called “The Grand Canyon of the North”. This 2.3 million-acre National Forest is best viewed by seaplane. That is why a floatplane ride over the Misty Fjords ranks number one on our list of the best things to do in Ketchikan, Alaska on a cruise.

Soar high above this majestic area to capture a bird’s-eye view of the snow-capped mountains, blue-water lakes, glacial carvings, and flowing waterfalls. Everyone gets a window view in these intimate aircrafts. Complete narration of the history and geography is also provided during your aerial journey through the remote wilderness of Alaska. From the dramatic water take-off to the amazing panoramic aerial vistas — and actually landing in the fjords — this will be an experience that you will never forget.

If the thrill of a floatplane ride does not appeal to you, there are several boat tours in the area as well.

Marvel at the Totem Poles

If you are looking to keep your feet on solid ground, Ketchikan also offers a rich cultural history, including over 80 Native American totem poles. You can take a self-guided walking tour through the city to discover them all, including the replica of the Chief Johnson Memorial Totem pole. For history lovers, the Totem Heritage Center is also only a 15-minute walk from Downtown (or free shuttle), where you can view preserved totem poles that are over 150 years old.

Top Things to Do in Ketchikan, Alaska on a Cruise

If you don’t mind venturing a little beyond the city, you can see modern-day totem pole craftsmen at a few different attractions. Saxman Native Village is located about 3 miles from Downtown. You can reach this village via an organized shore excursion or public transportation. Here, you will get to explore one of the largest gatherings of totem poles in the world. Explore these intricate masterpieces while learning the stories and legends behind these works of art. Many excursions also include a Native dance show.

Top Things to do in Ketchikan Alaska on a Cruise

Potlatch Totem Park and Totem Bight State Park are other popular totem attractions, located next door to each other and about 10 miles outside of Ketchikan. Most major cruise lines offer excursions to these popular sites. While visiting, you will see authentic totem poles, tribal houses, and a carving center with demonstration. Be sure to stop at the gift shop before exiting to pick up your very own made-in-Alaska carving.

Go Bear Watching

Alaska has the highest concentration of black (and brown) bears, so it’s no wonder many cruise passengers seek out bear-viewing tours. Luckily, there are several opportunities to see bears in Alaska’s southeast cruise ports.

Most cruise lines offer several different bear-watching tours. They are usually either walking tours, boat cruises, or floatplane adventures. Each of these tours have their pros and cons. Oftentimes, these tours can also be combined with several other activities for longer excursions depending on your time in port.

Bear viewing in Ketchikan, Alaska on a Cruise

The three most common areas for bear watching in Ketchikan are Neets Bay, Herring Cove, and Traitors Cove/Margaret Creek. We have taken a Neets Bay Bear Cruise and a Black Bear, Wildlife, and Nature Walk tour (to the Alaska Rainforest Sanctuary at Herring Cove) during two separate visits to Ketchikan. Of the two excursions, we would recommend the walking tour as it allows for the potential for more up-close encounters.

Explore Creek Street

If you are up for a little risqué fun, make your way to Creek Street, the former red light district and main industry during the Gold Rush times, where “both men and salmon came upstream to spawn.” This historic boardwalk is now a popular spot for locally owned stores and restaurants and to watch the salmon spawn upstream during the summer months.

Top Things to Do in Ketchikan, Alaska on a Cruise

Be sure to also check out Dolly’s House. Dolly Arthur, one of the more famous madams, simply stated, “I realized I could make a lot more money from the attentions of men than I could waiting tables.” Dolly’s own personal red light district at 24 Creek Street prospered from the 1920s to the 1950s, and is now a landmark and museum. Today, you can relive the era during the daytime hours with a historic video and tour of the house. You can view all the antiques and old photographs within the home.

The best part of The Great Alaskan Lumberjack Show is that you can even meet the lumberjacks and take photos with them after the show. Who wouldn’t want to share this experience on social media?
